How much "fashion" can you tolerate on women golfwear?

Alright folks.

What started as a joke brought up a serious question: What would you consider "too much" as far as women golfwear goes?

Here in Japan, for most young women, golf is more something of a "trend" than a sport. And Every round I play, I can see a few young women dressed in what I wouldn't consider suitable for playing golf.

Now, I'm not saying I don't like the eye candy (it certainly brightens my days when I can't seem to stop duffing), but sometimes it's just too bright/pink/flashy/bling. I've posted below some mild examples taken out of a local golf magazine. I'll try to add some more later. What do you think?

Bring on the cute. I've got enough old dudes and broads to look at on the norm. Nothing beats it when one of my Asian members brings up a niece or daughter out to the course to play. I for one like the colors and skirts and crazy shoes and visors. Korean and Japanese golf gear is great!

I love the bright colors and eye catching fashion on women.  Nothing brightens up my day more on a golf course than seeing a nice eye candy!

But then again, it should be pretty obvious from my avatar.

The first picture would be interesting, but I'd think of it as I would a man in white pants:  you should have some amount of game to back up how you're dressed.

The second picture I find fully appropriate.

Also, I obviously need to move to a country where golf is a trend for young (I assume you mean late teens early 20s?) women.

It's kind of funny that not only don't I mind, but I like when women golfers take pride in their outfits even to the extent of being "too fashionable".   And I don't mind a bit if they're dressed to high style but can barely hit a ball.      But if a guy is dressed to that level then he damn well better be a great player or I think he's a buffoonish pretender.     I guess there's a double standard here....

Since the end of World War II, male golfers began coming more and more from across the economic spectrum - working class up through wealthy play golf.

For women, most golfers I see are from upper middle class or better. Hence, more emphasis on and $$ for fashion.

Let's face it, most men only much attention to their wardrobe when they're trying to look good for women.   Women will dress for both men and women.      OK, maybe it's a little bit of sexist generalization, but when was the last time you heard one guy commenting on another guy's wardrobe except maybe to give him some crap?

"Bob, that new shirt just looks great on you and really brings out the color of your eyes!   And those stripes are so slimming, as if your physique actually needed slimming.    Did you get that at Saks?   I'm so looking forward to their summer sale!".

Yeah, right......

I appreciate well dressed people. Male or female. I think it's a form of politeness/courtesy towards your other fellow players.

Ok, perhaps I'm spoiled here, or it just shows I've never played golf outside of Asia…

Let me add that all those girls with eye-catching (for better or worse) golfwear are never worth a damn at actual playing.

Sure, we all have to start somewhere! I'm the first one to admit that and my first round ever was probably not pretty to watch. But I wanted to get better and I wanted not to suck!

Well, here in Japan I've never met a "fashion girl" that actually honestly tries to get the ball forward and tries to keep up. So perhaps I would feel totally ok with that "fashion" if those girls were actually able to play even to 130. Because if I feel the person is struggling but wants to learn the game, I don't care what your clothes are, and I'm going to try to help them.

I guess Shindig hits an interesting point:

you should have some amount of game to back up how you're dressed.

Although I wouldn't go as far as wanting them to play under 100… but last time I played in a clients' company competition, our foursome had one young lady (that had supposedly been playing for about a year) dressed all pink, from driver (with some bling bling inserts on the crown…) to visor, and we stopped counting her score after she reached a 162 on the 12th hole. Was it due to her clothing? no, for sure! but it certainly didn't help making it more bearable to watch… and she didn't act like she was there for GOLF… she was there to show off.

I'm going to the USA this summer, and after coming back, maybe I'll change my mind, who knows :)

Being a child of the 60s and 70s, there is very little anyone can throw on and hit the links with that seem more outlandish to me than some of the crap worn in the late 60s through mid 70s.  You want loud fashion?  Bring up a few old clips of J Miller, Nicklaus, Watson, et al and see how well they 'wore it'.  And then, of course, every MAWG in America then brought those same 'fashions' to your local muny (YIKES!!).  For my eyes, I'd  much rather see the young ladies sportin' the trendy stuff.  Whether or not they can actually play isn't even relevant, IMHO.  If they're going to be out there, why not at least look good?

I don't really understand fashion. But if fashion is synonymous with clothing... Then I agree with the OP, the less fashion the better.

Attractive women can wear anything they want to the course as long as it isnt too bulky and covers too much, show it off if you got it.   Bright colors, wild designs, bring it on, wont have any trouble spotting them for sure just dont be complete hackers and its all good(well if you're hot enough, it doesnt matter if you can play or not).

Hit all four par threes in one (a first) - parred each; still had a couple 3 putt bogies; and blew up on 3 of the par 5’s (go figure)). The blow ups were some serious tree rattlers - amplifying how I got stupid and greedy instead of smart and content to just get back in the short stuff.
