CAPSULE The final entrants in the 2012 U.S. Open field will be determined today in what is arguably one of the most comprehensive and toughest examinations of  golf in the world. Nearly 1,000 players will compete for 76 places in the final field of 156 players. All players in sectional qualifying play 36 holes in one day

A total of 9,006 players entered the 2012 U.S. Open and unless they are exempt, they must qualify for the championship by advancing through local and sectional levels.

Sectional qualifying has already been conducted in Japan (May 21) and England (May 28) and the competition at the final 11 sites will determine the remainder of the championship field today. Six players advanced to the 2012 U.S. Open from Japan and 11 players advanced from the England qualifier.

Sectional qualifying follows 18-hole local qualifying events that were conducted at 109 sites between April 30 and May 17. A total of 912 players advanced to sectional qualifying.

We've gone the last 2 times it was in SoCal (I think they alternate between NoCal and SoCal).  You get a lot closer to the players and usually get to meet some of their family and friends, who are there to cheer them on.  We had a great time and got to see some excellent golf.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

I plan on going tomorrow (weather looks iffy). What advice do you have for those going?

Will get there around 7:30, called the course and pro shop said players tee off at 7.

It probably depends on the club, but what about restroom facilities?

They do nothing special. You'll use on-course ones or ones in the pro shop. There aren't even gallery ropes most places (if anywhere).

If you have a GPS bring it if it has or you can download the qualifying course.  It is fun to see the distances.  If not, see if you can buy a yardage book in the pro shop.  I've always bought a hat in the pro shop because I like having different hats and as a kind of thank you for the free admission, but that's just me.

That's a good tip. Thanks. Maybe I'll buy a sleeve of balls or something like that.

It's raining pretty heavily and there are lightning strikes. Wondering if I should call it a day. I wonder when the bad weather reschedule date is?

The River Club is a 20-minute drive from me, but it's been raining all morning, and there are few notable players in the Atlanta sectional. I have nothing to do this afternoon, but I think I'll pass on heading down there.

Right. It's really, just players playing. No galleries, no ropes, no grandstands, nno programs (tho you might be able to get a pairings/tee time sheet). It really gives a peek into the 'other side' of tour golf. Lonely.

Do we have any sandtrap pro's taking a shot at qualifying?

TaylorMade RBZ 5 & 3 Fairway Woods

Seemore Si-4 Black Nickel Putter

I went and watched the Sectional Qualifying a few years ago....I posted up on a par 3 that played over water to a tight pin (short hole...165)....the first group came through with barely a breeze and all hit it to within 20 feet....two birdies and a par......3 groups later the wind kicked up and was coming pretty good left to right and into the players....it made the shot much, much more difficult....two bogeys and a par from that group.

Made me really realize that there can be a lot of luck involved in tournament golf at times......

The thought occurs to me that today wouldn't be "the longest day in golf" if people played more quickly.

Tim Herron qualified at a course I've played often. I freakin love the US open qualifying, so much drama, and any near scratch golfer technically has a shot to qualify. Can't imagine the pressure.

Here are some photos from today's sectional in New Jersey. No action shots. Wasn't really concentrating on taking photos.
