Should Rule 4.4 (Maximum of 14 clubs) be altered?

Its a good suggestion... Most junior sets of clubs (at least the cheapos I had as a kid) were only the odd irons (3,5,7,9,W) 1w,3w, putter... So thats 8 clubs and yes it did make club selection alot easier as compared to someone with 14 who doesn't have a consistent game.

I played a few holes for fun with my brother and nephew who got his first action on a golf course, we each got to pick one club and a putter... Was interesting.

No need in this situation to jump down OPs throat, he made a reasonable and helpful suggestion. Instead of getting caught up in gimmicks and analysis paralysis (which seems the norm in golf instruction) just getting comfortable using a club with finesse in different situations gives you confidence...

One of my biggest leaps in golf was working on a driving range, chipping out the tree balls that couldn't get plucked by the picker... Have a short iron or wedge and just pick spots all over the range to hit from junk lies of all sorts... that type of repetition really improves short game striking... Same idea, instead of thinking technology or some golf instructional pamphlet is going to save you, put in the time and just hit balls over and over again.

I agree that playing with fewer than 14 is good for practice. Heck, I carry only irons on some days and hit from the front tees.

But as an official rule? HA!

I'm not sure whats worse - this or that guy that wanted to change the size of the hole to something the size of a basketball hoop.

Could it be that children don't generate enough clubhead speed to make an appreciable difference in distance between say an 8 and 9 iron?  There's a big difference between someone that swings at 60 mph and someone that swings at 100 mph.

I don't want to go into the penalty area. I am enjoying most of the feedback. They are spoiling a reasonable reply with some irrelevant criticism. I will however refrain from stooping to their level. It really is a very commendable forum and I am prepared to turn the other cheek.

Could you explain the word 'behoove' , I know it's a typo but I can't get it... improve?

Could be but many ladies have very slow swings speeds but the manufacturers fill up their bags. Just a thought.

It's not a typo. Look it up.

And if anyone "stooped" it would be others to your level. You've lowered the bar more than anyone else so far. Please don't pretend otherwise.

Probably more due to keeping costs and price points low, a child's swing speed vs a senior or a woman may very well be comparable or close enough to challenge your point.

      Hit my tee shot just into the penalty area and barely found it. Swung hard just in case I hit it. It was slightly downhill with a heavy tailwind. I don't actually hit my 9i 170 yards.

      Right. The difference between being 120 out and 70 out for me (this is the important part) is negligible and not worth putting other risks into play off the tee.   Ok the argument against driver is that my shot cone is comically large. It puts every possible outcome into play. You can't see the green from the tee so there's a good chance I'd have to wait for it to clear which would slow down play. That's the third tee right in the middle of the firing range there. I really don't want to wait just to hit a terrible shot and I especially don't want to injure somebody. Yea I have no problem playing out of the rough short of the bunker if I'm just going to lay up short of the bunker, but I absolutely need to avoid flaring it right into the penalty area if I'm going to be laying up in the first place. As a general strategy I understand where you're coming from. But since we're specifically talking about me (this is a shot I'm going to have to hit on Saturday), I think the cost is fairly marginal. I hit the ball 8' closer on average from 50-100 than I do from 100-150 from the fairway and rough and the green success % difference is 4%. Bunker might as well be a penalty drop. Based on the data,  Here's my SG:A data compared to a 10: I honestly don't know how to use SG for decision making. That's why I was mostly looking at proximity to hole and green success rate for comparison. I mostly use SG as a way to track my progress. All good. Like I said, I appreciate the discussion. It makes me think. If I didn't want to see alternative/opposing viewpoints to my own I just wouldn't post anything. You should post it! In your own swing thread, of course. It's been a fun exercise.

      Played my first 2024 round at Pierce Lake. Boomed my first drive down #10 fairway, then slowly slipped into mediocrity. 83 (69.6/131). The high point was going 2 of 4 on sand saves. My sand game is pretty marginal but today I must have discovered the secret for a couple hours.
