I wouldn't do any long distance running. studies have shown that running long distance is such a strain on your body that those who do it end up loosing muscle mass because its impossible to fuel your body enough and it starts feeding on itself. Also, there have recently been studies showing that long distance running can lead to shorter lifespans.

Show up at a marathon and tell that to the 80+ age group that run.  I think you need to read some new studies.  There is a group of runners that do whats called Ultras which are double marathons and some people have had some issues running those because they were not in proper shape.  Overall long distance running is one of the best things you can do to maintain a higher max heart rate and good cardio vascular conditioning.

I could see the muscle loss thing but with proper diet, you can minimize the muscle loss.  Cross training with weights helps.  I know quite a few guys around here that run half marathons and are by no means lacking muscle.  But it does burn up some muscle though...a lot of that comes down to heart rate and training in the right zone.

As far as long distance running leading to shorter life spans, I don't believe that for a minute.
