That is true, but they're not "rules-with-a-capital-R" specifically because they vary. There's not a single answer to "What are winter rules?" You have to ask at the course you're playing.

In the bag:

Maybe you will not see your ball knocked into the hole but you will certainly see lots of situations where your or someone else's ball is moved by another player's ball. Same Rule applies to those situations as well so you'd better remember it.

  • 5 years later...

What would be the ruling if this happened when both players played a blind shot. Neither player saw the ball hit the the other so they assumed it was a hole-in-one.

But later in the clubhouse another player playing a different hole who did see it advised what had  happened ?

18-1/3 Player Unaware Ball Moved by Outside Agency Does Not Replace Ball

Q.In stroke play, a player's ball was moved by an outside agency. Neither the player nor his caddie was aware that his ball had been moved, so the player played the ball without replacing it. He then learned that his ball had been moved. What is the ruling?

A.As it was not known or virtually certain that the ball had been moved by an outside agency when the player played the ball, he proceeded properly and incurred no penalty.

This happened yesterday in the LPGA tournament.  Lexi Thompson and Nelly Korda both hit their tee shots and I believe Nelly's ball hit Lexi's.   Since neither player or their caddies saw exactly what happened, they played it as it lied.

Plenty of spectators but no participants or officials.   They played them as they found them.   The TV viewing audience saw it happen.

The last time I saw it happen live was at the very same event and the crowd directed the players where to put the ball. The players hadn't seen the balls collide.

The crowd should have helped out there.

Not that it makes any difference to the ruling but was that on the green?

Yes, that time it was. Uphill approach that neither player could see.

would the players be required to accept the comments from the gallery? I can see one person placing  the ball in a spot and another saying its off by several feet.

Unless they had a very good reason not to, basically… yes.
