Why should the Tour Championship be considered a 6th unofficial major?

WGC events have deeper fields than the Tour Championship.

Before it went to the current format, I think there was an argument that winning the FedEx Cup could be close to a major. In terms of difficultly and achievement, arguably, because you have to play well all year and then peak in a couple of events at the end.

But, just winning the Tour Championship is not close to a major. WGCs are definitely tougher, as are a handful of regular PGA Tour events (maybe a few European Tour events, too).

Here are the rest of the strokes gained top 10. Just remember Tiger had 5 other years which would have a good chance at making the grade.

Strokes Gained Total 2004-’19
1)+3.82 - Tiger Woods, 2008 (only 6 events)

1)+3.30 - Tiger Woods, 2006

2)+3.19 - Tiger Woods, 2009

3)+3.09 - Tiger Woods, 2007

4)+2.55 - Rory McIlroy, 2019

5)+2.50 - Jim Furyk, 2006

6)+2.41 - Rory McIlroy, 2012

7)+2.40 - Tiger Woods, 2005

8)+2.38 - Tiger Woods, 2004

9)+2.37 - Dustin Johnson, 2018

10)+2.31 - Tiger Woods, 2012

There's another stat that goes back a bit further and is very similar, but not quite the same as strokes gained. Tiger absolutely dominates.

PGA Tour Strokes Differential Field Average '83-'19
1) 3.84 strokes – Tiger Woods, 2000

2) 3.39 strokes – Tiger Woods, 2006

3) 3.21 strokes – Tiger Woods, 2007

4) 3.04 strokes – Tiger Woods, 2009

5) 3.03 strokes – Tiger Woods, 2002

6) 2.98 strokes – Tiger Woods, 1999

7) 2.82 strokes – Tiger Woods, 2003

😎 2.67 strokes –  Tiger Woods, 2005

9) 2.59 strokes – Greg Norman, 1993

10) 2.56 strokes – Vijay Singh, 2003

Yeah, I think Rory is worth $150m.  $15m is 10% of his worth, but the career slam definitely means more.

I wonder if Rory would have rather had won The Masters or the $15,000,000?

Hands down the Masters.  Sadly, for him an extra 15 million dollars doesn't really affect him.  He is only really interested in winning more majors and creating his legacy.

What's in the bag

  • Taylor Made r5 dual Draw 9.5* (stiff)
  • Cobra Baffler 4H (stiff)
  • Taylor Made RAC OS 6-9,P,S (regular)

Funny how the "Rory McIlroy is Overrated!" topic has become the Rory Catch-All Topic. And that he's one of the best players to have emerged the last 10 years.

I think it would more appropriate to say that Rory hasn't lived up to his potential at all.  After 2014, I thought he would dominate.  For a top rated player, I have never seen anyone worse at hitting shots from 100 yards out.  He's absolutely horrible at that shot and is the most frustrating player to watch, because he constantly throws shots away.  He does it on the putting green as well. He'll have a 15 foot putt and hit it 6 feet past the hole.

Rory should have 3 more majors by now.  At a minimum.

Golf is hard, and staying at the top of the game for longer periods is hard.

Rory obviously has a great talent, but is very up and down in his performance. Can be frustrating to a big fan, but it's also interesting since you never know what you'll get.

Everybody has their Achilles heel! Rory's used to be that and his putting. He has seemed to get his putting straightened out. What happens if he does the same with his short game?

Rory seems to be the most unaffected and personable of superstars. A bright and thoughtful fellow.  Hard to not get behind him. Terribly exciting when firing on all cylinders.

A very popular victory indeed.

You guys are tough. Rory is 30 years old, has 17 PGA wins,13 European Tour wins and has 4 Majors! That's HOF stuff at 30 and you KNOW he's going to add to those totals. Say what you want about being over rated, but I'd call out Ricky Fowler (30 years old, 5 wins and 0 majors) and Michele Wie (29 years old 5 wins with 1 major). as the most over rated in recent memory.

I read this as “Rory should have 3 majors by now” and was ready to give you a sarcastic response about how he’s a masters win away from a grand slam....

You mean when you could skip events in the final series and still win it?

    • @boogielicious and I are definitely in for the Stay & Play and will need the extra night's stay on Friday. I don't know what the plans are for our group on Friday but even if we don't make it for dinner with the rest of the Friday arrivals, I'll be more than happy to meet up somewhere for a beer or something.
    • Taking your dispersion and distance in consideration I analyzed the 4 posible ways to play the hole, or at least the ones that were listed here. I took the brown grass on the left as fescue were you need to punch out sideways to the fairway and rigth of the car path to be fescue too.  Driver "going for the green"  You have to aim more rigth, to the bunker in order to center your shotzone in between the fescue.  Wood of 240 over the bunkers I already like this one more for you. More room to land between the fescue. Balls in the fescue 11% down from 30% with driver. Improve of score from 4.55 to 4.40. 4 iron 210 yards besides the bunkers.    Also a wide area and your shot zone is better than previous ones. This makes almost the fescue dissapear. You really need to hit a bad one (sometimes shit happens). Because of that and only having 120 yards in this is the best choice so far. Down to 4.32 from 4.40. Finally the 6 Iron 180 yards to avoid all trouble.    Wide area an narrow dispersion for almost been in the fairway all the time. Similar than the previous one but 25 yards farther for the hole to avoid been in the bunkers. Average remains the same, 4.33 to 4.32.  Conclusion is easy. Either your 4iron or 6 iron of the tee are equaly good for you. Glad that you made par!
    • Wish I could have spent 5 minutes in the middle of the morning round to hit some balls at the range. Just did much more of right side through with keeping the shoulders feeling level (not dipping), and I was flushing them. Lol. Maybe too much focus on hands stuff while playing.
    • Last year I made an excel that can easily measure with my own SG data the average score for each club of the tee. Even the difference in score if you aim more left or right with the same club. I like it because it can be tweaked to account for different kind of rough, trees, hazards, greens etc.     As an example, On Par 5's that you have fescue on both sides were you can count them as a water hazard (penalty or punch out sideways), unless 3 wood or hybrid lands in a wider area between the fescue you should always hit driver. With a shorter club you are going to hit a couple less balls in the fescue than driver but you are not going to offset the fact that 100% of the shots are going to be played 30 or more yards longer. Here is a 560 par 5. Driver distance 280 yards total, 3 wood 250, hybrid 220. Distance between fescue is 30 yards (pretty tight). Dispersion for Driver is 62 yards. 56 for 3 wood and 49 for hybrid. Aiming of course at the middle of the fairway (20 yards wide) with driver you are going to hit 34% of balls on the fescue (17% left/17% right). 48% to the fairway and the rest to the rough.  The average score is going to be around 5.14. Looking at the result with 3 wood and hybrid you are going to hit less balls in the fescue but because of having longer 2nd shots you are going to score slightly worst. 5.17 and 5.25 respectively.    Things changes when the fescue is taller and you are probably going to loose the ball so changing the penalty of hitting there playing a 3 wood or hybrid gives a better score in the hole.  Off course 30 yards between penalty hazards is way to small. You normally have 60 or more, in that cases the score is going to be more close to 5 and been the Driver the weapon of choice.  The point is to see that no matter how tight the hole is, depending on the hole sometimes Driver is the play and sometimes 6 irons is the play. Is easy to see that on easy holes, but holes like this:  you need to crunch the numbers to find the best strategy.
