Otherwise let's talk about high quality/expensive putters in general, as the OP asked.

Since you're talking about expensive putters, I'm assuming you're talking of milled putters. The feel of a putter is 50% design, 50% materials. Better feeling putters are well designed and made of high quality materials... Although, I'm using a Snake Eyes putter, and I like it more than the two Scotty Camerons I had before...

I sometimes come across a putter than is old and cheap, but feels great to me.  Sometimes I come across a 200-300 dollar putter that also feels great.  I think it's perfectly fine to spend a couple hundred on a putter if you're not taking anything away from your family.

I would agree, it's worth it if you think it is.  You don't have to have a $300 putter to be a good putter, personally I have several high end milled putters and find they fit my putting very well.  But I have and still use some more basic putters like a Wilson 8802 and a nickel Ping Anser and putt fine with them.

IMHO, putting is such an individual activity and really no right or wrong way to make it happen.  If you can roll the ball in the hole, that's all that matters, everyone has a different and unique way of making it happen.  Confidence is everything and if a $300 or $30 putter is what you have confidence in so be it.

I think it is worth getting a putter that feels good and suits your eye, no matter the cost.

For me that was a SC Squareback. My putts per round average went down by 3 just by being more comfortable over the ball.

That is golf porn.  And if the facts about their technology is true then they sound awesome, expensive (to me), but awesome.

Couldn't get both quotes to post, sorry.

I do think however that this does go the the original question about expensive putters in general.  Was Scotty the first $300-350 putter?  I don't think they are anymore "over rated" than any other, but I do think the rage over Scotty's has influenced the market in general and the ability of other manufacturers to market $300+ putters.  Secondly, the use by many high profile players, some of which are compensated, along with high dollar advertising are indirect costs that must be covered.  So the "hype" is a factor that helps sells the putters and allows other makes to tag along on the "hype" of high dollar putters in general.  So many of them almost copy the stampings of the Scotty's.

I am not bashing Scottys. I have tried a few in stores and like the feel.  I may even bite the bullet and buy one.  I am considering buying a used one I like and sending to the custom shop for restoration and customization.  At the end of the day, the Newports as an example are a very well made, quality materials, semi-custom Ping Anser. Of course for a similar price range, you can get truly custom one-offs from other makers.

So are they worth it? Well thousands or millions of golfers think so because they part with their money for one.  Whether it is worth it to an individual is something only that individual can answer.

Ive had this discussion with golf buds alot. I spent a few hundred bucks on a set of clubs 2yrs ago when I picked the game back up, but was using an old putter I had from years ago. Since then Ive bought a new driver, cost me about $150. Spent about $100 on a couple of hybrid clubs. Just a few weeks ago I bought a new set of TM Burner irons, cost me about $340. Bought a new golf bag for $100 this year. But Im still using that putter I bought at Play It Again Sports back in the mid-90s for $10.

Its a Dunlop, made of pewter (I believe), no insert, about as basic as you can get. I dont think any putter in the world, no matter what it cost, is going to make me putt better than I do with that one. Im not saying Im a great putter by any means, but sticking a $200 putter in my hand isnt going to make me instantly better. Almost everyone I play with uses Odyssey and I dont think I putt any better or worse (ok sometimes worse) than they do during any given round.

What Snake Eyes putter are you using?  I used a Tour Platinum for a period of time last year and kind of regret getting rid of it.  It rolled the ball differently than any putter I've tried.  It was almost like the ball stuck to the ground as it was rolling....

My personal opinion is that if you spend a good amount of money on a putter(s), you will practice more and take putting more seriously because of the investment involved.

Just basically asking everyone if they think an expensive putter and or putter technology is worth it, or is it just the person an there abilities that make them a good putter and not the actual putter itself. That said I understand that many putters and putter companies have there own sight alignment systems and I understand those are important, but I am basically asking about the materials used and so on not alignment tools.

Yes. I spent $400 on my OdysseyProType82. And it is the best putter I have ever owned

It will take my putting game to a whole new level

No it won't.  And it's a gorgeous putter.  But it won't take your putting game anywhere.

I think he's just observing that only you can take your putting game to the next level. Maybe the fancy putter will help, maybe not, but it sure as heck won't hole any out on its own.

Geez.

I took his comment that in all reality it's just a finely crafted $300 hunk of metal at the end of a long piece of metal.  It's not going to do jackshit for your putting.  It can't it's an inanimate object. There is not some magic golf pants fairy living in the putter that will use his dragon turd core wand to will your balls to the hole.

You have to put in the work to do better. If having to pay $300 for a putter is what it takes to inspire you to practice and get better then so be it.

Apparently I do.  Nice job being defensive.  I didn't say you overpaid for your putter, that it was a waste of money, or that it can't perform well.  It's great that you love Phil Mickelson, it really is.  I should have confessed that you'll be putting just like him in no time, due largely to the putter you are using...

I have one of those... the Edel Vari-Loft, and haven't looked at another putter since its delivery over two years ago.
