If every golfer were an 18 or better handicap, would slow play be a thing of the past?

Hi Everyone,  I am new to this forum. I live in Malta, play off 7, and I think it depends on the type of person you are, whether you are a low handicapper or a high one.

Obviously if you play army golf, and make your way down the fairway diagonally then you will hold other golfers up, but equally if you are a low handicap, you would possibly put more thought in to your shot making and hence take more time.

It couldnt hurt....another problem is that too many folks hit from the wrong teebox  (amazing how many people think they warrant the tips!!)

...so military golf ensues...as in "left, right, left" and fetching the errant shots wastes lots of time...to make matters worse yet at my course they often let 5-somes, six-somes and the like play...as if foursomes arent slow enough...and these guys rarely let others play through....it can literally add more than an hour to your round and destroy any tempo you might be establishing...

oh and one more classic time killer that backs things up is guys who VASTLY overestimate their distance...as in sitting at their second shot on a par 5 waiting for the green to clear...didnt realize there were so many PGA bombers out there....love when they finally hit and chunk it 60 yards or so...not even reaching the 150 marker!!   LOL

I love when this happens for me though, in my favor. I get the awkward stares and have even had guys park their carts at the turn and look back at my next shot to see if I made the green or not. At my local course the Par 5 9th hole is 486 yards and I'm usually around 200-220 out. Generally, the wind has almost always been at my back as well and I play a 3, 4, or 5i depending on the wind, lie and pin location. It doesn't bother me if I miss and have them look at me like I'm stupid, and it doesn't boost my ego when I stick it and they get upset.. or whatever else they're thinking.

I only do this when I know I can make it and I really don't care what people think. If I'm waiting for you to clear the green, I'm not holding you up or interfering with your play. Stop rubbernecking and move on is my opinion lol.

I'm only showing etiquette and caution by doing this. Go forbid I hit one slightly thin and rocket one out of control.

I'm pretty sure he was referring to waiting on groups that are waiting for the green to clear. Rubbernecking? Why would he be looking back unless you were hitting into his group?

I played behind a lot of players this summer who couldn't hit a drive 200 yards but would repeatedly wait for the green to clear from >250 out. Very frustrating.

[/quote Absolutely agree. You know it can happen, so you are definitely doing the right thing by waiting. Better safe than sorry for sure.

Maybe 15 minutes faster on average, but not much more than that.  If the pace of play is over 4 hours 30 minutes,,its either time for more "marshalling' or to find a different course.

Make it an important tournament with under 18 handicaps and its almost certain that the pace of play will be slower than 4 hours 15 minutes,,so in the end, its really not the handicap that determines play.  Its the mindset of the players on the course.

I was also referring to the green clearing, read the what you quoted.

He was referring to people waiting for greens to clear, that they cannot reach. The thing is, you do not know if someone else can reach that green or not. You may not be able to, but the guy waiting obviously has some type of caution in mind. I was referring to an instance (similar situation) where people in front of us were kind of staring back at my group from the turn because we were waiting for almost 15 minutes for them to clear the green. At that point, I obviously knew they were waiting to see my next shot to see why I was waiting. The group behind us was also doing that "leaning on the club" move where they're acting frustrating and being bitchy. I stuck the green and when we got inside the club house one of the guys in their group said he saw the shot and complimented me. I was extremely lucky on the particular shot because it was high risk.

I did read what I quoted, and then I typed what I typed.

That poster seemed to be speaking from experience as a player following a player who continually waits for areas to clear that he couldn't possibly reach. You obviously have above average distance and your home course anecdote probably isn't very similar to the situation that poster was describing. Kudos on waiting though, because most people in the group ahead would prefer the following player erred on the side of caution. Not sure what's going down with the weirdos at your course.

I'm telling you man, there are definitely some nut jobs at my local course here. 90% of the guys that come through the course are great and personable, easy to get along with and play with as well. That other 10% though, they're just... well, weird as hell to be honest. Everything is a pissing contest and they're just over all negative and nasty people to be around. They're the type of people like I said, that will turn and watch your shots if they don't agree with what you're doing, and hope you fail just to feel better about themselves. It's pretty sad, but I am sure there are many golfers like this out there. I also use the term "golfers" loosely when describing these people. It's a shame that everyone can't just get on about their business. For someone to be a group ahead of me and stare me down like I'm an idiot for using caution in regards to their own safety, is very dumb. If I see someone having a bad round or something, I tend to go out of my way to get a laugh out of them or crack a joke if I know it won't piss them off further lol. I just don't get people who get off on other people's failures or mishaps, or anticipate a bad golf shot to have something to laugh at.

I'll get back on topic now. That was my rant of the day I guess. I wish I could fix stupid....

    • We do not buy extended warranties. We will use one of our credit cards for the purchase that extends the warranty "x 2". Our thoughts are: a. if the item is a lemon, it will likely break right away and we can attempt to apply the original warranty or credit card extension. b. over the long haul, we will probably save more money by not purchasing the extended warranty and fixing/junking broken items out of our own pocket. The important thing is to keep some records of purchases so one may make a claim under the manufacturer's warranty. I recently sent back some Footjoy shoes for leaking and Footjoy did a reat job of making the claim process work very well. I had the original receipt, warrant info and box. Easy peasy.
