So I have been playing alot of free golf for my birthday and have been slicing the driver. Not my other clubs just my driver. Why can this be??? Some of the swings feel like I am just taking a slap at the ball. Maybe I am just feeling nervous with the driver and comfortable with my irons and hybrids. Thanks for the help

im sure there is at least one swing flaw. Should take a video of your swing and post in the swing analysis section.

I slice my driver but not my other clubs as well. If you're the same as me . . if you hopped on a trackman you would see that you slice all your clubs but that as the shaft gets longer and the loft gets less, the slice gets more and more apparent. Whereas you might not notice it at all on a 5 iron, you will probably see it, at least a little, in your 5w or 3w. Do you find your shots go a bit high and short?

If you really only slice your driver and swing your other clubs great . . maybe you need a new driver? I don't know how common this problem is, though. I think, statistically speaking, you are probably like me . . .

Maybe you are just trying to swing the driver too hard (trying to hit it as far as you can) and that is causing you to start your downswing with your hands instead of hips and creating an OTT swing path.

You may also need a different flex shaft for your driver. I know I had the same problem when I was playing a cheap Top Flite driver. The shaft was a regular flex, and with my swing speed (100-110 mph) I needed a stiff flex.

Flattening my driver swing has worked wonders for me. It produces a nice straight ball or at worse a little fade. My sliced driver is usually due to a looping out to in swing.

Longer shaft so your your swing flaws are accentuated.

heres your answer

And....larger clubhead, so it's more difficult to square the club face. Bottom line is you likely have an over the top type of swing. Slices are almost always a tell tale sign of an OT swing.

I believe shaft has a major influence but a too stiff shaft may easily produce a slice as well. This happens when the swing speed (and especially deceleration of hands before impact) is not sufficient and the kick of the shaft takes place too late leaving the face open at the time of impact. I had that problem some years ago when my swing speed had been slightly reduced. Changed my driver to a more flex shaft and problem solved.

I would agree with some others proposing a swing flaw, this is propably the biggest reason, you're swinging out-in.

I played till July Pink G10, Regular Shaft, 10.5 degrees. Shots regular straight but high ball flight with small or no roll. No slice. Then i bought Ping G15 regular shaft, 9 degrees. The ball flight became lower but i started to slice! Slice is normally no problem with me.
I tried several changes is swing path, grip etc. Result: Still slice. Then i realised, that the Ping G15 is also sold in a draw version. I waited for a month to my G15 regular shaft 9% with draw. This configuration seems not to be asked from golfers.... Ping expects all golfs that play 9 degrees to play a STIFF shaft? When the new driver arrived i was really interested to see what happens. Result: Straight lower longer drives (av. 250 yards). Conclusion for me: a draw driver with low degrees can avoid the slice tendency that occurs with lower degrees!

What happens if you grip down like an inch? Still slice? I've been slicing for the past 2-3 weeks (like you, only driver), something that has never been a problem for me (it's usually a hook). I have to take a slightly stronger grip (left hand more clockwise) to fix it so I'm assuming my grip with the driver is too weak for that club and it doesn't mesh well with my swing path, obviously.

  • 2 weeks later...
Very low loft = not much backspin = side spin dominates. With the same swing, you can slice your driver in your sleep, yet work all day with your 9-iron and still not do it because the tremendous backspin that the 9 imparts on the ball swamps the sidespin your swing creates.

That's the good thing about a driver. Swing flaws that other clubs hide announce themselves.

Lot to be said for this, I used to slice my driver and woods but not irons, switched to stiff shafts in my driver and woods and no more slice

    • Makes sense.  Like I said, I wouldn't have been upset at their original offer either, and based on the fine print it seems like they've held up their end of the deal.
    • If you've only had to adjust retroactively one time in 8 years and have around 5 people each year without handicaps, that's like 40-50 people total so it sounds like you're doing a pretty good job. I think your questions give enough to go off of. This might be a good way to get new people to actually post a few scores during the 6 weeks leading into the first event. Something like "New members will be eligible for tournament money once they have at least 3 posted rounds in GHIN" or something like that. If they can get 3 rounds in prior to their first event, then they're eligible. If not, they'll soon become eligible after an event or two assuming they play a little bit outside of events.
    • This is a loooooong winded narrative so if you don't like long stories, move on. 😉 Our senior club typically gets about 25 new members each year. We lose about 25 members each year for various reasons (moved to FL/AZ, disabled, dead, too expensive). Of the new members, usually 20 have an active GHIN handicap. About 5 each year do not have a GHIN handicap. When they join our club, we give each member a state association membership that includes GHIN handicapping services. We play a series of handicapped tournaments over the summer. When we sign up a new member who does not have a GHIN handicap, we attempt to give them an estimated index until they have sufficient scores posted to have an actual GHIN index.  Our first event typically is around May 15 so, in theory, a new member has about 6 weeks to post a few scores. Posting season in the Mitten starts April 1. Inevitably, several of the unhandicapped individuals seem  to either not play until the first tournament or can't figure out how to enter scores (hey, they are seniors). That situation then leads to my contacting the new member and asking a series of questions: a. Did you ever have a GHIN handicap? If yes, which State and do you recall what it was? b. Do you have an alternate handicap through a non-GHIN handicap service or a league? c. What do you think your average score was last year (for 9 or 18) d. What was your best score last year? Where did you play and which tee was used? e. What do you consider a very good score for yourself? Based on their responses I attempt to give them an index that makes them competitive in the first couple events BUT does not allow them to win their flight in the first couple events. We don't want the new members to finish last and at the same time, we don't want someone with a "20" playing handicap to win the third flight with a net 57. In the event some new member did shoot a net 57, we also advise everyone that we can and will adjust handicaps retroactively when it is clear to us that a member's handicap does not accurately reflect their potential. We don't like to adjust things retroactively and in the 8 years I have chaired the Handicap Committee, we have only done it once. So here are the questions to the mob: Any ideas how to do this better? Any questions one might ask an unhandicapped individual to better estimate their index/handicap? Would it be reasonable to have a new player play once (or more?) without being eligible to place in the money?
