Hey guys

Newest problem to my game(theres always something) is i started hitting behind the ball. Not like an inch or some but a decent amount. I have even been doing it off the tee which is pretty weird to take a divot with a driver or 3 wood off the deck.

I normally play 9 holes after work so I thought maybe it was just me being tired but it has been happening for a week or so and is pretty frustrating. Just wondering if anyone had any tips or tricks to help me out.

To get your swing low point more forward.
1. Get more forward with your hips at impact.
2. Extend your spine and straighten your legs more into impact.
3. Maintain the hinge in your right wrist longer.

Explain Extend the spine? And is straightening the leg just the left leg, or both the left and right?

sticking your butt out

basically just get your weight forward, dont dip but just move more weight onto your front leg and the rest will follow
its not a major adjustment either just keep doing it til you're happy with where your divots are

Extend the spine--in the forward swing as your hands go from waist high--->into impact your lumbar spine goes into extension. The more you extend your spine into impact, the more leverage you will have on the golf ball.

Best to be straightening both legs, but definitely straighten the front leg into impact (left leg for a righty)

The golfers that extend the most, get hips forward the most, and straighten the most hit the ball the farthest.

Disregard crazy long backswing--normal humans should not attempt replicating this.

you are hitting fat because you are swaying back without returning back to your original position. The easy solution is practice hitting balls with your feet together. if you sway you will lose your balance.

I agree with the swaying back suggestion. It sounds like you are moving laterally back instead of turning at the hips. The feet together drill is a good one. You want to make sure you get your weight forward. Staying on your back foot through impact causes this as well. I would be careful with how you take the "straigtening your forward leg at impact" advice. I'm not saying it's not good advice, but that can be taken out of context and cause more issues. Hyper extending the forward leg while trying to straighten it is one of the things that led to Tiger's surgery.

I had this issue come up earlier this year and I found out that I wasnt tranfering my weight forward. After I fixed that it was fixed instantly. Not saying its your problem but check it out.

another item that you can be aware of is keeping your hand extended to the ground without having a bend in your elbow. sometimes, if my set up is not correct so remember to check to make sure that you hands are hanging naturally extended.

another trick that I have done in the pass is to slightly press down prior to begining the backswing and make sure that you make a circular backswing.

    • I mean there has to be some thought. For eg., something like 'soft knees and wrists' at set up and maybe a dynamic 'left arm to chin' as a trigger to start DS. I have these one or two anchor thoughts and have served me well. In fact, my wildest swings are the one where I have no thoughts or if I forget to walk thru my anchor thoughts. In contrast my best rounds are where I am consistent with the anchor thoughts.    OTOH, if I am running my entire half hour lesson (hypothetical) with some pro that I had last Saturday or whatever before every swing then I'm probably in trouble before I even get over the ball.

    • No, but I'm also in disagreement that golfers have no thoughts over the golf ball, and/or don't ever think I've met someone I truly believe is thinking nothing but "target" or something on most shots.
    • StuM,  I have, in the past, added a left handed club. (Ususally a 7 iron) However, I usually take a stroke penalty and move the ball to where I want it.  I play for fun and in a pinch can use theback side if my club if I don't want the penalty stroke.    RetiredOldMan,  Terry
