My top 10. 1. Oakmont (Pa) 2. Cascata (Las Vegas, Nv) 3. Pete Dye Club (Wv) 4. Tradition at Royal Kent ( Va) 5. Spyglass (Ca) 6. Spanish Bay (Ca) 7. Half Moon Bay (Ca) 8. Wolf Creek (Nv) 9. Dunnwoody (Ga) 10. Avalon Lakes (Oh) I could add a bunch more but I think that covers it pretty much. These are always fun to do it gets you thinking of all the courses you've seen and played.

1 Spyglass... As far as pure golf it is simply an awesome test and you get both holes along the open dunes and wonderful tree lined holes. A true monster, much tougher than Pebble IMO. The coastline holes at Pebble are unmatched IMHO, but the overall course is not as good as Spyglass.

2. Royal Melborne... Years ago I was lucky enough to get to play there. I hadn';t played much golf yet back then but took it all in and realized just how awesome the course was. The bunkering was devastatingly tough for a player without too much experience.

3. Pebble Beach... The coastline holes....beautiful and challenging

4. Merion... Short and brilliant... Fast greens (lightening). And of course the wicker baskets!

5. Saticoy Country Club (Private course in Camarillo Ca.) A hidden gem. Not a drop of water and none needed. Canyon style golf, very tough and don't get above the hole, three or four putts might be in the cards.

Two more California courses I've played worth a mention are

Sandpiper (Santa Barbara)... It is called the "poor mans Pebble Beach", and lives up to the name.

La Purisima (Lompoc)...Other than Spyglass this is the toughest course I have played. Played through rolling hills terrain, when the wind is up and your off the back tees it is game on.

My favorite course in the area is Willow Metropark. They keep their course in fantastic shape and the layout is beautiful and secluded.. Lake Erie Metropark is another one in my top 2. They keep their course in amazing shape (just found out a girl I work with's dad is the super intendant).I really want to play a Nicklaus course this summer though. I never had the money last summer but I'm making decent cheddar this year so I will really like playing there.

I don't have an amazing list but I am working on it :) Orlando=near Orlando

ChampionsGate -Orlando  Florida

Curahee Golf Club - Toccoa GA

The Legends COurse by Arnold Palmer - Orlando FL

Bulle Rock - MD

Harbourside International - Chicago IL

**Cherokee Run - Conyers GA

** This course could be great, a Palmer Design that sadly isn't kept in the best shape :( The price is reasonable but the greens are spotty at best. I think they are actually converting the greens as we speak! Fingers crossed

I'm playing the University of GA course this weekend and expect this list to grow by 1. :)

I hate most of you...I really do!!!

Seriously though, I've only recently gotten to where I play enough, and make enough, and am good enough to not embarass myself to even think about playing the nicer courses.  Living in Florida I should have a change to play some good ones.  I did play both of the World Woods courses, and I was blown away at the difference between even the "decent" courses in town and that place.  I am going to be hitting up some Orlando courses during the summer (El Diablo for one I am looking forward to) and playing Hammock Beach in a two day event in October.  Can't wait for that!.  It's usually like $200 to play there, which I really can't justify to the wife, but the event is a FL Golf Association event; two rounds for $60 each, plus decent rates at the hotel on site so we're making a vacation out of it.  How awesome is that?! :)

Here are some of my favorites....

  • Arcadia Bluffs
  • Country Club of North Carolina (Dogwood and Cardinal)
  • 2 of the Pinehurst courses (didn't play #2 unfortunately)
  • Olympia Fields (North Course)
  • Troon North (Scottsdale) - Played both 18s
  • Treetops Resort (Played all the 18s, plus ThreeTops. ThreeTops is ranked the best par 3 course in the country - I'd have to agree!!)
  • The Orchards (Washington, MI)
  • TPC Scottsdale (Stadium Course)

Pine Valley

Shinnicock Hills

Oakmont

Winged Foot

Ridgewood

Pacific Dunes

Bandon Dunes

Indian Creek

Pinetree

Seminole

Merion

My favorites from that group are Shinnicock Hills and Pacific Dunes. Shinnicock is just awesome from the first tee to the 18th green and Pacific Dunes is the most fun and interesting .Of the private clubs, Pine Valley was the most accomodating and friendly and  at Seminole, the whole place had a nose-in-the-air attitude about it.

I haven't really played any big name courses, except for TPC, but these 4 are really fun challenging courses.

Pine Valley is the best, fairest test while Cypress is the most interesting due to basically three different types of layout......parklands, dune, ocean front.

    • Agree. The next omission needs to be that ridiculous team concept. Nobody cares about a team when they really don’t represent anything except being a group of diminished morality and/or washed up pro golfers. Or wait, we’ve also got total nobodies who’ve accomplished nothing who now get a participation trophy! Doesn’t that sound invigorating!
    • LIV moving to 72 holes is a subtle admission that 54 holes was nothing but a joke all along.
    • I was going to start a thread, but this seems like the place.  Yesterday I played my matchplay match at my local club.  My opponent is a notorious sandbagger by reputation.  The pro once pulled his tournament rounds from the past several years and said that it is impossible his tournament rounds are legit based on his handicap. here is what happened last night.  I am getting 4 shots from him.  His current handicap index is 15.3 i shot 45 on the front.   Was down 4 after nine, he had three birdies and shot even par. I was closed out on thirteen, we halved with a bogey.  That bogey put him one over par for his round.   He then took a triple on 14 and then left. As if that wasn’t bad enough, he lied about his score.   I wrote down on my scorecard what the score was.  He put higher values that didn’t affect the outcome of the match to pad his score and apparently make it not look as obvious.   He shot 36 on the front, but claimed 40.  The higher values for his score were in the online scoring app our club uses.  He did it this way: I won #7. He had a 2 foot putt for par that if he made would still lose the hole.   He picked up and said it didn’t matter since I won.  He took a 5 instead of a 4 after picking up a gimme. on #8 his approach shot on this par 4 was 8 inches.  I verbally conceded the putt but I had hit into a hazard.  I finished the hole with a 6.  Instead of birdie he put in for par. on #9, another par 4, his approach was to 18 inches.  I missed my par putt and then knowing how close I verbally conceded the putt.  I missed my bogey putt, he never conceded mine.  Instead of birdie he put down a bogey. He padded his score by 4 shots on the front.  And then did again on 10.  I rinsed one and made 6 on a par 4.  I putted out and he was fishing balls out of the lake so I drove off to the next tee.  He had 15 feet laying two but claimed a 5.     love to know the odds of a 15 handicap being even thru 12 holes on a round of golf.
    • They've been chuckling since they hooked the shark. I think Greg doesn't realize the jokes on him.
