Best Golf Job

The thread "What do you do for a Living" got me thinking about this. What are some of the best jobs out there that allow you to play lots of golf? I work in insurance, and when I first started, heard all sorts of things about the amount of golf played in the industry. We'll take clients out every so often on a Friday for a round, but not so often that blows your mind away. I read a lot about people wanting to be a golf pro so they can play more golf, when in reality, you end up playing much less golf because the job is so demanding. Where is that perfect job?!!!

The money is ok for what I'm doing right now, it allows me to play fairly often at some nice courses, but are there other jobs that might not be as busy in the office, make decent money, and allow to get out to the course more during the week? This could just be my dreamworld thinking such a job exists, but I would love to get into something that allows more direct interaction with people and especially with some that like to get out on the course fairly regularly. If all else fails, I guess I'll just keep trying to win the lotto...seems like a pretty failproof plan to me.

A buddy of mine became a PGA teaching professional. He sells water in Atlanta. He said exactly what you did... he found that he wasn't getting to actually play any golf.

A lot of industries that relied on leisure activities with clients have curtailed much of it over the last few decades because they can no longer deduct these items (rounds of golf, meals, sports event tickets) on their taxes.

I know a guy who is a "night" trader in the Chinese stock market. He plays golf, everyday. I guess when your "work" is opposite the normal US hours you can afford to play during the day. Another buddy is a DJ for a few local bar/night clubs. He also works 9pm-3am 3-4 days a week so he takes full advantage of the 11am price reductions during the weekdays.

I guess if you like what you are doing, and have the time and money to play a bunch, why not? I have the normal 8ish-4:45ish job so I dont play much during the week, but I would say I get to play in 10-15 work related golf outings a year. The best part is we usually play out of town, so there is travel days, and they always play early (I never have to pay for these rounds) and then the rest of the day Im off.

Being Alice Cooper gets you plenty of play time.

But clearly, Tour Pro is the best job in golf. Good luck with the application process

I'd like to be a GM of a golf course. When I was in college and worked as a cart boy, the GM at our course played several times a week.

How about International Golf Course Reviewer? You get to play, free food and board and travel. Easy enough to whip up a 3-4 pg article. Too bad such a job doesn't exist. At least that pays anything.

Being rich is your best bet, that would allow you to play as much golf as you want. Pretty much any other job in golf requires more actual work than playing of golf.

I'm a Mortgage Broker
I golf every day...or at least 5 days a week at a minimum (this includes practice)

I have no boss, no sales targets, no set hours and can work anywhere w an internet connection and my cell phone
I will often eat lunch at the course, catch up on some work and head out to play......or show up for breakfast, work then play
I also have a wife and 2 kids....so I make it work

Evenings are not great for me to play, so i play during the day or early mornings, when they are still sleeping
It ensures i have adequate (sp?) family time and yet still play a pile of golf
Wifey also let's me play one round on the weekend w my friends (again I go early in the am, just prefer it) as i always play alone in the week

I can honestly say, if i didnt have this job, now w a family, i probably would hardly ever play
YTD I have over 50 rounds in, and this is from 3.1 months of golf (16.12 rounds per month)

I love my job
It allows me to golf, spend time w my family, make a damn good living (and no student loan debt like my H/S buddies, who are up to their a$$ in student loan debt making $60k/year......shoot me now)
I spend as many hours on the course as I do in the office per week

Being a teacher is actually pretty darn good for golf. I definitely don't make a lot of $ but sometimes I'm able to sneak in 9 holes after school not to mention having 2 1/2 months for summer, 2 weeks for winter break and a week for spring break. Sprinkle in some teacher planning days which means I'm out of school by lunch time and can get a round in.

I used to run a search marketing agency with a few partners and was able to golf often (3-4 times a week) but since then, I've sold out and taken a in-house position...moneys great, time not so much.

I work for the Government and I play 4 to 5 times a week. Flex scheduling is the greatest thing on earth if you are a golfer.

The best two jobs I've ever had for golf were the two worst jobs I've had. One was washing dishes starting at 5pm and working until midnight - plenty of time for golf before work; and the other was making plastic bags in a factory starting at 6am and working until 2 in the afternoon - plenty of time for golf after work. Mind you, those were both summer jobs while I was at studying at university (which is also a good occupation for playing golf if you don't have many classes). Now I'm in the "real world" and can only play at the weekends.

Manufacturing plant workers on 2nd & 3rd shift are able to get a lot of golf in during the day.

I'm a registered nurse. I work three 12 hour shifts a week which leaves me plenty of time for golf. I have played 37 rounds so far this year plus all the practice rounds and range time. I'm married though with three kids quick take priority.

I'm heading back to university soon, so I'll have some time in the mornings/afternoons before or after class and while I'm not working part-time or studying, but now it's much less of a "finding the time" problem and much more the "finding the money" issue...

I can relate to this! I am in my last year, so my class schedule is pretty light and my free time will be abundant, but the money, not so much.

On topic: My uncle works for a billboard company selling advertisements and he as well as most of the other people in his office get to play golf somewhat regularly.

Especially considering the actual amount of "work" government employees do in a 40 hour work week is probably 3-4 hours (if that).
