getting the club "into the slot" , discuss...drills...tips...

hey guys,

ive been reading alot into my divots to tell me why my ball does what it does. ive come to notice that i almost never have that in to out divot that would result in a draw. ive been watching swings of better golfers and discussing in some degree with others about droping the club into the slot in order to come form the inside. i struggled to do it on the course today, and could use some advice and drills to go about learning to do this so it becomes second nature...as always any advice is appreciated, thanks!

What really helps me is the "pumping" drill, where as your bringing the club down, you focus on bringing the hands in first, and keeping the hinge as your butt of the club should come down facing the ball.  So, you'd pump it 3 times then swing through focusing on the hinge.  Another simpler drill I use is to put a tee about a foot after the ball on line with your target, and the point is to not hit the tee but swing to the outside of the tee.

imho, divot reading is a bit like reading tea leaves. when i hit my "straight" shot which has the slightest hint of a draw and i catch it perfectly, the divot always goes left. so, i don't really pay much attention to them.

If you have trouble swinging inside-out, then try a closed stance. That makes it much easier. It can be anywhere from slightly closed to extremely closed. Experiment.

I use to have the same problem, and the best drill I got was from an All-American golfer from Oklahoma State U. Being a righty, put the ball at your left foot then put your right foot directly behind your left foot with about 1-1 1/2 feet gap between them. The goal is to hit it solid while keeping your balance. If done correctly, you will swing inside out and hit a high draw.

Not dropping the hands from a high position can cause swinging over the top, that's right. But it's not the only way, so your problem may not come from lack of dropping the hands. If you have a chance, get your swing on a video, it takes the guesswork out of it. Here is a picture that demonstrate two ways to swing the club. Tiger on the left got a two-plane swing, Charlie a one-plane swing. Charlie's left arm is lined up with his shoulder pitch. The blue lines show where the hands moved on the backswing, red lines show where the hands moved on the downswing. As you can see, Tiger drops the club at the top, almost straight down, before it re-routes and moves more towards the ball. Charlie is already in a position where he can drive the hands in a straight line, no need to drop the club to adjust the plane. Both these swings works, but it's important to know where your hands are and where they should go. If you got the hands high, they need to drop before starting on a flatter plane. If you don't drop the club from the position Tiger is in, you'll most likely come over the top, or perhaps get very vertical swing plane, which also makes things more difficult.
