Hi All

Could I start a thread where we post our best ever golf tips? Not videos or long technical treatises from the real students of the game, just small bite size pearls of wisdom which have done us some good. They can be technique tips, scoring tips, swing thoughts, even just pithy remarks with a kernel of golf truth. I am making a collection of golf tips and would love to hear yours.

Been chipping this way for the last month or so and have been getting up and down like a w-hore's drawers! Feels intellectually consistent, too. Which I like.

Some really interesting stuff here, if you've got the patience and can forgive the useless headline, which makes you expect the usual golf magazine dreck.

Quote:
I rarely try to hit the ball dead straight with the driver. Having determined exactly where I want the ball to finish, I'll play down the left or right side of the fairway, fading or drawing the ball toward my target. I give myself the entire width of the fairway to play with. If the best spot for the approach is close to a left-side fairway bunker, I make that spot my target, then ensure against hitting into the bunker by fading the ball

Bender has his academy about a hard 6-iron from my house. Good guy. Unfortunately the course in the development, and the one Bender has his academy on, was recently bought by a complete idiot and although a fun, HARD track, is now virtually unplayable due to neglect. I live 500 yards from the first tee and refuse to play it. A real shame, and Bender's losing his mind.....

From the latest Golf Digest, article written by Mike Bender (Zach's instructor)

@mvmac , what did you think about the whole piece? I just finished reading it, and it seems (to me) to highlight my own issues. Not getting the arms down fast enough, "turning hard and then trying to get the arms through". Not 100% sure what to take from it. Just thought it fit me. I know I had always read to swing hard with the body. Probably why my swing looks like it does right now.

Overall MUCH better than most

Things I like:

- Feeling the right hip turn behind you and towards the target

- Hands need depth

- Steady head

- "never seen a player that didn't move the hips on the downswing"

- "feel heavy in your feet" - on downswing

- Speed comes from the arms

- Drills are good

Things I didn't like

- Too much talk or emphasis about the spine tilting right on the backswing, don't know why he felt that was important to point out. I can just see guys overdoing it, turning too flat and thinking their head is centered. The example is of Zach is awesome though.

- "Your hips will move forward a little, but only a twitch", to me they move more than a twitch but he or the editor could have just been playing it safe.

Things to be careful of

- The swinging your arms down faster is typically a good feel, IMO it tends to come after the pivot pieces are in decent order. The article tends to advocate "swing the arms faster and the hips stuff takes care of itself", to me it depends on the player and the other pieces at play. Most golfers don't really "get" how far forward the weight needs to be or at least how far forward it will feel.

Yes I think so. I would also assume the hips forward/axis tilt, hands back (which isn't necessary), ball forward/emphasis on swinging up is relatively new.

Good seeing top instructors evolve. Unlike other guys who say they're all about the facts and paradigm shifts but have their heads in the sand when new information is presented to them.

How do you get in contact with the people giving these videos? All of them but especially Mario.

Thanks to all for great videos

I would recommend just googling them.
