I've seriously considered reteaching myself to putt right handed. Ive only been playing for 3 months so if I was ever gonna do it, now would be the time.

On the plus side, it is a rare occasion when your playing partner asks to try your driver, wedge, putter, etc.

Lefty equipment has come a long way in the last decade. I remember when I first got my starter set that it was a minor miracle to find anything nice in left-handed. Now, I even see more left-handed golfers than I ever had before. At the driving range yesterday, there were 4 lefties out there (including me.)

The only thing I dislike about being a lefty is that most courses don't set up well for a left handed draw and that is the only shot I play..

I feel your pain completely.

As far as demoing stuff - it's rough. I do the golf show thing in the winter and they have tons of LH stuff to demo. Other than that and the scraps at Golf Galaxy and Golfsmith, it's a rough go. I've had to get good at finding tons of reviews & feedback online and buying untested stuff. For the most part, it's worked out okay. A further point... I'm phasing Adams stuff out of my bag completely except for, maybe, the hybrids. They're not a lefty-friendly company IMO. The companies that do higher volume (TM, Callaway, Ping) are the most 'lefty-friendly' because stores stock all of their stuff, knowing they'll sell it. No retail store is going to stock product it won't sell.

Current Gear Setup: Driver: TM R9 460, 9.5, Stiff - 3W: TM R9, 15, stiff - Hybrid: Adams Idea Pro Black, 18, stiff - Irons: Callaway X Forged 09, 3-PW, PX 5.5 - SW: Callaway X Series Jaws, 54.14 - LW: Callaway X Series Jaws, 60.12 - Putter: PING Redwood Anser, 33in.

I have 11 month old twin boys. I am seriously considering making them right handed golfers no matter what. What do you lefties think? Do you think it will limit their potential if they are left handed playing from the right side? Don't want to do that but know the difficulties lefties face.

i think if you start them off young as righty's they will get comforatble and never think about going lefty. when i was young i picked up being left handed because my dad was left handed and that was the only set of clubs we had for a long time so during the summer when i was home and he was at work i would go down to the local park and practice. i think if he was right handed that would of possibly made me right handed, who knows. i guess one good thing is i never have to worry about people wanting to demo all my gear with their crappy swings!!! :) i have a friend that can golf both right and left handed. pretty amazing to watch him grab either one and still have a pure swing.

I am what is called cross dominate (throw Left, write right, etc.). I can switch hit OK in baseball or golf. I play right handed because equipment is easier to find and I am probably a better player from the right (but only marginally so). If I had any left handed kids/grandkids I would let them find their own way to play.

I'm left handed (64 yrs old) and has not been easy finding equipment for any sport especially golf. I have started my 4 yr old grandson with just putting and hitting an iron and have him setting up righty and he seems comfortable with it.

Not every "lefty" golfs naturally as a lefty. Same goes for righties. Most left shooting hockey players are right handed.

From what I was always told you want your dominate hand on the top of a hockey stick so in theory most nighties should be lefties. I throw right handed but play hockey/golf/baseball from the left side.

It's whatever feels natural. As a natural righty, I can make contact when I bat/shoot/swing as a lefty, but it feels weak - very very weak.

Lefty in a right handed world here.

I write and eat left handed, but shift a tranny, play guitar, throw a ball, swing a bat, and play golf right handed.

My left handedness gives me wicked control over the fretboard of a guitar, and I have power in the right side of my body that doesn't have the same control.

I've thought about trying to go lefty with a golf club, but that is about it. Maybe when a set of lefty clubs falls into my lap.......

I couldn't imagine playing golf right handed. Some can do it, but I wouldn't force my son to be right handed. Heck, I'd rather him be a lefty so I could pass my golf cubs on, but he isn't. He is very right handed and I think it would be freakish to try and change that.

Sorry for Hijacking the thread but I have thought about "what if my kid is a lefty" in the past and when I reading the posts I had to get opinions. Its not the end of the world to golf left handed but as I am playing with my south paw friends it makes me realize that they can never hit my clubs and have all the other problems mentioned. I would love to have a little lefty pitcher in the family though. Thanks for the input.

Used to coach little league, at the end of every practise I'd pitch to'em for an hour or so, they loved trying to hit my lefty curve ball.

  • 3 years later...

Saw something unusual this morning when I was mowing. Not worth a new thread so I'll stick it in this old one.

I was waiting for a group to tee off so I could mow the rough areas near their tee box. All four golfers in the group were left handed. I thought hmmm I've never seen that before.

Just as I was getting done mowing that area a single behind them came to the tee box so I watched him tee off as well. He was also left handed.

I'm thinking what in the heck is going on? Some kind of special rates for lefties today? :-D

    • Makes sense.  Like I said, I wouldn't have been upset at their original offer either, and based on the fine print it seems like they've held up their end of the deal.
    • If you've only had to adjust retroactively one time in 8 years and have around 5 people each year without handicaps, that's like 40-50 people total so it sounds like you're doing a pretty good job. I think your questions give enough to go off of. This might be a good way to get new people to actually post a few scores during the 6 weeks leading into the first event. Something like "New members will be eligible for tournament money once they have at least 3 posted rounds in GHIN" or something like that. If they can get 3 rounds in prior to their first event, then they're eligible. If not, they'll soon become eligible after an event or two assuming they play a little bit outside of events.
    • This is a loooooong winded narrative so if you don't like long stories, move on. 😉 Our senior club typically gets about 25 new members each year. We lose about 25 members each year for various reasons (moved to FL/AZ, disabled, dead, too expensive). Of the new members, usually 20 have an active GHIN handicap. About 5 each year do not have a GHIN handicap. When they join our club, we give each member a state association membership that includes GHIN handicapping services. We play a series of handicapped tournaments over the summer. When we sign up a new member who does not have a GHIN handicap, we attempt to give them an estimated index until they have sufficient scores posted to have an actual GHIN index.  Our first event typically is around May 15 so, in theory, a new member has about 6 weeks to post a few scores. Posting season in the Mitten starts April 1. Inevitably, several of the unhandicapped individuals seem  to either not play until the first tournament or can't figure out how to enter scores (hey, they are seniors). That situation then leads to my contacting the new member and asking a series of questions: a. Did you ever have a GHIN handicap? If yes, which State and do you recall what it was? b. Do you have an alternate handicap through a non-GHIN handicap service or a league? c. What do you think your average score was last year (for 9 or 18) d. What was your best score last year? Where did you play and which tee was used? e. What do you consider a very good score for yourself? Based on their responses I attempt to give them an index that makes them competitive in the first couple events BUT does not allow them to win their flight in the first couple events. We don't want the new members to finish last and at the same time, we don't want someone with a "20" playing handicap to win the third flight with a net 57. In the event some new member did shoot a net 57, we also advise everyone that we can and will adjust handicaps retroactively when it is clear to us that a member's handicap does not accurately reflect their potential. We don't like to adjust things retroactively and in the 8 years I have chaired the Handicap Committee, we have only done it once. So here are the questions to the mob: Any ideas how to do this better? Any questions one might ask an unhandicapped individual to better estimate their index/handicap? Would it be reasonable to have a new player play once (or more?) without being eligible to place in the money?
