Tiger's Back!  And looking forward to partnering up with Tony Romo

Quote:

At this week’s AT&T; Pebble Beach National Pro-Am that trend could change if his celebrity partner, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, has his way.

“He can really move the ball. With the training that they do and the explosiveness that he has it translates to golf,” Woods said on Tuesday. “They have so much more power than we as golfers do. . . . He’s playing from the up tees this week, which should be fun . . . good for us.”

Woods also made light of a discrepancy over Romo’s handicap index. “They want to give him a plus-3 handicap, which is complete BS. I mean he’s a scratch. I play to a scratch every tournament, I’m a scratch,” he smiled.

And here are some Power Rankings to check out for the week

1. Tiger Woods: Woods began his season with a T-3 finish at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship. A final round slouch left him without a trophy, but his record at Pebble - including a T-4 in his 2010 U.S. Open bid - should give him an edge.

2. D.A. Points: The defending champion here is off to a hot start in 2012, beginning the year with a pair of top-10 finishes. Points teams again with Bill Murray, who clearly has a good influence on him.

3. Bryce Molder: Finally equipped with a PGA Tour win, Molder has been in the top ten in each of the last two years at Pebble Beach.

4. Spencer Levin: If Kyle Stanley can do it, so can Spencer Levin. Phoenix was a brutal lesson, but Levin can learn quickly at Pebble. He was fourth here last year and won the 2004 California State Amateur at Pebble Beach.

5. Dustin Johnson: A two-time champion in this event, Johnson clearly enjoys golf on the edge of the Pacific. An inconsistent start to the year, hampered in part by a nagging injury, is a cause for concern.

6. Hunter Mahan: Starting the year with a T-6 at Torrey Pines, discount what happened in the sand-swept Qatar Masters. Runner-up here last year, Mahan should be a good pick if he's over jet lag.

7. Martin Laird: The Scot has two top-15 finishes in three events this year, including a second-place finish in the opener at Kapalua. He ranks seventh on the money list.

8. Phil Mickelson: It's not saying much, but Phil had his best finish of the year (T-26) at Phoenix last week. He's won at Pebble three times and has been in the top ten in each of the last two years.

9. Jeff Maggert: Maggert is a sleeper this week, having the sixth-best record against the field average in 2012. He was runner-up here in 2004, so he has shown the capacity to perform at Pebble.

10. Bob Estes: Estes is sneaky good here, notching top-10 finishes in 2009 and '10. He's under pressure to earn money to score better status through a major medical exemption, which could be a motivator.

My guess is Tiger is going to finish Top 5 for sure... He is swinging very well.  If his putter gets hot, he could win.  The biggest thing for him is he needs to finish 4 consecutive rounds sub 70 which he hasn't done in awhile while on tour.

Perfect weather, and lots of guys going low, but that is unreal. Ken Duke finished -8; Danny Lee and Charlie Wi are both -8 through 14.

Danny Lee has game. I expect him to win this season.

Great swing too. Probably weighs around 160ish, but bombs the ball

It looks like Monterey and Pebble are playing the easiest right now while Spyglass is playing the most difficult. Lowest score on Spyglass is (-6) and Tiger is (-4) on the same course. If conditions persist, I see Tiger in the final group on Sunday.

Ryan

Right now I'd have to say DJ looks like the guy to beat, but Tiger's driving and putting today were very good. He's still having distance control problems with his irons, though. And I think Tiger got the best draw, since he gets to play Pebble Beach two days in a row, while DJ will have two days of non-Pebble before Sunday.

Yeah Spyglass always plays the hardest, tests every part of your game

Does anybody know where I can find the purse breakdown for this weekend? (and all of the tournaments in 2012) I'm interested to see what the guys at the bottom make compared to those at the top. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

I think Tiger will be in the hunt Sunday, possibly final group.

I really want to see Lee keep in contention, if he can shoot around 67-69 on Spyglass today, he will be on the right track and hopefully play good on the weekend.

The purse breakdown is standard for every event. It's just based on a percentage. I think the winner gets 17 or 18% (someone made a comment when Tiger was out that the average purse just went up xx% - the winner's share), and second might get 12 or 13%, and it drops from there. If you find one recent tournament and look at the payouts and the total purse, you'll be able to figure out the percentages, and work from there, too. This early in the year it shouldn't be too difficult since people have only played one, two, or a few events.

I can't find an official chart, but here are a couple of unofficial ones, which seem to disagree, but will get you in the ballpark: http://frankosport.com/golf/Purse/index.html#PM01 http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090212081218AAwqkVd And you can get the total purses from here: http://www.pgatour.com/r/schedule/

Since I started watching an hour ago, I've seen more Chris Berman than any actual Tour player. I really don't need to see him take three shots to get from a green side bunker into the adjacent deep rough.

Every year, I watch less and less golf on tv and every year, more highlights are available via the internets.

The technology exists for there to be a paying feed for people who just want to see shots, not content produced for the mainstream. I wish someone would take the initiative.

Steve

Kill slow play. Allow walking. Reduce ineffective golf instruction. Use environmentally friendly course maintenance.

I've noticed for this event each year, Golf Channel treats this event like an exhibition since so many celebrities play it. It's as if they forget that an acutal PGA tournament is going on. And it's not like the Reno Tahoe Open where all high-profile tour players are off playing a major!

This is one of the reasons The Masters has been so great lately. It could still be better, but it's miles past everyone else. [quote name="RPMPIRE" url="/t/55577/2012-at-t-pebble-beach-national-pro-am-discussion-thread#post_678627"] I've noticed for this event each year, Golf Channel treats this event like an exhibition since so many celebrities play it. Tons of commercials today as well, which is already Golf Channel's M.O. on Thursday and Friday rounds. They just showed Tiger and Phil's back nines all at once, because they haven't actually been showing the shots live.
