I'm just looking for some average yardages to get a feel for if I need a 5 wood.      I've resigned myself to take the 3 wood out of the bag for now as I just don't have any confidence with it off the fairway.       I hit my 19° hybrid pretty decently, but recall in an earlier post, alot of guys like their 5 woods.    For an average player, how much longer would a 5 wood be than a 19° hybrid ?      Also, I'm unsure about the application of either, meaning where would you prefer to use a 5 wood vs. a 3 hybrid rescue club ?   THANKS !

For me, they were very close.  I hit my Adam A4 3H around 190 carry.  My R7 5W, which I don't carry anymore, was about 190.  Off the fairway, the 3H was higher flight.  Off the tee, the 5W was higher.

I had such a bad time hitting my 3 Wood this past season, that I will be trying some new things next season.  I picked up a Nike SQ 2 4 Wood (17*) that I will be trying out, and while I am not expecting miracles, I do expect to see improvement.  And by going with the 4 Wood, I can eliminate both the 3 Wood and the 5 Wood, and go straight to a 20-21* 7 Wood or 3 Hybrid (I have a Nike SQ 2 7 Wood, Nickent 3dx RC 3 Hybrid, and Wilson Staff 3 Fybrid).

I can carry my 5 wood much farther than any hybrid of the same loft.  I had a callaway x hybrid 3 and could carry it at most 195.  My old five wood I could fly it 220.  They were also very different shafts (steel verse graphite).  Persoanlly I like high lofted woods more as they fly higher and stop quicker.  But maybe it was just a bad fit for me (the one I had).

I used a 5w for quite a while, and compared to my 19* hybrid, it carried 10~15 yds further, but it was much more difficult to hit off the turf than the hybrid, so in the end I went with the versatile 3 hybrid. Some days I will drop my gap/lob wedge and toss the 5 wood in the bag for the hell of it, though. I enjoy using it off the tee.

5W tends to go farther, as it has a longer shaft than comparable hybrids.

depends what you want it to do

i have mine (hybrid 18º) cut 1/2" longer than a 3i would be, has a steel shaft in it and same grip as my irons

i wanted to to perform and feel like a long iron than a fwy metal

i too gamed a 5w but wasnt too big of fan of it

in your case dropping a 3w, i would try a 4w maybe

little less loft than a 5, more than a 3 and cut it to 43 or 42" to get some distance out of it

I was going to suggest the same thing. If you are considering adding a 5 wood, then a 4 wood would be a great club as it will give you a smaller gap between the driver and 3 hybrid. The shaft might be a touch longer than in a 5 wood but you still have enough loft to get it airborne off the deck while getting a bit of extra distance off the tee.

What's the problem with your current 3 wood?

For me, 5 wood goes about 195 yards.   3 Hybrid goes 180 yards.

I used to hit hybrids a lot but now I use 5 Wood because it's more dependable.

    • I have a putting mat in my office. It's 9 feet long almost 4 feet wide. I've drawn a line down it in order to practice hitting my line and stuff. Works fine for what it is.  While I'm not a fan of lining up a line on my golfball for every putt. I think for practice sessions it can have a lot of value.  To me this product makes sense. This is the first time I've seen it. It showed up as an add on the right side of the TST webpage. What do you all think? PuttAIM Laser Training Aid Get ready to dominate the greens like never before. • Of course. I've used different words to start, but like 90-95% of the time it's been this one. And I'm unlikely to switch now.

    • Angle is not a factor. I hit the ball 100’ high. Par is net birdie. My CH is 16. The rough between the bunkers is like 10’ wide though. That’s not something you’re going to try to hit on purpose. Most of the area to the left of that is fescue/native vegetation and I’m pretty sure there isn’t a flat lie in any of it. It’s the second hole.
