I love watching golf instructional videos on youtube and would like to see some other good videos members have been watching.. Being new to this game I love getting more information about it.. I know youtube isn't going to replace getting lessons but its free and you can actually get some good tips.. Here's one that I like a lot..

So I was doing this pivot drill from Dana Dahlquist today and realized after a few dozen balls that I was actually hitting my 9 iron with better dispersion, better flight and 85 - 90% of the distance that I get from my full swing. Didn't know whether to laugh or cry. Anyway, I highly recommend it.

This thread is a great resource. Would it be worth making a sticky?

Anyway, I like the shadow line drill where the stick is in the ground and you have to get your hands past the shadow. The other one I find valuable, for me anyway, is how small the shoulders move back (6-8 inches) and through. I actually had good results by just thinking about the right shoulder pushing the left shoulder 6-8 inches to start the back swing, and the right shoulder pushing the left(6-8 inches) back to impact. It was a great feel for me.

Nice article by Sean Foley in Golf Digest.  Not new data - but presented fairly well.

I have been a golf teacher for 25 years and you have to find a swing that will fit your body style and what you can do that is easy for

you to duplicate.  There are hundreds of different swing methods out there and every golf instructor is doing their best to get you to hit

or swing at the ball in an easy to understand method.  Watch video and read books.  Try the method you like on the range. Do drills

and remember aim at the center of the green and not the flag.  You want your misses to be some where on or near the green.

Practice your putting 40% of the time. Short game 20%, Driving 20%. Irons 10% and Pitching from 60 yards in 10%.

You can change the the percentages around to fit your game depending on your weekness.  Keep a record of your Putts per round,

fairways hit, greens hit. sand saves. etc.  Have fun and never through a club.  Find an instructor that is close to your physical stature

and you must like him.or her.  Dirt Digger

Well done video, basic 101 information for beginners.  Good to see Grant in this one.  Very much describing a pattern we use for beginners or golfers that have never hit a draw.

Gonna have to agree to disagree on this one Mike since I dont think any beginner is going to get through this video and understand more than about 25%. WHat about the video Erick just made? The reason I posted the first video is because I think there can be too much of an emphasis on moving the torso in a way that moves the arms because it's popular to talk about the big muscles controlling the swing.  A lot of fear out there with getting too "handsy".  Can lead to players having their arms lag behind their pivot.  I was just telling my son yesterday to feel more "karate chop" to speed up his arms from the top of the backswing to impact.

In an optimum swing where everything is harmonized, the swing motion looks effortless and smooth. I've taken many lessons from Bender, little over 2 hour driver, past 10+ years. He is definitely 'arm' focused teacher. IMHO, many of the amateur golfers could use more arm swing in their swing vs. body when seeking distance. In my recent good playing rounds, I've added a bit of arm swing to my S&T-ish; pattern.

    • And like Matt said, and I have hinted at… it's ONE ROUND. Because you have to get hot. Better players than him failed to get through. And… Peaked too soon, perhaps. He could also get injured, get surpassed, lose interest or lose his game… Again, if I trusted y'all to uphold the bet, and if the bet wasn't basically a 15-year proposition… I'd bet y'all. The odds are against him, and heavily so.
    • He shot -5 with a bogey on the last hole. Those Monday Q events are seriously tough to get through. Lots of very very good players play in those, including normally a fair few tour players who've lost their cards, including past winners. It is a small sample size, but he also just broke one of Tiger's records (youngest ever to be ranked one in AJGA if memory serves). He's the best 15 year old in the world at the moment. He's also pretty small and skinny - if he grows and fills out a bit and gets stronger, he could be a serious force to be reckoned with. He may of course also go off the boil and struggle or his swing may not last his growth or something, so it's not like he's odds on to make it or anything like that. I think it will be interesting to see how he progresses and if (big if granted) he progresses well, then he will be quite the prospect.
    • At a basic level, you can take those strokes gained numbers and if you know what the baseline strokes to hole out is from each distance, you can figure out how many strokes on average you will take to hole out from any given spot on the golf course. Then you can take that shot zone thing from shotscope and put it down there and see what the average is for each club and each target you choose. That's not exactly trivial to do though even with a computer, so the strategy guides (like LSW) use rules of thumb to make those decisions easier for you to make on the fly. Most of the time you'll come up with the optimal strategy and on the odd occasion when you don't, the strategy you come up with will be pretty darn close to optimal. If you're anything like me, then you'll probably wind up being a little too conservative with both club choice and target. Fear of penalty strokes can make you play suboptimally. Basically it's a bad idea to base your strategy on a shot that might pop up less than 1 in 20 times. If you happen to hit that shot, then today just isn't your day, but the 19 times you don't, you'll be in that much better of a spot.
    • That sounds like a small sample size issue. What if the PGA tour event he was trying to get into just happened to fit his game perfectly? Also, he could just be playing hot right now. I’ll put this in the wait-and-see category.
    • I've used a construction laser for years. Far less expensive than the PuttAim laser.
