Bill, I love you to death man, but for now you'll drop some strokes if you keep your short game, pitches and chips, as consistent and simple as possible.

I just practice other shots because I enjoy it. When the odd occasion does come up where I have to hit a high flop or low spinner under a tree branch or something like that, I'm pretty confident simply because I've practiced it. Just wanted to put this up here again - a clear demonstration of pitching from hardpan. The rate at which the club is "thrown" (but with "gravity" or the "pivot" - however you feel it, it shouldn't be an "active" thing. This creates a relatively decent sized "flat spot" - the AoA is roughly -3 to +3 for quite a good stretch, and a ball hit anywhere in that spot will likely be very good.

The club I used in the video above has 21° of bounce.

It's not WIDE, though. Even 10° of bounce can be too much if the sole is very wide.

I can't really answer specifically, because it depends on a lot of things: sole width, how hard "hardpan" truly is, your technique (degrees begin to matter), etc.

What wedges do you use and how much bounce do you have on them? I think you have Vokey's?

54-12 and a 60-04 just like my sig says.... Been thinking about maybe going to a 52-56 and keep my 60.

You could also go 52, 58, which is what I do. For the 56*, should be fine "gliding" it through hardpan. Next time we meet up we'll hit some shots out of crappy lies.

58 is so close to my 60, other than getting a 58 with more bounce, what would I gain..?

Sorry, meant go 52, 58 and take the 60 out of the bag. I'm not a fan of wedges with only 4* of bounce, especially with the lies we can get in SoCal.

Hi all,

ive been trying this lately and have moderate succes. If i have a good lie i am always hitting it very well which is awesome. However, when i had a bad lie (less fluffy or in a divot) ive had multiple times where i would just skull it somehow. Part of this might be not enough weight forward, but ive also had it when i absolutely had my weight forward. Are there any other causes for this?

To clarify, i consiously let the club fall and find its way back to the ball. I guess somehow i let the club a little to free or something,, but as I understood it, the purpose was to not grip tight and try to let gravity(and bounce) do the work.

I also seem to remember some explanation about how you could get different types of shot(high-low) but i cant seem to find it anymore.

Without seeing video (you should post it to your My Swing thread), the speed of your pivot is the leading suspect. It has to remain fast or the club can pass your hands prematurely. This method works really well from the rough, though, because even if you do line things up prematurely you have margin of error (the ball sitting up a little).

Yes @slightlymad this motion works great out of rough and sand. Quick example to go along with what @iacas is talking about.
