Most definitely.

Just as my own  MP-57s do!  They are cavity back irons. Which generally means perimeter/peripheral weighting.

I also owned MP-60s and some people insisted on calling them "blades", which is ridiculous. The MP-57s are just a little more dug out at the back. The weight taken from the middle is redistributed at the edges and towards the bottom.

Now, what's up with Tiger's distance control today?  It seems he's had a few approaches that were off by a full club.

Yeah, I've heard mine called blades too.  Now, would you consider them players' irons?  I'm usually suggesting these, or clubs similar to them, when people look into players' irons.

I seem to recall these, or at least the MP-60s, were pretty popular with Mizuno's tour staff.  Brian Gay's 5-8 were MP-60 during his big two wins, for instance.

While we're at it, when they showed the footage of K.J. Choi's eagle on 11 (from 2004), it looked like he had a graphite shaft in his iron.  But I think Matt Kuchar is the only one in the field this year using graphite iron shafts.

I hate the term "Players' irons". It is used by people who are poor golfers who want to sound cool and knowledgeable. It makes them appear the opposite, in my view.

I just call them great clubs. :-)
Trevino used them. (MP-60s)

Faldo used them when he had no sponsor and said they were the best irons he ever played.

I wouldn't count Tiger out of it yet by any means. Rory has a big lead, and with big leads comes big pressure, especially in major championships. There are two outcomes for tomorrow: either Rory rises above that pressure, and plays at a level that no one would be capable of catching anyway (as Louis Oosthuizen did at St. Andrews last year), or he will succumb to it, and leave the title to anyone capable of posting a low number. If the latter happens, I'd say that anyone down to the crowd at 5-under has a chance of winning this thing, which is exactly where Tiger sits right now.

I wouldn't count tiger out but Rory has been cool, calm and collected for 3 rounds so I wouldn't count Rory out either. And the kid has some SERIOUS game.

Sorry, but Tiger IS out of it. He's just not putting well enough.   If Rory slips.... I think Angel Cabrera will take home his second Green Jacket. Dude is too cool and calm to make big mistakes. I like Luke Donald as an outside shot, just because his iron play and short game are so good. With Sunday pin locations at a major, he could post a number with an hour or so left in Rory and Angel's round that will put a little more pressure on them. Either way, I'm pulling for Rory.

I just don't get when people say that about Tiger. He has never comeback to win any major EVER when he's been behind after 54 holes.  Not even from 1 stroke, much less 7. So, the logical conclusion is to count him out.

There was a time when he hadn't won one with a 54 hole lead either.

Come to think of it, has Rory ever won one with a 54 hole lead?

Stop being silly. Rory has played in what 8 majors? Tiger's played in 62, won 14 yet never did it when trailing after 54 holes. Where is the logic in saying you can never count him out when he's never done it before? That statement implies he has a proven track record of coming back in majors when trailing after 54 holes when his history is just the opposite. One can certainly hope, wish and pray that he can do it, because miracles do happen and it's remotely possible, anything like that can happen, but his past experiences in these situations clearly indicate it's unklikely.

I wouldn't count Tiger out just because he is Tiger.  But I'm not putting any money on him either.  His putting isn't very consistent yet but if he get hot he could post a pretty low round tomorrow.  My money says Rory will not fold under pressure and anyone that wants to beat him will have to go very low tomorrow.

I'm pretty bummed Day let his score slip like that, I was really pulling for him. Holy effing Mcilroy, though! If he goes wire-to-wire to win this thing...that will be quite the statement. Especially at 21 years of age....

Tomorrow is gonna be a nail biter.

If Rory shoots 70 in the final round, which easily doable, Tiger would have to shoot a 63 to catch him. That party is over.

BTW, on Tiger's drive on 17, the one where he ended up hitting his second while doing a deep knee bend, even I could see that was a beaner swing (the drive). Did he stack and not tilt, or did he tilt and not stack?

I do have to say his second shot on 15 was really something, along with the second on 17. Having to hit spectacular second shots isn't a good sign, though, especially if you have to pull a 63 or thereabouts out of the air.

For some reason, most of Tiger's approaches to the greens were long today.  He hardly ever got the ball hole high.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

I will never count tiger out at the masters. yeah sure, 7 is a big number to make up, but anything is possible on a sunday. I wouldn't mind rory winning. great player. I gotta go for KJ choi though. always a class act on and off the course. I always want to see choi up on the leader board. he is great the first 2 days and then he just tails off the last 2 days. but this year at the masters, he is looking pretty good.

I don't hate my Charl Schwartzel pick in the Masters pool thread.

Otherwise, I'm pulling for Luke Donald.

    • I'd agree that 4w seems like the right play here. I'm not a course designer or anything but that hole looks like it could be so much more fun if everyone played from those front 2 tee boxes that are right outside your shot cone and they cut down most of the trees down that left side of the fairway. That would give risk reward to long hitters who want to try and push it up to that left fairway, allow more players to reach that second fairway, and still allowing it to be perfectly playable for someone who only hits driver like 150yds off the tee.   Yeah it looks like 4iron aimed at that inside edge of the right bunker is the play there, especially if you don't expect a 20mph tailwind again. If it is down wind again, 5iron would be just fine too, it'd still get you inside 150yds for your approach.  Keep in mind tee marker locations too, you measured that one from the back so if those tee markers are moved all the way towards the front of that box then 5 iron is probably best just to be sure that right bunker is never in play.
    • Day 1: worked on my drill for my arms.
    • Hit my tee shot just into the penalty area and barely found it. Swung hard just in case I hit it. It was slightly downhill with a heavy tailwind. I don't actually hit my 9i 170 yards.
    • Right. The difference between being 120 out and 70 out for me (this is the important part) is negligible and not worth putting other risks into play off the tee.   Ok the argument against driver is that my shot cone is comically large. It puts every possible outcome into play. You can't see the green from the tee so there's a good chance I'd have to wait for it to clear which would slow down play. That's the third tee right in the middle of the firing range there. I really don't want to wait just to hit a terrible shot and I especially don't want to injure somebody. Yea I have no problem playing out of the rough short of the bunker if I'm just going to lay up short of the bunker, but I absolutely need to avoid flaring it right into the penalty area if I'm going to be laying up in the first place. As a general strategy I understand where you're coming from. But since we're specifically talking about me (this is a shot I'm going to have to hit on Saturday), I think the cost is fairly marginal. I hit the ball 8' closer on average from 50-100 than I do from 100-150 from the fairway and rough and the green success % difference is 4%. Bunker might as well be a penalty drop. Based on the data,  Here's my SG:A data compared to a 10: I honestly don't know how to use SG for decision making. That's why I was mostly looking at proximity to hole and green success rate for comparison. I mostly use SG as a way to track my progress. All good. Like I said, I appreciate the discussion. It makes me think. If I didn't want to see alternative/opposing viewpoints to my own I just wouldn't post anything. You should post it! In your own swing thread, of course. It's been a fun exercise.
    • Played my first 2024 round at Pierce Lake. Boomed my first drive down #10 fairway, then slowly slipped into mediocrity. 83 (69.6/131). The high point was going 2 of 4 on sand saves. My sand game is pretty marginal but today I must have discovered the secret for a couple hours.
