Ì thought Tiger did look a lot like his former self and played a cracking round. Alas, I'm not a huge fan of him. But he is a fantastic golfer.

I'm rooting for Mcilroy to follow through and keep playing the way he is. That kid has one hell of a great swing. And Day had a floorless round too. Very happy they're playing together. I think if Mcliroy was playing with Woods it would be a very different story.

The difference is that this is Augusta, the constant venue for a major. I cannot recall any of the greats with a defeatist attitude toward something that's gonna be there year after year. I'm sure he'll change his mind but this was disappointing.

Is Lee Trevino is considered one of the greats and he had no love for Augusta National. He finished in the top 10 a couple times, but it was the one major he really had no shot at winning.

Did Rory say that?  I heard about Poulter predicting Tiger wouldn't do well, but I don't remember Rory shooting his mouth off about this.

Well, GMac was wearing them too, so I don't think it has to do with that.

I'm interested in seeing how Tiger manage his tee shots today. He hit some wild ones yesterday that he got away with big time. With a bit of bad luck he's behind a tree or something worse. I think his tee shots and misses will determine where he ends up this week. His iron play, short game and putting is good enough to win it, but he has to avoid making mistakes.

It would be easy to think he has a poor competitive spirit based on that, but I truly believe he has the kind of grit to win multiple majors before his career is over.

Graeme appeared really unhappy during his final holes on Friday, his head down while waiting on the teebox, muttering.   The guy shouldn't be too hard on himself for what he's accomplished.   But I agree that grit is probably what will drive him to do better next time.

So for Tiger today will his performance off the tee be the biggest deciding factor?  I couldn't tell from the Masters.com site how many fairways Tiger hit yesterday.

His irons seem well dialed in and his biggest advantage compared to the youngsters, but his putting performance was a little mixed, though as others have said the greens are challenging.

Based on older stats from the PGA Tour website both Day and Mcilroy drive an average 10 yards further than Tiger, and Day has been up to 10% more accurate on hitting the fairways.  But Tiger has the advantage in GIR.  Choi's stats are a little better than Tiger's except for GIR.

I think Day has the best chances to win, unless he makes a big mistake.  Tiger will have to play consistently and capitalize on any openings, and also not make any big mistakes if he wants a shot to win on Sunday.

2011 Goals:
* Improve club-head speed to 90 mph with the driver
* Ensure increased speed does not compromise accuracy
* Prevent overextending on the back-swing (left-arm is bending too much at the top)
* Relax arms initially at address ( too tense)* Play more full rounds (failed from 2010)

that'd be because tiger only hit driver three times yesterday.

It isn't unprecedented.  Lee Trevino did not play the Masters for several years (including theyear he won the US and British Opens) because he said that as a low ball hitter he wasn't suited to the course.  It took Jack's intervention to convince him that a player of his stature had to play the Masters.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

Lots of low numbers already today. Bubba and Edoardo Molinari are both 4-under for the round and tourney through Amen Corner, Snedeker and Garcia both 3-under early and 7-under overall.

Trevino was also very uncomfortable and ill at ease within the blueblood environment of Augusta National. His attitude toward the tournament had as much to do with his lack of results as the course layout.

We're well into the third round by now, and there are 20 players within five shots of the lead. There's a traffic jam at 5-under on the leaderboard.

I just watched Tiger putt 5 and 6.  Oh Tiger!  Leave one on the edge and burn the edge with the next.   Well, it took him until 7 yesterday to start playing like the old Tiger... so I'm optimistic!

He's playing irons that look like them.  How much of that is cosmetic and how much is him deciding to go with GI irons is speculation.

I think CH3 is using JPX irons, and K.J. Choi was using Ping's g-series irons at one point.  There is a move towards game improvement irons and away from blades.

No there isn't. Most pros are smart enough to use clubs that they like and which suit them.

Most pros use irons with perimeter weighting.

This notion of "blades" and "players' irons" only seems to exist on this golf forum.

To the point where we have beginners asking "When should I change to players' irons?", when probably the majority of professionals don't use what posters here grandly describe as "players' irons".

By the same token, irons with perimeter weighting are not all "GI" clubs - a term often used derisively here. :-)

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

I'm not sure what you mean here -- what's the difference between perimeter weighting and a cavity?  Would you consider my MP-57s to have perimeter weighting?

    • Day 126 (18 Apr 24) - Trail arm only drill with the LW…focused on letting the club drop, engaging the bounce and letting the club pop the ball up….wrapped up by repeating drill with both hands on the club…
    • OPPs, I guess I have been doing the drill incorrectly, just ignore this.  But as they say, mistakes are learning opportunities. Let’s hope I can learn from mine.
    • Some thoughts after the 1st 9 holes of the year. The driver was pretty good, nothing crazy. My miss seems to be just a push. The start line is a bit too far right for my taste, but they are drawing back at least. Hitting middle-ish of the face to slightly toe. Part of the right miss is a bit of open face and off the toe slightly.  Irons, some really good strikes, others were not so good. I am feeling a few things, when I am being mindful of the swing I made.  1) Got to get the pause down again, and keep things shorter (as usual). One of the best iron shots was when I tried to mimic Rahm's swing length, lol. I caught a flier and hit an 8-iron like 190 yards into an area of no return for that golf ball. The swing felt great 😉  2) I got to stay taller in transition, feel like I gain tons of space between my hands and my chest. The bad swing is the old swing, bad right elbow, tilt to lower the club. This was too much shallowing, and hitting the ball fat. I just think of it this way, you are bent over, and you can reach the ball at address. So, you can reach the ball at impact by getting your hands down.  3) The final thing is the timing. It might take some time to get some flow into the swing. Timing up hands down and the turn is a bit off. Focusing on the hands down kind of stalls everything for me, at least it feels like my hips do not turn. I end up hitting a decent strike, just feels meh athletically, lol.  Short game was Ok, which means pretty good for not practicing it. Not short, but not round destroying.  Putting, doing much better now that I quickened up my routine. Line up, looking at my target. Glance down at the ball to get into my stance. Glance up at my target spot again, then hit the ball with in like 1-2 seconds after looking back down at the ball. Trying not to get to static over the ball while putting.
    • Oh I'm dumb, I just noticed I did the MyStrategy from the wrong tee box. I don't think it changes anything, though. I'll play it as a three shot hole and I still don't really want to miss right (guy I played with on Sunday never found his ball he hit just over the trees right). I think the trees left are considered part of the environmentally sensitive area because it's part of the drainage area for the course. I actually like this hole a lot. I'll try to remember to take a picture next time. I probably overestimated the wind speed. We had sustained winds of like 12-15mph with gusts up to 25mph. The wind is actually forecast to be WNW on Saturday instead of WSW like was when I played on Sunday so if I play this hole again the wind will be pushing towards that bunker. Similar speeds, though. Wind is always a factor at this course because there's really nothing blocking it. I'm definitely going to have to pay attention to it, especially with the wind. I hit a handful of short iron approaches a lot farther than I thought I would on Sunday. As of right now the only thing I know for sure is I'm starting on Ridge. I don't know if the back 9 will be played on Meadow or Lake.
    • Day 113: 4/18/24 Stack training progress check after finishing my 6th program, and 4th Full Speed Spectrum Training session, which is recommended for my next program.     Gained 1 mph with driver, 195 g, 95g. Maintained with 280 g , and gained 2 with 145 g. Lost 1 mph on both lead and trail arm. Felt like I lost distance in my last round…
