you know, the type where i want to chip it like 20-30 yards, i just keep on skulling it or hitting fat, i really cant get the right feel for this swing, it seems all or nothing

i can do a relaxed full swing and knock 10-15 yards off most clubs, but the 3/4 - 2/4 swing just doesnt work for me :(

any ideas on good drills?

I used to decelerate pretty hardcore with halfswings.  Have you tried mentally swinging THROUGH the ball even though you take a half swing?  That usually helps me.  I just try to accelerate the clubhead through the ball and not worry about the distance because the halfswing really helps with the distance so just don't worry about it really taking off.

yeah ive tried almost everything (except the right thing it appears)

i jsut seem to struggle with the mechanics, making a full swing feels easy, even initiation a half swing feels odd and out of sorts

ive found a few online tips, im wondering if my stance is to wide and ive forgotten to correct it from my normal irons stance?

tried that poser, felt even weirder lol and ended up trying to scoop the ball almost

Tom - i usually have an open stance on most shots as a cure for me constantly aiming wide right and then pushing shots further right

I have more success when I feel athletic (slight weight shift to avoid a hands-only swing) on a very short backswing and a 2-times as long follow-through. I want to keep a good tempo (for me that feels slow) and get through the ball. A choked up club and a solid follow-through are working. Ball off back foot. Feet 15* open. Shoulders square. Keep my trail elbow tight on the backswing and my lead elbow out on the follow-through. Keep the left arm straight to help make solid contact. Hands lead the club-head. There's my check-list. Good luck.

cheers rusty, off to the chipping greens and bunkers tonight to work on things, my bunker play is atrocious so will start on that, then work on pitching

thats if i get past the birmingham riots first lol

Consider starting with chipping, then bunker and other work. My pros tell me that chipping is the best way to practice correct contact with hands leading. They recommend beginning every session with chip shots before moving to other swings, including full swings.

In Dave Pelz' short game bible, he stresses a full finish, even on 1/2 shots. It may look/feel weird, but it has helped me make sure i don't decelerate into the ball. Give it a try.

cheers guys

shot 89, first time of ever breaking 90, but it certainly wasnt due to my chipping!!!

I hit a few good ones, but struggled for good contact as the fairways were so solid i was just catching everything fat...

bunker play was noticeably better and improved though

    • Ah, I like the BDC hat.    DING There's a phrase about counting unhatched chickens. I think it applies here.
    • Trip to Oregon was no good, hit the driver terrible so I was basically scrambling every hole. Slowly working my way through my left misses off the tee. Mostly mechanics but also part mental with trusting it on the course. Can't reproduce the miss on the range. Finished one shot out of playoff for US Mid Am and US FourBall qualifiers.  Got a decent lead in our points race. Noticed that as I've been trying to improve rib cage and hip depth that the right ankle and foot would get unstable. Asked my trainer/pt about it and this is what he recommended. He just got certified in a foot program. Fingers crossed but for the first time I can really feel myself winding up the upper torso over a solid lower body. But doing it athletically not just faking it by not moving stuff around. It's the most rib cage rotation I've had going back without trying to force it. I like that I’m doing more work at the joint and that the joint is inside my right ankle at 4. I think the key for me with this foot tripod thing is to keep the right knee over the foot, not letting it rotate towards the middle of my stance. I can feel the "spiraling" effect. I have high arches and when I go into my backswing the foot supinates incorrectly losing the big toe joint contact. Ideally you would want to "build" more of an arch of the foot on the backswing and use that "ramp" on the downswing. This would be another way of explaining it. If the arch of the foot collapses then you basically lose access to the deep front line.
    • Day 211.  Played 18 today, and really came to life in the second nine.  3 pars, bogey, 3 pars, closed out with two bogeys.   Shot a 39 for the second nine, something I'm not sure I've done at that course before (Hansen Dam).  I've had days where I hit a bunch of GIRs on that second nine, one day it was 7 GIR + 2 near, but I think I shot 40 or 41 on the second nine that day.
    • And Chamblee said Poulter is the worst ball striker "By a lot" of all the players and Poulter won his singles match by 3 holes LOL...   Best result of the European players and most of the USA players, guess that's what you call an anomaly. Unbelievable how stupid that statement was, the Postman did himself proud....
