It's also not very far at all. Seriously, there's no comparison between his swing length and how long your swing goes on. His hands go up an extra, what, 3-4 inches?

Ya.. I know.. That's why I put up his shot and not mine.. The reason I revived a thread from 2009 is because I went searching for it; this is  because I know I am overswinging and I was just putting up an example of how someone can get to the top of the swing without overswinging like my self.. so, ya.. I wasn't comparing his and my swing :)

You? Your sequencing is off.

You've not hinged the club, you've not turned as much as you should, and then you continue your backswing

So to go back to your original paragraph (the last one I quoted):

1) Yes, your torso turn should be nearly complete by about A3.

2) Yes, your wrists should be hinged/cocked/whatever by about A3.

3) Yes, your arms (and torso) will continue on a little bit longer, but not very much.

I want to thank you for the quick look at my swing & for the tips.. I will work on those.. Maybe because I'm not hinged I just keep on swinging back?  I don't know.. Or it could be that I need that extra time coming down to be able to get the club face to a position where I won't hit that push (specially with a driver)..

What if your 3/4 swing IS a full swing, and what you do after that is doing nothing positive (and may even be doing negative) things?

Someone with reasonably good mechanics who just overswings could be just fine hitting what feel like 3/4 length backswings. Many people will actually do this and hit the ball farther than what they think is their "full swing" (but which is really an overswing).

Or let me put it this way: too many golfers think their full swing is as much as they can do, when really that's like a 1 1/4 swing, or a 5/3 swing. Their "3/4" swing is only a 3/4 swing on a scale that goes to 15 when it should stop at 10.

If that was the case with my 3/4 swing then I take back everything I said and I would do it.

The thing is with me though when I mentioned the advice, I have tried all of them and they haven't worked for me.. Maybe if the message was delivered in a different way the advice would make more sense.. Like hinging the wrist at the A3 position for example.. that's something I can implement.. but tell me to swing easy and I'll probably just not know what to do :)

Thanks again though.. I learned something!

Yes, the club isn't as far along as it should be, so you keep going until it is, and then in trying to keep going until it is, you overdo it.

And no, you probably hit a big push because your left hand grip is super weak. :)

The thing is with me though when I mentioned the advice, I have tried all of them and they haven't worked for me.

  1. That doesn't mean they're nonsense.
  2. I would actually bet that you didn't actually do them correctly. Very few people do things correctly when they're just doing them on their own.
but tell me to swing easy and I'll probably just not know what to do :)

I don't want anyone to swing easy. Shorter is not the same as easier.

Sounds familiar ;-) Obviously agree with Erik, going to make it much easier to hinge more if the grip is correct.  Like I said, wrist can't support the loading of the club.

This is @mvmac

The left picture is basically very close to the point where his shoulder has stopped turning at 90*.. Then from that point you can see that his arms go basically straight up with out any further shoulder turn until I'm assuming all the pressure is built up and at that point where I have the blue line is when the transition into the downswing starts for him..

I'm a former "over-swinger", used to go past parallel on a 7 iron.  Here's the cliff notes version to how I made it better.

- Improved my sequencing.  Good drill to do this is by practicing with tees in each arm pit and turn the torso close to 90 by the time you get to A3.  So if my arms start to load/lift at a different rate than my pivot, the tees will come out.

Swing from last weekend, can see I'm close to 90* by A3 and then I keep "stretching" to A4 with the "tees" still in.

I took a lesson from a reputed pro last spring and all we worked on wasmy over swing. He told me I over swing because of a improper coil. Some people say, "just don't take it back as far" well you cant if you coil properly!!! Its pretty darn hard to know when/where to stop in your backswing when you aren't coiling anything.

Great Drill.

When I finally turn my body before I bend down it gives me a really good feel of how my wrists are hinged at that moment in time.  It made it easier for me when I start my backswing to really try and get back to that position.  The only thing I can say is that I feel like I am really flat though, and maybe that is because I am still not going down enough with my shoulders on the turn...

I can see and feel that I am not reaching for something more once my arms get to A3 (but I know I am still)..  I really think this drill can help many over swingers like my self!

Yes the pivot is a very important piece.  I was just helping a guy the other day who was really struggling with contact, good player 2 handicap.  He would stop turning halfway through his backswing and just lifted the arms, club actually got past parallel.  So "just swing shorter" would be the worst advice in the world for him.  Gave him some basic stuff and he won a bunch of skins yesterday ;-)

Indeed. In fact, I'll revise my earlier statement.

Far too many people:

  • Lack enough torso turn while simultaneously
  • Overswinging with their arms.

If you lack enough torso turn, you'd truly have a 1/2 or 3/4 swing or something. So really, when talking about overswinging, we should be more clear: most people overswing with their arms.

    • Day 12: Same as last couple days, but focus was on recentering aspect of flow. When I recenter earlier I make decent contact most swings but if I recenter late or not at all it’s a roll of the dice.
    • A couple of things.  Some of the clubs in your bag should be dropped immediately.  A 2-iron for example with what obviously seems to be a lower swing speed or possibly not great swing yet is a definite no-no.  To be hitting that 120-140 yards, which I assume includes run, is a sign that you are not getting the ball airborne at the correct angle to maximise distance.  The reason your 3 and 5 hybrid are going the same distance is that your launch angle is better with the 5.  Loft is your friend. Ideally I would suggest going to a golf or sporting store where you can hit golf balls on a simulator without being disturbed to understand your club carry distances and hopefully swing speed.  With that information we can definitely guide you better.
    • Let us be clear, unless you have proof of cheating, you just sound like a case of sour grapes.  In our club we have a guy who won club titles for many years.  Yes, he was a low single digit handicapper, but there have been quite a few others who played at his level.  Yet his mental strength and experience helped him win in many years when he shouldn't have.  Did he sandbag.  DEFINITELY NOT.  Did he just minimize his mistakes and pull out shots as and when needed.  Definitely.
    • Day 111 - Worked on my grip and higher hands in the backswing. Full swings with the PRGR.
    • First off please forgive me if this is not a proper post or not in the proper location, still learning the ropes around here. Second, it's important that I mention I am very new to the game with only about 10 rounds of golf under my belt, most being 9 holes. Only this year have I started playing 18. That being said, I am hooked, love the game and am very eager to learn and improve. To give you an idea of my skill, the last 2 18 rounds I played were 110 and 105. Not great at all, however I am slowly improving as I learn. Had been having bad slicing issues with the driver and hybrids but after playing some more and hitting the range, I've been able to improve on that quite a bit and have been hitting more straight on average. Irons have always come easier to me as far as hitting straight for some reason. Wedges have needed a lot of improvement, but I practice chipping about 20-30 mins about 3-5 times a week and that's helped a lot. Today I went to the range and started to note down some distance data, mind you I am averaging the distances based off my best guess compared to the distance markers on the range. I do not currently own a range finder or tracker. From reading some similar posts I do understand that filling gaps is ideal, but I am having a some issues figuring out those gaps and understanding which clubs to keep and remove as some gaps are minimal between clubs. Below is an image of the chart I put together showing the clubs and average distances I've been hitting and power applied. For some reason I am hitting my hybrids around the same distances and I am not sure why. Wondering if one of them should be removed. I didn't notice a huge loft difference either. The irons I have are hand me downs from my grandfather and after playing with them a bit, I feel like they're just not giving me what could potentially be there. The feel is a bit hard/harsh and underwhelming if that makes sense and I can't seem to get decent distances from them. Wondering if I should be looking to invest in some more updated irons and if those should be muscle backs or cavity backs? My knowledge here is minimal. I have never played with modern fairway woods, only the classic clubs that are actually wood and much smaller than modern clubs. I recently removed the 4 and 5 woods from my bag as I was never using them and I don't hit them very well or very far. Wondering if I should look into some more modern fairway wood options? I appreciate any feedback or advice anyone is willing to give, please forgive my lack of knowledge. I am eager to learn! Thank you.
