  1. 1. Do you hit off the grass or mats when you go to the range?

    • Always off the GRASS - I want realistic conditions

    • Always off the GRASS - This is all my range offers

    • Always off the MATS - It's cheaper

    • Always off the MATS - I like the feel of the mat

    • Always off the MATS - I don't want to clean my clubs when i'm done

    • Always off the MATS - This is all my range offers

    • I switch it up but mostly off the GRASS

    • I switch it up and it's 50/50

    • I switch it up but mostly off the MATS

    • It doesn't mater to me at all. I have no preference

From these posts I think we are quite lucky here in S Africa to have nice practice facilities for very very cheap and that we can play and practice all year round. I go to one of these (pic) and it costs about $35 a month for membership for unlimited play and balls, you can spend 300 hours a month there and it would still only cost you the $35. I dont mind mats at all btw, it has many advantages. However I hope to get a membership at a course with a nice grass driving range soon. We have a course here called the Els Club which is fantastic (had a european tour event there couple years ago), with an insane grass driving range. As per latest enquiry it was about $2000 a year for the super duper all you can get membership which includes membership fees, unlimited golf, free carts as well as free range access. The range is so good that I am considering it as it is not always easy to find a good grass range.

Come on Rolopolo.  Is that layout real, now and today, or only hypothetical, based on Ernie's, and Gary's, hopes and dreams?  Seems too good to be true.  Any cheap motels nearby?

yeh mate its very real lol. http://worldofgolf.co.za/facilities These are called Golf Villages, its a chain of driving ranges. This is probably the nicest one though. The course I was talking about is something different though, not to be confused with the driving range. We are getting more and more foreigners, especially asian girls coming to do high school here in SA so that they can practice here and play for cheap all year round. One of the perks of living in Africa I suppose :/

I actually have something similar to your deal here in California through Golfzing. (American Golf). It is $40 per month. Not unlimited range balls but up to 2 large buckets a day. Plus free lessons. It is so popular at my local course they can't keep up with the demand.

I use old Taylor Made clubs from eBay and golf shops.

    • I kind of like this interpretation especially if you think about it the unplayable rule would probably put you in a better spot.  using back on the line releief.
    • I did not realize that, I was thinking a more traditional golf club.
    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
