wedge distance?

It depends on the wedges and how you swing them.  Among the scoring irons in general the lofts are 4˚ apart, and many people have ~10 yard gaps between irons, though this seems to not be true as the loft increases to GW, SW, LW territory.

Personally I'd recommend finding your favorite wedge brand and getting 52˚, 56˚, and 60˚, just cause I love my 60˚ and think it's a useful club to have in the bag.  I'd guess from your PW distance that you might have bigger than 10 yard gaps with those though.  Maybe something like 115, 100, 85 for full swings with those?  You really have to demo some clubs to know for sure.

There are unlimited options based on your game and desire to choke down to make 3/4 and 1/2 swings with your PW.   I'd bend the PW to 45* and go with 52* and 58* wedges.  Other option is leave PW at 44* and go with 48*, 52* and 56* wedges.

I have borrow a 52* 56* and 60* at the driving range. Results were 52* 110 yards 115 if I got after it. 56* 90 to 100 yards and 60* 60 to 75 yards. Don't remember the brand. Maybe that makes a difference. My irons are spot on 10 yards apart. Guess I will have to try a few different ones out. I will say I did like the 60* when I hit it right. Thanks

Those distances are normal, its about what i hit. Also brand probably wont affect distance, but could affect spin and feel. If you get a cavity back wedge, like one that comes in an iron set, then that could affect distance.

If you get three wedges from the same model, you need to be aware of the true difference in shaft length among the three.

Planning guidelines for distance differences between clubs are that + 4* in loft and + 1/2" of shaft length translates into 10-to-12 yards between clubs for a golfer of average strength.

Within iron sets, the normal shaft increment from numbered iron to iron is 1/2". When you get into iron set wedges or specialty wedges (separate from iron model), that isn't always the case. For the 2012 Vokey models, PWs (46* or 48*) shaft length is 35.75". Moving down the line from GW, SW, and LWs, shafts get 1/4" shorter by category. You get down to LW, it's 35" for the 58* and 60*, and 34.75 for high lobs.

For Cleveland wedges, the CG15 model and beyond only has 1/8" difference in shaft length between categories.

So, if you want to maintain even distance increments between wedges, you need to be aware of shaft length.

If the wedges have 1/4" shaft length differences, you might pick 50* and 56* as the first two. You might pick 60* as the third, unless you hit full shots with the 60*. When you get into lob wedges, some players find full shots go higher, but not much farther than a half swing. It's something you would have to check out as you put the "team of wedges" together.

You could always custom-trim the wedge shafts  to get 1/2" increments if you wanted. Also, what distance gaps do you want on quarter and half-swing shots? People who follow Dave Pelz plot out average partial shot distances at the range, while others just go on feel.

Focus, connect and follow through!

I'm sorry. I meant 44 degree pitching wedge

I would definitely get a 48 which you should get you to 115-120 range. From there you have some options. Personally I like 54-60, but have also seen 52-58, 54-58, 52-60, 56-60, and 52-56-60. It really depends on what you want to accomplish. Just to give you an idea of possible distances I get the following from a smooth swing: 44- 138 48- 125 54- 105 60- 85

lots of people like Vokeys.

Personally I think the Mizunos are great.  They have a nice feel to them that I enjoy.

I narrowed down my search on wedges by first picking ones that appealed to my eye, then by how they felt swingweight wise.  The next question is how much bounce?

The cavity back AW that is set to 50 degrees so I went with a 54 and 58 degree wedges to fill the gaps.  I find the 58 versatile enough for play around the green and also provide good full swing distances.

I'm not sure if its the laser milled face is grabbing and spinning the ball more or what but the CG16 60° was way shorter then I expected. Does more spin mean a little less distance? My old wedge was a cheap 58° and I figured the new 60° would be just a bit shorter in yardage. It was way shorter in yardage. I have to hit that thing so hard to get 70 yards out of it. I like it allot, I just wasn't ready for it to be so short in distance.

Sincerely, Jim

How much shorter?

44 degrees, historically is a 9 iron.  So that distance is about right.  I would imagine a true PW (48*) would go about 115 yards.  A 52* GW should get you about 105.  56* SW 95 to 100 yards.  LW 80-85 yards.

I was thinking the same thing.  My set up is a 46* PW (115), 50* AW (105), 56* Vokey (90-95) and a 60* Vokey (80-85).  It works out nicely

Agreed, that is about as good as it gets.

I was about to help you out but then you changed your Pitching wedge degree. My pitch is my 135 club but its a 47 degree. I have no problem getting my 60 degree 100 yards. I used to have a set up like this and I couldnt stand the huge gap between my 52 and 45* pitch. I went out and picked up a used cleveland 48* for 20 bucks. Eventually got tired of the huge offset on those beginner clubs that are lofted weird and got a set of "players Irons"

Call me odd but my PW is 47 (Ping g2) and I carry cleveland 588 that are 53/56, last wedge is a 60 Top Flight.

PW - 110

53 - 90

56 - 75

60 - 60 (gotta swing out of my shoes nearly but have never done this on a course)

These are full swing distances, I'm working on getting them down to a 11, 9 and 7 o'clock back swings for each. All of the clubs are new to me as of 3 weeks ago.

    • Day 12: Same as last couple days, but focus was on recentering aspect of flow. When I recenter earlier I make decent contact most swings but if I recenter late or not at all it’s a roll of the dice.
    • A couple of things.  Some of the clubs in your bag should be dropped immediately.  A 2-iron for example with what obviously seems to be a lower swing speed or possibly not great swing yet is a definite no-no.  To be hitting that 120-140 yards, which I assume includes run, is a sign that you are not getting the ball airborne at the correct angle to maximise distance.  The reason your 3 and 5 hybrid are going the same distance is that your launch angle is better with the 5.  Loft is your friend. Ideally I would suggest going to a golf or sporting store where you can hit golf balls on a simulator without being disturbed to understand your club carry distances and hopefully swing speed.  With that information we can definitely guide you better.
    • Let us be clear, unless you have proof of cheating, you just sound like a case of sour grapes.  In our club we have a guy who won club titles for many years.  Yes, he was a low single digit handicapper, but there have been quite a few others who played at his level.  Yet his mental strength and experience helped him win in many years when he shouldn't have.  Did he sandbag.  DEFINITELY NOT.  Did he just minimize his mistakes and pull out shots as and when needed.  Definitely.
    • Day 111 - Worked on my grip and higher hands in the backswing. Full swings with the PRGR.
    • First off please forgive me if this is not a proper post or not in the proper location, still learning the ropes around here. Second, it's important that I mention I am very new to the game with only about 10 rounds of golf under my belt, most being 9 holes. Only this year have I started playing 18. That being said, I am hooked, love the game and am very eager to learn and improve. To give you an idea of my skill, the last 2 18 rounds I played were 110 and 105. Not great at all, however I am slowly improving as I learn. Had been having bad slicing issues with the driver and hybrids but after playing some more and hitting the range, I've been able to improve on that quite a bit and have been hitting more straight on average. Irons have always come easier to me as far as hitting straight for some reason. Wedges have needed a lot of improvement, but I practice chipping about 20-30 mins about 3-5 times a week and that's helped a lot. Today I went to the range and started to note down some distance data, mind you I am averaging the distances based off my best guess compared to the distance markers on the range. I do not currently own a range finder or tracker. From reading some similar posts I do understand that filling gaps is ideal, but I am having a some issues figuring out those gaps and understanding which clubs to keep and remove as some gaps are minimal between clubs. Below is an image of the chart I put together showing the clubs and average distances I've been hitting and power applied. For some reason I am hitting my hybrids around the same distances and I am not sure why. Wondering if one of them should be removed. I didn't notice a huge loft difference either. The irons I have are hand me downs from my grandfather and after playing with them a bit, I feel like they're just not giving me what could potentially be there. The feel is a bit hard/harsh and underwhelming if that makes sense and I can't seem to get decent distances from them. Wondering if I should be looking to invest in some more updated irons and if those should be muscle backs or cavity backs? My knowledge here is minimal. I have never played with modern fairway woods, only the classic clubs that are actually wood and much smaller than modern clubs. I recently removed the 4 and 5 woods from my bag as I was never using them and I don't hit them very well or very far. Wondering if I should look into some more modern fairway wood options? I appreciate any feedback or advice anyone is willing to give, please forgive my lack of knowledge. I am eager to learn! Thank you.
