Cheyenne Woods, Tiger’s niece, wins at ACC championships

There's something familiar about that golfer there at right. Something in the face, the pose, the swing ... nope, can't quite place it.

Kidding, of course; that sterling golfer there is Cheyenne Woods, niece of one Tiger Woods . And while she shares a game and some genes with Woods, she's just done something he hasn't in quite some time: win, and win big.

Woods, a 20-year-old Wake Forest student, won the ACC Women's Golf Championship on Sunday with a closing round of 3-under 68. She played a bogey-free round, and won by ... well, let's let her proud uncle tell the story:

"My niece, Cheyenne, just won the ACC golf title by 7 shots! That's awesome, I'm so proud of her," Tiger Woods tweeted shortly afterward .

Cheyenne Woods is the daughter of Earl Woods Jr. , Tiger's half-brother who remains estranged from Tiger Woods. Cheyenne is currently an amateur, but you have to bet that the LPGA is dancing in the streets at the prospect of getting a Woods of its own, for more than just the occasional tournament , in a few years.

No kidding the LPGA would be drooling over that news. The poor girl will have so much pressure put on her to live up to a lofty last name. Especially when the LPGA is in dier need of an American star to help grow their game.

There is definitely something about good golf in Earl Sr.'s bloodline.  I remember her at the Champions Tour / First Tee event a few years ago, banked an approach off a mound and into the cup.  And now the ACC Championship.  And she's playing for Arnold Palmer's alma mater.

Also, I didn't realize that Earl Jr. and Tiger were estranged.

She's probably glad to be a woman. If she was Tiger's nephew, the pressure would be 10x what it is now. She's probably glad nobody really cares about women's golf. (And that's coming from someone who does care about women's golf.)

I can imagine the interview now...

"Cheyenne, you just played some amazing golf. How do you feel?"

"I won."

"You played 3 under 68. That's got to make you happy right?"

"I'm happy yes."

"So are you going to the range or to get some food?"

"I'm 20 years old, I've just won a tournament and I'm talking to a boring old fart interviewer asking me ridiculous questions. I'm off to celebrate, LOSER!"

I agree some what. However I think is she goes the route of LPGA in the next year or so the pressure will be on her a lot. Just like they did with Wie and she was never able to live up to the hype. The biggest mistake they made with Wie was allowing her to play PGA events at such a young age and unproven. The LPGA desperately needs a "super star" or "Tiger-es" type player and Cheyenne "Cougar" Woods might just be the calling card to the LPGA. I think people care about their league however it will never compete with the PGA but they are in need of a good marketing campaign. The quality of golf that the women play if very very good and a lot of them can bomb it now to. I think it will be interesting to see what happens with the LPGA in the future.

As a fan of the LPGA, I think Woman's Golf can get close to the same level as Woman's Tennis.  When Michelle Wie is done being a full time student at Stanford, hopefully things will be easier for her and we'll see her win more.  She's only 21 and has many years ahead of her.  With Cheyenne, it's way to early to tell but hoepfully she will be a good addition to the tour and there is no doubt that her last name will bring necessary attention to the LPGA.  Mabye the both of them will start clicking at the same time and we will get a Phil & Tiger type of rivalry??  That's bit of a pipe dream but not impossible.
