Clarke's Greatest Moment?

I had always thought Clarke's greatest moment would be the 2006 Ryder Cup. To come back mere weeks after what happened and get a 100% record at the Ryder Cup will always be one of my greatest golfing memories. I attended 2 days of the matches and have never been so emotional (and seen people so emotional) over a golfer achieving what he achieved that week.

Of course, winning a major is the pinnacle of golf, but does the Ryder Cup story surpass this?

I also added in the WGCs just to put another option in there.

Really? Certainly happens this side of the pond. And this situation is further enhanced by the story behind it. Different priorities, I guess.

it's a great story, and the ryder cup is a great event. but at the end of the day, golf is an individual sport, and those individuals are judged based on their individual triumphs.

Surely a lack of players with 8+ majors from Europe would only make a major that more important when won?

From a golfing point of view his Open win, but personally for me his play and presence at the Ryder Cup 2006 I'll always remember. Showed real courage. Golf is an individual sport 99.9% of the time, but he chose not to let his friends (team) down when most people would have understood him not playing. Amy Mickelson going to him as the players and wives were announced was special. Darren just comes across as one of golfs really down to earth normal people. Couldn't be happier for him. The Guinness will be flowing.

OP -- you're talking about an emotional moment.

His greatest moment as a golfer, it is an individual game for the most part, is the Open Win.

We do remember Ryder Cuppers ... but that's only once every two years. Sergio - great RC, but individually, meh, so far. Pavin - great RC, Leonard - great putt. Those are moments. They do not define careers.

This win for Clarke helps define his career.

yes, and that's exactly why i said a great champion is known for winning a major, not for winning a ryder cup. the more majors the europeans win, the more important they will become to europeans.

The Open was the biggest win for Clarke, proof that all this big hitting nonsense, is just that. He showed how to play real British golf in true British conditions

bitter? who's bitter? not sure where you came up with that observation. i'm glad for clarke just as i'm sure most on this site are, this win solidifies his place in history as a great champion.

British Open win but I got another good moment from him... Masters wednesday practice round in 2007 I was sitting on 16 and Clarke hit his shot and then tried the tradition of skipping it across the pond. Well it was a poor attempt and someone in the crowd yelled "oh come on I could do it better than that" Clarke says with a smile "well come here and do it then". Next thing I know Clarke tells the marshall to let the guy through and hands him a club. The guys shot was also very poor but I thought very highly of Clarke after seeing that happen.

I'm  one of those bitter Americans who was rooting for Darren over Phil and Dustin.
