Wondering if this catches on if one day it could be considered a major achievement? If the points system is tuned up and the coverage keeps going up a notch. Seems like it is picking up steam since there are other players in the mix than just Tiger. (ok VJ too) But point being there is a lot more talent out there than the typical Tiger sweep for another 10 mil in the bank.

Thoughts?

The Players championship should be a major. Ahead of the PGA in my opinion. Playoffs still haven't caught on well enough to be a Major. Maybe never will.

Yeah, the coverage has been top notch this weekend. Oops wrong thread - thought this was about US Open Tennis. Is there golf on TV somewhere this weekend?

I don't think they will ever move another tournament up to the status of a "major". Think of what that would do to the record books.

I mean, heck, even the PGA Championship is barely considered a major.

As it's the culmination of only a single championship - the PGA Tour - I doubt it. It don't argue that it's exciting but would you make the same argument for the Race to Dubai/Dubai World Challenge?

All the Majors are open to players from all over the world and non-Tour members (PGA, European or any other) they can go through qualifying to get in. The FedEx Playoffs aren't - Lee Westwood, the Molinaris and Migeul Angel Jimenez, to name but four, aren't eligible, for example.

Not a Major, but a golf marathon. The cup should be replaced with golden golf-shoe-sneakers.

Heck, I'm not going to go that far with tennis coverage this weekend, since the exclusive rights to the evening sessions are held by a channel no one gets.

True - at least we're only being shut out of the golf coverage during daylight hours.

Just what we need, another major in america.

Im all for golf going the same way as tennis. Its a global game and over the next ten years with the olympics in 2016 we will be seeing a lot of chinese, indian, pakistani, south korean etc golfers coming through and becoming big starts.

There should be the Open(british) the U.S open and then can the masters and the pga in favour of a French open and say an Australian. I mean who cares about the pga anyway? its the major that everyone would put as last place of the four (except maybe tom watson). The masters? great tournament, fantastic course but because its invitation only it excludes players that should be there in favour of past winners. Dont get me wrong its nice to see the old boys out playing but very few can put a score together on the course and very few ever make the cut.

just my opinion.

Driver - Callaway FTI
3 Wood - Callaway Big Bertha
Irons - Mizuno MX100

Not an opinion there, but fact. Why the Masters is a major is beyond me, but the last time I said that, the forum almost imploded, so I won't pursue the point.

I don't think the playoff needs a major. They already got all the best players gathered, battling for the seasonlong FedEx Cup (though the pre-playoffs points don't mean a whole lot in the end). As for The Players, no, it should not be a major. I think it's fine the way it is with 4 majors. Get too many of them and they will lose some of the excitement.

Yes, the prospect of winning 10 million dollars is enough incentive to draw the best players to the playoffs every year. There's no need for another Major there. As you said, 4 Majors is the right amount to keep them as a 'special' event. Even one more, like the Champions Tour wouldn't seem right to me.
A great shot is when you go for it and pull it off. A smart shot is when you don't have the guts to try it. ~ Phil Mickelson.

I hear ya all. Pretty much agree. Tradition will win out.

However MAYBE the playoffs MIGHT one day be bigger spectacle than one of the majors? I do agree with one of the comments about it being basically an American event. That would be part of the tweaking of the points to include a more global field or maybe global venues. (or not) Heck if NASCAR can pull it off. Maybe there is something in the golf playoffs that will one day resonate?

From what I have been reading, NASCAR isn't pulling it off too well, at least not according to race attendance and television ratings. There's alot more NASCAR could do with the playoffs to make it more exciting. As for golf, I'm happy with four majors, though I do like the idea of havin at least two being hosted in other countries, UK and maybe a rotation of countries for the 2nd.

Of the 4, the Masters does seem to be the least likely to determine the overall best golfer in the world at that moment in time. "The best player at Augusta National" though, is more than enough though to edge out "The Players' Championship" (don't get me started on island greens).

    • Two bits. Bit 1 The NCAA's appeal of Brendan Sorsby being granted a temporary injunction will not be heard until February, so there will be nothing to prevent Sorsby from playing the full season and potential CFP.  Bit 2 The Big Ten Conference will hold a meeting and is expected to ban all of its athletic programs from playing Texas Tech in the regular season. Georgia has done the same. The SEC will meet to consider a similar ban. Fellow Big 12 members TCU and Kansas State are spearheading a similar ban, but the conference charter might not allow it. Meanwhile, Big 12 athletic directors are meeting this week to explore what options the conference might have.
    • No, but I'm also in disagreement that golfers have no thoughts over the golf ball, and/or don't ever think I've met someone I truly believe is thinking nothing but "target" or something on most shots.
    • StuM,  I have, in the past, added a left handed club. (Ususally a 7 iron) However, I usually take a stroke penalty and move the ball to where I want it.  I play for fun and in a pinch can use theback side if my club if I don't want the penalty stroke.    RetiredOldMan,  Terry
    • So, Brendan Sorsby, Texas Tech transfer QB, was found guilty of sports betting by the NCAA. He admitted to it. He placed thousands of bets over multiple years while at Indiana and Cincinnati. This included betting on his own teams.  The NCAA rules ban athletes from betting on any sport (college or pro).  A retired visiting judge from Tarrant County, Texas has put an injunction on the NCAA ruling. He is a visiting judge because the first judge was a graduate and big fan of Texas Tech, and he recused himself. The judged ruled the following... "Under Curry's order, Sorsby is permitted to play for Texas Tech's 2026 season on the condition that he continues his treatment for a gambling and anxiety disorder and serves a two-game suspension (missing games against Abilene Christian and Oregon State)."  Don't get me wrong, I don't particularly care for the NCAA. That still doesn't mean that a college can choose when or where to say, "Yea we agree to these rules for all our sports, well except in this case." Here is a breakdown from S&W. The Hidden Weapon in Sorsby’s Injunction: How a Lubbock County Court Order Quietly Neutralized the NCAA’s Most Powerful Enforcement Tool - Law Offices of Snell & Wilmer By Ryan J. Regula On June 8, 2026, Lubbock County District Court Judge Ken Curry issued a temporary injunction in Brendan Sorsby v. National Collegiate Athletic Association, Cause No. DC-2026-CV-0791 (99th Judicial District... The main judgement made sense. Sorsby, I am going to have all this harm done to me if I don't get to play. The Judge, I agree. The penalty for gambling is too harsh, so here are all these things you must do, and I will grant this injunction against the NCAA. Basically, an analogy would be when a person goes into court for a DUI and they agree to all these other things to not end up in jail.  What sucks for the NCAA is the NCAA has appealed to Texas’ Seventh Court of Appeals, based in Amarillo. All four justices that preside over the court are graduates of Texas Tech University School of Law. It would be hilarious if all four of them had to recuse themselves 🤣. For those who like to read legal rulings...
    • The chatter in my brain is when the distance is between clubs since I am pretty weak at shortened backswings, etc. I try to simply decide if being long or short is the better outcome and choose my club based on that and simply not even try for the “real” distance.  For me a full normal swing is what I strive for.
