I understand the rule because pros used to blow off pro ams, but come on, give a 10 minute buffer and/or fine him per hole missed. He was racing to get there. Because of the harshness of this rule, his playing partners, who paid a lot of money, got screwed out of playing 17 holes with one of the nicest guys on tour. It wasn't just Furyk that suffered.

And no free pass for Fluff, I don't care how many chores he may have had, if you're boss still isn't there 20 minutes before tee time, you do something about it.

Would they have DQ's him if he was on his way to the course and got a flat tire? I see it as no different.

According to the article, the only exception is an injury or a family emergency. So I'd say they would DQ for a flat tire. If something is important to be at, you need to allow yourself time for an unexpected situation.

none of which includes "waking up my boss, because he's so stupid that he relies on a hotel clock radio."

Actually he'd probably have been fine if he'd relied on the hotel clock radio, since he was using his cell phone alarm and the battery died. Oops. Hotel clocks have always worked for me (after you set them to the correct time, which is usually wrong by 45 minutes or more).

I think the rule is fine. It's basically the same as if you miss your tee time for the regular tournament, and the pro-am is just about as important to the Tour as the actual tournament. Furyk has it right: he made a mistake, he acknowledges that, and he didn't express any frustration about the rule, just his own error. I hope he doesn't miss winning the Cup by a small margin, because that'd really be painful...

I agree, the Pro-AM's are not a big money deal for the sponsor, but their impact is important to the sponsorship of a tournament. If it weren't for his popularity with sponsors, a guy like Strickland might never have received enough exemptions that allowed him to play his way back into the PGA. Why they don't have a few alternates on hand is beyond me, except maybe the players association resisted it.

With Tiger and Phil out on vacation, the new star of the PGA tour is harsh rulings.

So......when rules are enforced, they are "harsh"? There have been three occasions where people have broken the rules and the appropriate penalty applied. How is that harsh?

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

I think the point is more that the rule has done what it was supposed to. Players don't just skip pro-ams on a whim because they feel like it. Furyk made an honest mistake and missed his tee time by 5 minutes. I mean, if he had joined his group in the first fairway do you think the corporate big-wig he was supposed to play with would have called foul and demanded his money back? I doubt it. At least he would have gotten to play 17.5 holes with Furyk, instead of the 0 he gets to play with Jim now.

I think it's a good rule, but they should take it on a case-by-case basis. From what I've heard Furyk has done this one other time in his long career, not exactly skipping epidemic. If they give Furyk a break they PGA TOUR is worried about one thing: setting a precedent for other players to skip when ever they want to. Unless someone else honestly accidentally sleeps in, rushes to get to the course, and misses by 5 minutes I doubt an all-encompassing precedent would be created.

The problem here lies with human laziness and typical American behavior sadly, and I am an American and lazy frequently. If the previous tour players would not have abused the leniency of tour they would not have had to make and enforce these rules. It is not nice scenario and I feel bad for him but knowing cell phones I would have used a back up. Furthermore, Fluff knows knows his habits, if he wasn't warming up or present at a normally present time I would be calling his room number but if he didn't know where Furyk was staying he would not be able to call him and more than likely called his non-functioning cell phone.

They definitely need to take a look at this and change it. Instead of a Zero Tolerance policy how about have like 1 or 2 warnings before a DQ. And if you're late, OK maybe let that slide as opposed to blowing it off completely..

When i know I have to be at work I leave 15-20 minutes early just so that if I do get a flat tire I STILL WONT BE LATE.
If I have something VERY important to do or a big meeting/presentation I'm up a few hours before it. Not twenty minutes before like I did when I was a stoner in High School. Grow up Furyk. You had a good shot at making $10 MILLION UFCKING dollars and you blew it. DUMB ASS.

Totally uncalled for. He made a mistake and his alarm didn't go off. Maybe he should have had a second alarm, but that's not itself an indication that he didn't take it seriously.

Agreed. Now if he was pulling a Michelle Wie and was whinning and crying about it, slamming him would be warranted. Being a man is taking responsibility and accepting his fate. Which he did gracefully, at least in all the articles I have read. I am sure he said the same stuff everyone else would say internally like wth, why didn't anyone check on me, but he did not express it anywhere else to my knowledge.

Hotels and motels will make a wake-up call if requested. Fluff should have called if he noticed that his man had not arrived at the site to prepare for the day. Pro-ams are money makers for tournaments and are necessary if you want a good pay day. Because you play a game doesn't allow you to make the rules. If you don't like the rules then don't play the game. Because there is an honor system it allows dishonorable people to cheat.

I agree with the people who are sick of the whining, want to see the rules changed, want to see it taken on a case-by-case basis, etc.

The rules are the rules. They're in place for a reason and the best rules - the BEST rules - are cut and dry, black and white, and very straightforward.

Jim broke the rule, he suffers the consequence. Sucks to be him, he's not a serial oversleeper, but that's the rule and it was enforced properly.

Your right. We should always give a nice low clap, as we do when a pro makes a short putt, when ever we see the rules enforced properly. That will also cut down on 75% of the post here as there will be very little to debate.

How's this for irony? In my Tiger Woods PGA tour game last night, I beat Adam Scott in the 3rd round of the match play championships. I go to play the last round today and... Guess who my opponent is? Yep. And he showed up on time.

    • Just stumbled onto the article.  Totally random and thought it might be interested to hear other thoughts. maybe I am tired of all the LIV crap and  this just caught my attention.
    • Day 1: Spent some time hitting some balls. Working on my hips and a “soft” and straight trail arm.
    • Slight digression on the way to my point. Back in the day there were a lot of people who said that Tiger won because of “the Tiger effect” where people pushed too hard and made mistakes trying to catch him and fell by the wayside. I thought that was BS. It was just that he was that much better than them. I don’t think anything has changed my mind on that.    The hype about Miles Russell is very limited. I’ve seen nothing about him outside of some fairly hardcore golf websites. But I think that the reason those people are talking about him is because he is very good. Same as Tiger. And like I said he just broke one of Tiger’s records. That gets hardcore golf fans to pay attention.
