Why do amateur golfers wear brand name logo hats like compensated endorsed pro's?

yeah, I almost bought a titleist hat the other day because the only one I had with me was pretty beat up and nasty.  Then I was at a concert a few night later and I saw somebody wearing a titleist hat and that was what brought up this whole topic.  My friends assumed the reason so many people wear hats these days with golf company logos is they want to look like pros but I thought it was probably a little more complicated than that.

Yes professionally done is fine. But on a stock standard Toyota or Honda??

It seems the people who go out of their way to wear non branded clothing are the only ones who care what people wear.

The rest of us just wear what we like - maybe because we realize it's such a non issue?

I guess what I'm trying to say is...who cares what people wear, we wear it because we like it. Whether it has a logo or it's plain.

Sometimes the club makers give logo hats away at demo day if you test their latest $485 driver. In such a case, you get compensated with a hat for testing the club - you're sponsored just like a pro , although you get less.

If the OP has to buy all his hats, I certainly hope it's not a case of the club makers not wanting him to wear their hats when he plays... (just kidding!)

What is the difference between wearing a Titleist hat when playing golf to wearing an A's hat to a baseball game? If my favorite player is Tiger Woods, wouldn't you expect me to wear a Nike TW hat?

And why do people always feel they need to judge others? I don't understand threads like this: worrying about someone's apparel or wondering why someone would play a full set of one brand. No wonder the layperson thinks golf is full of snobs.

For the record: your team affiliation and corporate golf product preferences are two completely separate things.  If you are playing in new york and you wear a red sox hat..that is a statement made with pride etc...  Same thing here in KC wearing a KU, MU, or KSU hat, especially in enemy territory.  If you wear a Royals hat then you have some serious pride because they suck etc...  Golf courses are run, owned, belonged to etc... it's an affiliation of where you play, or have played or some course you like...a personal connection.  A corporation is different in that it makes products for everyone that you choose to purchase and in turn they profit from you.  (they profit more when you lose a lot of golf balls for instance and have to purchase more).  If you have the same type of pride in a particular brand then that's fine but it's something new and/or different on the scale its seen currently, something that makes no sense to me.  Sure a team is a 'product' and their merch is such but...there is a lot more to that culturally.  For instance: if from chicago; are you a cubs fan or sox fan?  new york: mets or yanks?  etc...  it's a cultural statement and it's different than some company.  If you dad and his dad worked for titleist, got into bar fights with taylor made or srixon fans after games, and if you traveled across the country to boo guys that played nike balls etc.... well that would start to rival sports teams then.  :)

I think you are confused.  It was a question not an attack or 'judgement'.  It wasn't intended to be 'worrying about someone elses choices'.

I merely made an obvservation and I asked why.  If anything the snobs are the ones trying to act/dress like pro's while also promoting a company that they donate their hard earned money to at the same time.  How about buying the hat that supports the course where your friend works or where you pay to play locally instead?  when did people stop doing this in the first place to the point where it's hard to even find a non golf club company hat in a pro shop these days?

btw, i'll make a judgement on fashion: throw away those pleated dockers please.  My grandfather doesn't even wear those to family picnics anymore.  ;)

Agree with the last comment :) And I had a chuckle about the TaylorMade/Srixon fight. Well played!

I can answer your last question: for me, the hats my local courses offer are crap. Most are adjustable denim hats that are super flimsy - I've always liked crisp, pro-fitted hats like the MLB wears. So I wear the Titleist FJ/ProV1 hat. I also wear an A's hat and a Florida Gators hat, depending on my mood - all 3 are fitted wool caps. I give my courses money every time I play, and unless I'm going out of town I play the same 5-6 courses in rotation. I choose not to belong to a specific course for this very reason.

I know I am not a compensated, endorsed pro. Believe me, my wife let's me know that every few weeks when she sees the money going OUT for golf and ZILCH coming in for golf

point being: i'm not paying $22 to $30 for a hat that is just an advertisement for clubs/balls.  If the hat was free then maybe but paying for it just seems ridiculous and backwards.  they should give out hats for free with clubs/balls you purchase if anything.

So your friend thought the guy wanted to look like a pro golfer at a concert?

How is wearing the hat of the redsox or yankees any different that a titleist hat.  You are wearing the same hat as Jeter wears while playing professional baseball, i.e. you looking like a pro.

no, it just brought up the conversation about how few hats you see people wearing that aren't a club or ball brand these days and how it used to be the opposite way around.

I already explained my opinion on the difference plus baseball hats for about 20 years have been part of fashion apart from baseball.  I don't see hip hop moguls wearing color coordinated srixon hats that match their hand made custom foot joy saddle shoes for instance.

I agree the hats at golf clubs are GARBAGE!!!!  I have a collection of the fitted Titleist hats because they fit perfectly....

I have to worry about anyone that would wear a Gators anything????  Do you wear matching jean shorts?

Is this really the conversation we have going on???????????  We should file this one under Who Gives a Flip!

I think the branded hats look cool personally....

Its a Phillies or Flyers hat for me usually but I have been thinking about picking up this cool looking nike one I saw at golf galaxy.

I wear the Titleist half-mesh hats because I like them, not because it says Titleist.  If I found one similar that didn't say anything I would wear it.  If it said Joe's Crab Shack of "fill in the blank" I'd probably wear it too.  I am big into cycling.  You see lots of cyclist wear jerseys with all sorts of crap all over them.  I don't wear them because they are mega expensive.  I wear plain ones that are comfortable and tons cheaper.  Different people have different motives what they wear.  Don't worry about it.

who is worrying?   it's simple a trend worth noting.  It seems like brand loyalty is both at an all time high and low at the same time somehow.   It's like chevy vs ford but everyone is really close to giving the other type a shot.

    • I kind of like this interpretation especially if you think about it the unplayable rule would probably put you in a better spot.  using back on the line releief.
    • I did not realize that, I was thinking a more traditional golf club.
    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
