Hi

Just a quick question to the forum about insurance for golf clubs etc.  Does anyone know the best insurance companies to deal with for an all encompassing policy for golf clubs/equipment?  a policy that covers breakage, travel, stealing etc.

Thanks

According to my agent they are covered under home owners / renters insurance as long as you have receipts if they are stolen or lost in fire at your home.  Caveat is most home owners policies have a pretty large deductable so you probably won't recoup much if just your clubs are stolen.

My policy with State Farm is a stand alone, called a "Personal Articles Policy", and it includes my clubs (listed individually with replacement value for each club I own, not just the 14 in the bag), all my firearms (40+ pieces), and jewelry.  Cost is $153 a year, and I have no deductible.  When my wife lost her 10th wedding anniversary ring a few years ago, we were reimbursed for the full appraisal amount.

I too have State Farm and a rider for personal articles that cover jewerly, guns, golf clubs, laptop compters, things that can easily be transported with you.  My brother did not have this when his clubs were stolen, but his home owners insurance covered them less his $500 deductible.  He had almost $5000 worth of golf equipment in his bag, he was able to replace all that was stolen and the only clubs he paid full retail on was his Mizuno irons.

Yeah, wanna make 14 dollars the hard way?

Reviving a very old thread.

My new golf clubs cost way too much and I never really thought about an insurance rider for them.

This week we change insurance companies and when I looked at the home owner's policy, golf clubs are not covered without a rider.   I asked the agent to quote me a  price.   I believe I'd only need insurance in case they were stolen.

Is this an exception to normal insurance companies?   I guess I shouldn't complain, I save about $1k on auto and $500 on home owners so the difference will definitely pay for the change.

All my toys, other than my vehicles are covered under my home owner's policy.

If my clubs were lost, or stolen, even when traveling, my h.o. policy covers them.

There is a second policy I have that is part of my RV coverage, that "blanket" covers all the stuff in the RV should something happen.

I might suggest if you you have a h.o., or renter's policy to check with your carrier.

It's not covered at all under your homeowner's policy without a rider? That is different from mine. Mine are included as a part of my personal property coverage in my homeowner's insurance policy, even without a rider. But I would still have to meet the deductible to use the insurance.

I do have a rider to cover my wife's wedding ring, and that has no deductible. I could add a rider for my golf clubs that would have no deductible.

I have Allstate. It will probably vary by insurance carrier, and it might vary by state, too.

I believe they were covered under my previous policy.   I haven't heard back from my new company yet.

Scheduled Personal Property Declarations

For an additional premium we cover the classes of personal property indicated by an amount of insurance.  ...bla bla bla..  The section 1 deductible as shown on the declarations does not apply to this coverage.

Golfer's Equipment means golf clubs, golf clothing and golf equipment. (Excluding motorized golf carts)

Like I mentioned previously, since I'm saving a huge amount, the additional rider won't be an issue but I've not seen insurance like this before.

Did he have receipts for all his clubs? I have State Farm and was told they are covered by my home owners policy but I don't have receipts. I guess I should call my agent and have a discussion. I believe I have about a $2000 in clubs, bag, etc. And that does not cover the "extra" clubs I have in the garage, e.g. Ping G driver, four sets of irons, wedges, putters. I should also talk to him about my guitars as well come to think of it, I have six of those one worth about $3000.

I heard back from the new insurance company.   They will insure my clubs at a rate of $0.90 / $100.   They are not covered by the traditional home owner's policy.

Unless it's an explicit requirement in the policy, you don't really need receipts to get reimbursed for property that's stolen. Depending on the policy, you'd be covered for either the replacement cost of the golf clubs or the actual value of the golf clubs that were stolen. Either way, having the receipts for the clubs isn't really relevant to either of those. The driver you paid $400 for isn't worth $400 anymore, for example. It won't hurt you to have the receipts, but you don't 100% need them.

What you will need is a list of everything that lost that you submit with your claim. You can do that after the fact, but it's easier to do an inventory of what's in your house whenever you have the chance. Here's a link to a sample one: https://www.nycm.com/pdf/HomeContentsInventoryWorksheet.pdf. Your insurance company might have a similar form they could provide you with, too.

Great idea.    This is something I need to do.   I've heard of people do a video walk thru also showing the items in each room.   Either way, I believe it's important to have an inventory list in case of loss.

I actually just called up my insurance to get a quote on this, since I just replaced my irons. My insurance is Allstate, but some interesting things from that conversation:

  • My clubs are covered as personal property under my homeowners' insurance policy, but I have to pay the deductible for them.
  • Allstate requires an appraisal for a rider for golf clubs. Apparently, this is not a receipt, or whatever it costs to replace the clubs. It's the actual value of the clubs when you get the insurance (they said the place you got your clubs should have an appraisal service). But then that value is set in stone, it sounded like. So, unless you've just replaced a full bag with brand new clubs, you're not really going to be covered up to the full amount to replace the clubs.
  • The price was roughly double what @dennyjones quoted above. I was a bit surprised by that, because when I shop around for other insurance, I find that rates are nearly identical.

    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
    • I agree with @klineka & @DaveP043 above.  When a new member first joins the club they cold be told that they are not eligible for tournaments until they have an established HCP.  As you said, it only takes a few rounds.  If they do not to post HCP that was their choice and choices have consequences.  If playing in the tournament is important to them then they should step up and establish an HCP.  Maybe they miss the 1st tournament, is that a real big deal?  And if it is a "Big Deal" to them then they had the opportunity to establish the HCP. As for not knowing how to report for HCP I assume your club has a pro and they should be able to assist in getting the scores reported and I suspect out of state courses may also have staff that can assist if asked.
