I believe the rule allows you to use any reasonable object as a ball marker. There is no official size or shape limit that I know of. This topic came up earlier when someone was asking about the Scotty Cameron putt alignment ball marker thing being legal or not.

...On a side note, I will now be using a hockey puck to mark my ball.

And I will use a golf ball to mark my ball :P

I have one of those poker chips though (freebie at golfsmith) and I swear I thought I saw a PGA Tour Pro use that as his ball marker on TV too. Can't remember who though.

I know this is an older post but.....I think the chip is in the pocket of the headcover so you can feel it and know there is a pocket there. If they just put a regular (and rational) ball marker in there, it could be years before anyone not familiar with the head cover found the pocket. They had to put something in there large enough to feel through the case cover. That's just my opinion from a Marketing standpoint.

Funny I saw this thread, I just found the Odyssey poker chip while playing golf and put in my bag. I am going to use it as a ball marker unless it close to someone's line, visually its easy to spot on long putts.

Wow this thread brought out 4 new members, 3 of them never to return again and 1 being brand new. What a hot topic.

I'll have to take a look at my GF's putter headcover when I get a chance. She says she has no idea what I'm talking about so maybe it's still there.

actually it is a ball marker. according to the rules you can use any object to mark your ball as long as it doesnt move. iv layed my putter on the green to mark my ball in a tournament before.
i also hav a supersticious friend who only uses a cell phone for a mark

try to use the pin one hole jsut to see if anyone questions it (its completely within the rules dont worry) i think having a ball mark in your pocket is bad luck so i just use things i find.

A box of cereal, that is freakin' hilarious!

I used to use a poker chip back in the day. $25 chip from The Commerce Casino. I'd rather not admit to being a poker player, so I just leave it in the bag. If I happen to pull it out I'll use it. But I like using something large.

i know and have seem many people using poker chips to mark their balls with on the green. you are technically allowed to use whatever you'd like to mark your ball. as i recall a few years back in a SR tour event a player went into the clubhouse to celebrate a lead and had a few beers. a playoff was forced and he actually used a beer can/bottle to mark his ball.
