Rory McIlroy Topic (Was "Overrated")

Because I didn't respond to a message in the middle of the night? Not everyone is glued to a computer, you know. What is the point you are trying to make? Are you offended because I think that McIlroy is not going to be concerned about missing a cut, whilst you think he he has been humbled? My understanding of the swing thread concept is that people create swing threads because they seek feedback from some of the instructors on the site. A quick search will show that I have not done this. I come here to discuss golf, not to have my swing analysed. Don't pretend you are asking something innocently when you'e not. You can use the search function. One thing I cannot abide is disingenuousness and insincerity.

Wow. Ok friend, I was only asking where your swing thread was. Wanted to see it. Not sure why you're offended? For someone who is mean spirited, posted over 4000 times and declares he's a 2 handicap..... I think I understand now. You're one of "those guys" It's ok, but you you could be a bit friendlier for an "internet scratch golfer". Can you say "block button"?

You're digging yourself a pretty deep hole and just making yourself look bad. I'd suggest you stop digging...

Yours in earnest, Jason.

Guys, keep the thread on topic or you'll end up being restricted.

First of all, I think mr. E. Jones has the coolest Avatar of all.

Secondly, I have no clue if RM is overrated. I just wonder how long is back will hold with such a powerfull swing. Sometimes I feel he puts a lot of strain on his back. Time will tell.

By no means am I saying that he isn't good, cause he's great. He's just not that great. I think Rory will be the next Lee Westwood, albeit with a prettier swing.

Does Lee Westwood have any majors? Didn't Rory win two just last year and is one away from the career slam? Thought I read something about that.

I enjoy watching McIlRoy - think he's representing very well as the world's number one.  It seems like just yesterday that I saw him for the first time at the 2008 BMW at Munich practicing on a Saturday morning with the other Euro pros......only McIlRoy didn't make the cut, but he was out there practicing when he could have been elsewhere. I saw that curly headed teenager and thought who the heck is he?

T106th, Missed cut.

Funny how he's #1 but this is the only thread about him while TW has probably 5-10 threads and he's played 14 holes this season....time to move on, imo.

I know a lot of you think/wish/hope he'll be the second coming, but I'm not buying that product. He hasn't shown me that fire you need to be a multiple major winner. I say he finishes his career with 2, maybe 3 majors and 10-15 tournament wins. I reckon he'll be a hall of famer, but never classed with the likes of tiger, jack, palmer, player, etc. thoughts...?

The post to which you responded was posted in 2010. Yeah, the guy was wrong.

I made the mistake as well. Didn't realize we were working off a nearly 5-yr old thread. Probably needs to be locked and a new one started with a title of "World's Number One" or something like that.

  • 1 month later...

In the past 75 years, only Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods have amassed 10 wins on the PGA Tour by age 26. Now Rory joins that list.

Well,  Rory is not the next Tiger Woods.

He is not consistently the greatest, and isn't the putter that Tiger was...

He is Rory.

Pretty darn great with some humility.

The biggest difference between Tiger and Rory is consistency. Talent-wise, they're pretty even. I may even take Rory over Tiger when you put both players A-games side-by-side. If you put last year's Rory at Augusta in 1997, I think Rory tops 20-under. But Tiger just showed up more often week to week and major to major. That's where the two separate and why Tiger will have the edge on him...at least for now. Things can change.

Rory McIlroy is the #1 ranked player in the world and the only way anybody could think that he is overrated is if they don't think he is the #1 player in the world. I'm hard pressed to think who might be better right now. Spieth is the only name that comes to mind, but I don't think he is there yet.

Rory is a huge driver of the ball I find. He playes long iron shots great too. his overall game is good too. nothing is wrong.

I find him less spectacular than otthers,, often going middle of green and waiting for putts to fall like in the US open final round he won 2-3 years ago.

anyway I'm not sure tiger was as precise before 26.

I know. He was completely wrong hence the backfire.

Too bad he hasn't posted since December of 2012.

    • I was laid off two months ago. Good severance, a 90 day layoff announcement regulation the company wanted to avoid so technically I'm still on the payroll for a few weeks, and a bunch of banked PTO, so I'm in a great spot and working on a startup idea I've been batting around with my brother for a while. That means I've got time to get to the gym! I'm at like 60-75 minutes 5x a week of strength training, and either a run or a bunch of time playing soccer or tennis with my daughter on the weekends. Stronger than I've been in forever. Up ~5 pounds of (noticeable!) muscle!
    • Do you have examples of exceptional scores versus their established handicap indexes?

    • A bit of background. The Southern California Golf Association (SCGA) runs an annual event known as "Team Play." It is a wildly popular match play competition where Men's Clubs across the region put together teams of 20+ golfers together to compete against other clubs in a 16 vs. 16 match. In any given year, approximately 80-100 clubs will participate. Each club is grouped into "pods" of 4, and will play 6 total matches - one home and one away match against the other 3 clubs. The winning club from each pod advances to the Team Play Playoffs - a single elimination format - until a winner is crowned.  Antelope Valley Country Club just advanced to the championship match for the 3rd consecutive year. They won the championship in both 2022 and 2023.  Based on my review of the match history from the past 3 years (linked below), they have won 21 consecutive team matches. Keep in mind, these are handicapped matches, so this is not just a case where a group of sticks bands together to dominate the poor amateurs other SoCal clubs. Even if these guys are grinders who never quit, play their best under pressure and routinely putt the lights out, the law of averages still say that a streak of that nature is mathematically impossible.  Is there any plausible explanation beyond institutionalized sandbagging throughout the club?
