Good Iron Sets for Mid-Handicapper

Im am 16 years old and am curently playing off of 11.9. My irons that i am using right now are Callaway x18. I am looking in the market for some new irons.

The irons that caught my eye were the Titelist AP1 710 irons.

would those irons be good, the reason i like them is because of the cavity back and the look. My brother has Titelist irons, and i like them so i thought that the feel of his titelist irons would have the same feel with the AP1s.

Please give me some examples of good iron sets for a mid-handicapper like myself.

Sounds like you appreciate the look and feel of cavity back irons.  The AP1s and AP2s would be good choices to try.

My belief is that you should play the most forgiving clubs with the look and feel that meet your preference.  I see far too many people playing golf with clubs that aren't forgiving enough for them.

Try some of the following clubs at your local golf shop.

Yeah i have always played  cavity back irons. and dont intent to switch to a muscle back or anything else for a little while.

i do like hybrids, i play a 3 hybrid and 4 hybrid.

those options seem to be good. but titelist or taylormade are my preferred irons right now. Callaway just isnt cutting it for me.

So any options of Titelist or Taylormade cavity back irons would be good, for me.

If you are looking for Titleiest or Taylormade, that kind of limits you to AP1's, AP2's, Burner 2.0, and R9/R9 TP's. If possible, just see if you can demo as many as those four as possible and see what fits your game.

Coming from a hockey player and golfer like you I would reccomend the AP1's or either of those Taylor Mades.  The AP2's might not be quite forgiving enough.  The R9 irons do have a pretty big face, which would give a hockey player a comfortable feel.

I agree with you there, I just posted the AP2's because they are pretty similar to the R9 TP's. It would be a really big change going from X18's to either of those clubs, but I don't think it will hurt to leave them out of the equation.

Most X18 iron sets had the Uniflex shaft, which is OK for a quite a few golfers, but not ideal for very many.

Before you write off Callaway, you might consider the X20 Tour model, available from Callaway Preowned.

Has an MPF rating of 716, in the SGI category (Maltby's six category system). Many sets were shafted with Project X Rifle Flighted. The flighted shafts give a little extra lift to the longer irons, and keep the short irons from ballooning too much. Compared to the stock X18 and X20 sets, the X20 Tours have less offset, and smaller heads which get through the rough better.

The X22 Tours have an MPF = 594, in the GI range. In comparison, not as easy to hit as X20T.

Or, you may be able to find used X20 Tours in local golf shop. If you get them in Project X, be aware that the PX family runs a little stiffer than comparable Dynamic Gold shafts.

If you're set on Titleist, so be it. But, I thought I would mention the X20 Tours.

the x20 a demoed and they seemed to have a good thin top line which i like. so i will look into that
