Has anyone tried the new Cleveland CG-2 irons ? They are made with the same composite material they used for the CG-10 wedges which are awsome. If they have anywhere near the feel of the wedges I would be really impressed. I have been looking at the X-18 pros but these new CG-2's are making me think again ...

I briefly considered giving the CG-1s a try before I settled on the 680s. They were classic looking clubs that set up nicely, really a nice looking set of clubs. I didn't hit them, but if you can get on a launch monitor, have at it. Know your ball flight tendencies - the CG-2s probably hit the ball higher than most. That may be good or bad.

What are you playing now?

I'm playing X-14's and I hit them very well, though I tend to hook the short irons. I'm looking for a little less offset, more control, lower flight and an extra 10 yards on the long irons. Besides, my hands are itching for a new set and the CG-2's look awfully nice and are made of the same composite material the CG-10 wedge is made of and I love that ! I also prefer the Dynamic Gold shaft ...

Get on the launch monitor, hit some balls (try to hit them with at least one long, mid, and short iron) in a dome if you have to (I see you live in Indiana), and get fitted. The CG-1 is a nice set from what I've read and heard.

Coincidentally our Cleveland rep was here today. I only got to take a look at their new irons, I'll be trying them out on Friday. Just at a glance, the CG2s looked a lot nicer, to me, than their TA series irons, along with the CG1s. The CG1 7-iron that I saw had the smallest head I've ever seen on an iron. So, although they've changed the looks to please my eye a little more, that small head is kinda scary. But, like I stated earlier, I'll be giving them a crack on Friday.

I hit a 6 iron at the store and it felt great. I compared it to similar Mizzuno, Nike, Titliest clubs ... I hit it better than all the others. The club head is kind of small as you say - like all nimble sports cars - but I didn't have a problem making contact. It is also less offset than all the others. So you can hit it hard and still manage to send it straight. I just wish I could demo the entire set oudoors ...

Let me know what you think.

Some of the online stores have 30 day playtest guarantees... Even if it cost you 10% of the purchase price in a restocking fee, I think it'd be worth it. And I don't think they have a restocking fee. There's always eBay, too.

    • God I hate when golf can’t give me n+1 day of success. Drives me up the wall when my body is, FU! Im like, ok let’s check the vid. Yep too much turn, arms getting behind me. Ok, I work on that. Get the feel back for a shorter swing. Confirm with video. Then going back to arms down stuff.  Arms down, nope it’s hands out towards the ball. Oh, you get arms down better. Guess what, you don’t get to rotate and you hit 6 inches behind the ball. Yay!  Maybe I should have walked off the range and not wasted my time. I wish there was a body alert system when it’s going to a SOB for the day. 😭 OK rant over, I’ll be back at this tomorrow.

    • I mean there has to be some thought. For eg., something like 'soft knees and wrists' at set up and maybe a dynamic 'left arm to chin' as a trigger to start DS. I have these one or two anchor thoughts and have served me well. In fact, my wildest swings are the one where I have no thoughts or if I forget to walk thru my anchor thoughts. In contrast my best rounds are where I am consistent with the anchor thoughts.    OTOH, if I am running my entire half hour lesson (hypothetical) with some pro that I had last Saturday or whatever before every swing then I'm probably in trouble before I even get over the ball.
    • Two bits. Bit 1 The NCAA's appeal of Brendan Sorsby being granted a temporary injunction will not be heard until February, so there will be nothing to prevent Sorsby from playing the full season and potential CFP.  Bit 2 The Big Ten Conference will hold a meeting and is expected to ban all of its athletic programs from playing Texas Tech in the regular season. Georgia has done the same. The SEC will meet to consider a similar ban. Fellow Big 12 members TCU and Kansas State are spearheading a similar ban, but the conference charter might not allow it. Meanwhile, Big 12 athletic directors are meeting this week to explore what options the conference might have.
    • No, but I'm also in disagreement that golfers have no thoughts over the golf ball, and/or don't ever think I've met someone I truly believe is thinking nothing but "target" or something on most shots.
