I am finally breaking down and taking the 2 iron out of my bag to go with a hybrid club.  I am wanting something that goes in between my 3 iron that I hit around 215 and my 3 wood that I hit around 260 off of the fairway.  I am wanting to something that goes 225-235, but I want it to go have the flight of around a 4 iron.  I am thinking about hitting some 5 woods as well, but I know they aren't going to be as good out of the bad lies.  Any suggestions on what I should look at brand wise and if you thing I should lean to a hybrid or a 5W.  Thanks in advance.

I let go of my 2 iron a few years ago and went hybrid. I recently found one I really like, the Adams Idea Pro Gold with the Matrix shaft. I get it out the @ 230 carry. I love it so much I bought the 20* as well which gets me @ 215 carry while the 4 iron comes in at 200.  I found them on Ebay, new for 69.99 each. I haven't looked back.

What would you compare the trajectory of the 18 degree hybrid that carries 230 to?  3iron? 4iron?  I like the feel of the Adams.  I will definitely check this one out.  I am also looking at their 5 wood.  I have a two par 3's on my course that are 230 and 235 from the tips.  My three iron just rarely gets close.  I want something I don't have to try to kill to reach these greens.  I hit my dad's nickent the other day on the 235 hole to about five feet.  I am looking at these as well.  This club would also help on a couple of the longer par 5's we have.

I have the 19* ADAMS Black super hybrid.  I realize this is essentially a 3i replacement, but the super hybrid has a slightly larger head and is almost a mix of fairway wood & hybrid.  As such, it goes longer than it's loft may indicate.   This fits the gap between my 3w and my irons nicely.  I would strongly suggest you try this hybrid with the Aldila Voodoo shaft...it is awesome and very dependable.  Ball flight is high, but doesn't balloon like others I have tried.

Funny, I had the Nickent 17* and ditched it for the Adams. The Nickent was ok, but I could not hit the shots that I can hit with the Adams. Yesterday I hit the 3h into a par 5 greenside bunker with the trajectory of a 3 iron, then again on a short par four but teed it 1/4" off the ground and hit it more like a 3 wood.  Later I hit the 18* off the tee (this one is my favorite) and it had the trajectory of the 3 wood.  With these clubs I can get a little more creative than I could with the Nickent.  You can hit them high, low, draw, and any combination of those with a little practice. The versatility blows doors on a 2 iron with better reliability.

The model I bought was the Adams Pro Gold which has the metal face and then a distinct black line and body which makes it look like you are looking down at the top line of an iron. I didn't think that I would like that look, but it helped me to swing it more like an iron and since then I have had really good results with them. The 2h is so good, that I often leave the 3w in the bag as the 2h is money off the tee.

I hope this was helpful.

I would go with a hybrid since you get great distance from your 3-wood and because of the reasons you've already stated. What are the lofts on your 3-wood and 3-iron? If they're something like 15 and 21 degrees, a 19-degree hybrid would be a good option. I'm in a similar position because I recently lost my TaylorMade Rescue 09, which I was a big fan of. I tried to replace it with the exact same club, but my fitter told me the new one was actually 16 degrees. Probably going to look for another one or perhaps go with the Titleist 909H.

Thanks for the tips guys.  I guess I have been missing out when it comes to the hybrid technology.   I am thinking the Adams is going to be the way I am going to go.  I just need to hit them to figure out if I need to go with the 18 or 19 degree.  I would like to go with the 19 for the added loft, but I am not sure if I am going to be able to get 235 carry out of it with a 90% swing.  I have tried to swing 85-90% this year, and it has helped me become more consistent even though I have lost a little distance.  The one advantage the 18 is that I would be able to use it off of the tee on narrow holes where I want to just get something in play.  I will take some out to the range and see what ends up being the best.

I played the course today that has the two 230ish par 3's.  I killed my 3 iron on one of the holes carrying it the 230.  The other one I didn't quite catch it flush and it into the water.  I am really looking forward to adding a hybrid to the bag to help with these holes.

Anybody have any opinions of Wishon.  I hit a Wishon 775HS on the monitor today.  It was a 21 degree.  I was carrying it 217-224.  I was still hoping to get more like 230 carry, since this would leave a smaller gap between my 3wood(260ish) and my 3 iron(215ish).  I really liked the feel of this club, but I think going to the 18 degree is going to cause me to lose to much of the height.  I want to be albe to have it come down softly. I will hit the 18 degree, but I am going to keep searching for the perfect fit.

I like Wishon. My fitter build me a custom 3-wood (915HL), and I love the pear-shaped, low profile design. Great sound at impact too. As I mentioned above, I'm also looking for a new hybrid, and he told me the new Wishon models can be bent four degrees in either direction, so you could probably get a club in the 19- or 19.5-degree range to fit your distance gap.

Thanks, Larry.  I think bending the 21 to around 19.5 will get the 230 carry I am wanting without having to swing too hard.  I will go back to the monitor to dial it in with the correct shaft.  How are they out of the rough?  Do you know what the prices are on these?

I only have the 3-wood and haven't hit the hybrids, but I've seen most of the models in my fitter's shop, and they look pretty standard. Based on the design of the sole, the 775 looks like it would be great from the rough. I checked my fitter's website, and the 775 is one of the adjustable hybrids. I would guess the heads are around $25 based on my having the 3-wood built for $100 all in. Keep me posted.

At least test-hit some 5Ws. As a fairway wood, the 5W has more bulge and roll on its face. This creates the gear effect, which means that heel and toe hits will spin back toward center. Also, a 5W has a longer shaft than a hybrid, and will go farther. And at 18* or 19* loft, the 5W can pop the ball out of a shaggy lie.

I see you hold an 8 HDCP, meaning you probably get through the ball pretty well on your swing. For hybrids, look at the Pro or Tour heads. These are square-faced - rather than closed - with minimal offset, and are less likely to encourage hooks than standard hybrid heads. Something to keep in mind.

Thanks, WUTiger.  I definitely don't want anything to promote a draw.  I hit a 2-7yard draw on average. I will also try getting a hold of a 5W to see how they all compare.

Update:  I got talked into going with a 21 degree Wishon 775.  I love the club.  My fitter told me that we could lenghen the shaft an inch or so to get a little extra distance.  I hit 20 balls on the monitor with it today.  I hit them really well, but my carry range was 222-228.  I am really wanting to be able to consistently carry it 230, so I am no so sure this is going to work.  I also let them record me hitting my 3 iron.  I was hoping that maybe I have been overestimating my 3 iron carry of 215, but I was hitting it 215-218 carry according to the launch monitor.  I will take them out to the course this weekend, so I can get it figured out one way or the other.  Worse case scenario is I tell them that I need to have it changed from a 21 to a 19.5 degree.

It sounded like they would have to send the head in to change the loft.  I would have thought this would be something the could do in house.  Any thoughts?

Try the titleist hybrids.  For a good player they're awesome.  I have the older 585h 19˚ and I love, but I've heard similarly good things about the newer ones.  I carry my 20˚ 3i 210-215 on a smooth stroke.  My 585h carries 215-220 on a smooth stroke but with a trajectory more like my 4i-5i.  On softer flat greens it'll come to rest no more than a yard past the divot when hit from the fairway with good contact, and I've even brought it back a little going into an uphill green.

It's also an excellent 5w replacement off the tee.  Teed up just 1/8" I can carry it 225-230 consistently, and I've carried 260 on my best hits, and had a few days where my average carry with it is closer to 240 off the tee.

And I can work the ball with it if I want to.  I've hit excellent recovery purposeful slices and hooks with it before from behind trees.  And I find it easier to work that club than my 3i or 4i (except with punches, but then I can't hit it full distance).  It's solid out of normal rough but in heavy rough I'll still hit my 3i instead.

    • It's not. 🤣 It's over 90 seconds into a 5-minute video before they say anything about physics, and when they do, they talk about mastering the double pendulum with a definition that includes gravity or something. Here, @GreenhornGolfer and others: https://amzn.to/3IHnf0N. Buy that.
    • Barring a disaster, this will be Scheffler's fourth major and only missing the US Open for a career slam.
    • Have slowly been working on hooding my long irons less. Using a much more neutral grip and a feel of swinging above the waist. This was the 2nd swing today. A clean clip with a 4-iron with what seems like an okay centered pivot and decent balanced finish.
    • Nobody is getting close and Scottie is not letting them. BDC could've had a shot without that awful Thursday. He shot 16 under on the last three days.
