The ball I play and the ball I prefer are 2 different things. Typically I play Bridgestone e5+, e7+, or Wilson Zip depending on weather and course conditions. I play the e7+ in wind or when the course is dry because it's a lower trajectory ball that is longer than the other balls. The e5+ gets used in most other conditions because it's a higher trajectory ball and has urethane cover which spins more than most cheap balls. In cold weather I play the Wilson Zip because it has such a low compression, but doesn't balloon like a lot of low compression balls. I like these balls because they are all less than $30, but still perform well.

As for the ball I prefer, it would be any number of the more expensive models($40+). My favorite would probably be the Bridgestone B330-S or Callaway HX Tour 56 or even the Srixon Z-URS. I like these balls because they are softer than some of the tour quality golf balls. I have yet to try the Bridgestone B330-RX, but based on my readings I think I would like it as well (my swing is not 'tour' speed, so I think it would be a good ball for me). I really wish I could afford to play the more expensive balls as I do think there is a difference in them (at least some of them), but besides the initial cost, they also tend to scuff and damage easier, which makes them even more expensive than the cheaper balls I currently play.

I have used the Callaway HX tour for the last 2 years. Used the ix last year. I really like the ball. The spin around the greens is the main reason I like it, it seems to be the right amount for me. It also feels soft to me, which is important. Distance does not seem to be an issue. Last year I was a little inconsistent, but I was still able to launch one every now and then. Overall a great ball. I love to tinker with my equipment, so this year I am considering other balls, specifically the Bridgestone b330 rx, Prov1x and the Callaway HX bite. I rarely lose a ball, but my frugal side would love to spend less that $40 for a box(hence the HX Hot Bite). On the other hand, I really love the feel of the premium balls. For some reason I have not jumped on the Prov bandwagon, maybe this year. For along time I have not liked to look down at a ball that says Titleist. I have no idea why, just don't like the look if that makes any sense. On the flipside, I always like seeing the Callaway logo or a nike swoosh. This game does strange things to your mind.

    • We do not buy extended warranties. We will use one of our credit cards for the purchase that extends the warranty "x 2". Our thoughts are: a. if the item is a lemon, it will likely break right away and we can attempt to apply the original warranty or credit card extension. b. over the long haul, we will probably save more money by not purchasing the extended warranty and fixing/junking broken items out of our own pocket. The important thing is to keep some records of purchases so one may make a claim under the manufacturer's warranty. I recently sent back some Footjoy shoes for leaking and Footjoy did a reat job of making the claim process work very well. I had the original receipt, warrant info and box. Easy peasy.

    • This is pretty much how I look at it.  I understand there are times when the piece of mind has value. I think over the long haul I'm money ahead by never buying the extended warrantee. Hell, What do I know? I went to Ch!cago PubIic SchooIs.
