If you count the clubs in my signature, ive only got 12 and I could probably do without the 3 wood as I seldom hit it, so my full set could consist of 11 clubs. The 56 deg sand wedge gets primarily used just for that, the sand. But i use most of the rest of the clubs at least once per round. The 9 iron seems to get neglected a lot as sometimes ill hit an easy 8 iron because I would rather hit the 8. Other than the putter, the PW is probably the most used club as it gets the lions share of chipping and pitch shots. The 6 iron seldom gets used for full shots, its many times the punch-it-under-the-tree-onto-the-green club or the whack-it-back-out-into-the-fairway club when im wild off the tee with my driver. The 5 hybrid gets used a lot too on approach shots and par 3's, anything from about 150-170 yards.

You can hit any iron out of a bunker, dude...and hit it pretty well with practice. Not something I'd recommend without practicing first, though. You don't ever hit bunker shots with anything besides a sand iron?

I love the long running pitch out of a bunker with a 9-iron. I started the game (for real - I'd played pasture golf at home for a summer with my brother and a used set of Spalding Tru Flites) with a guy who used Powerbilt Citation blades and his highest lofted iron was a 9. He was like Seve with that thing. My brother still doesn't use a sand wedge and I've never seen him blade a ball over the green OR leave one in the sand - and here I am with 3 specialized wedges thinking I know how to golf.

Greenside bunker I almost always use a sand wedge unless the pin is on the other side of a large green. Can't imagine playing with only those 3 clubs and being able to record a "good score" relative to your usual.

Not saying you'll ever play a 3-club round, but I'd suggest 3 different clubs.

In your case, maybe 4-wood, SW, and putter. If you can you putt with a bladed wedge, add a mid-iron instead of the putter. Also, with no wedge, course management comes into play more. Don't fire at that those sucker pins. Play for a runup shot between the bunkers or layup for a comfortable full shot to the middle of the green. Don't hit into pot bunkers or short side yourself - good advice even with a full set.

DING DING DING, d golf pro i am takin lesson from told me when he played in high school that why his coach would make them play a 3 club round every so often, so that they would have better course management, and it also allowed them to work on certain shots, in actual oncourse situation

Probably how I'd play a 3 club round... 3w, 7i, 56... possibly would put in my 3h instead of the 3w...

I like the idea of using only X amount of clubs for a round and just force myself to make different shots. I have tried this before for fun but with my full set. Sometimes if I was playing well I would talk myself out of hitting the "practice" shot that I normally wouldnt play. Doing this forces you to play that shot though so Im going to have to try it.

Yeah we actually do play limited club matches from time to time. Usually when we go out the back for free. Everyone either blades a wedge or uses the 3 wood or hybrid to putt. We play aggressive since par usually wins the hole. Even had a friend hole out for eagle in a 3 club match. Just think that wedge is required when a "good score" is what you are seeking.

Yesterday I made a birdie at a short Par 5 (495 yds.) during a 3+ tournament (3 clubs + putter), at this hole I had a really good drive and a 5 iron ..... 7 ft. from the hole, just missed the eagle ...... My yesterday's set: Driver/5i/9i+Putter and had a nett 76 (only 4 above my hc)...... I wonder why on earth we need 14 clubs .... shooting 82 with only 3 clubs .....
