Well, since this thread has gone on this long, I will admit it is nice to know we will get some actual results.

No red wine, red meat and cheese. Black cherry juice helps. Remember to swing easy.

That's basically what my father had to cut out.

Good luck James.  My suggestion:  forget about this thread when you go.  Don't try to prove people wrong and swing out of your shoes every time.  You'll end up wasting your trackman session and all the time and money you spent.  Try to just make your playing swing and see what your numbers are.  That way there may be a bunch of internet mavens saying, "See!  I told you so", but you'll have yardages that you can carry away to lower your scores.  In the end, you are the one who matters to your improvement.  Good luck again.

The bold deserves to be repeated.

Frankly, I hope you do hit some drives that show as 300. But if you don't, don't waste the session trying to get them.

Just to clarify this, what does the OP have to actually accomplish? Does he have to consistently hit the ball all carry 300+ our just reach it carry and roll? Or does he just have to carry 300+ once or carry and roll just once? Or imo I think he has to show some level of consistently to hit it at our near 300+ with no editing.

Personally, I'm cynical at times and it's always easier to just laugh off a claim (I think all of us are, it just depends to what extent, how often and who can admit it). The problem is, most people cannot admit that they are like that.

Best of luck to you! Once you've lived through enough and have gone through enough, it's quite easy to offer up an "I'm sorry, you were right and I was wrong" statement and I will be the first one to do that for you. You're already gaining in my book by scheduling a session to begin with - but make sure you're doing it for your own game and not for the keyboard warriors out there.

i think the whole 300 carry was put in his mouth by other posters here. i don't think he ever claimed 300 all carry, i think he just said he hit some drives that have gone 300. it's been hard to follow but there have been a lot of claims he never made being tacked on.

like i brought up before, i hit a drive on a certain length hole and when i get up to it and i only have so many yards left and i subtract from the total length it has ended up over 300. that could be hole design, elevation, roll, etc., but i could say it was a 300 yard drive and it would be true.

people began to point out that hard fairways might be helping him, but he never said i hit 300+ at sea level into a strong headwind. again, just more crap thrown into his original post by people who take another's ability to hit a little white ball a long way too personally.

Put a 30mph wind behind me and I'll give you a 300 yard drive. It is the people who claim that it is their average drive that I have trouble believing them and there is no doubt that this relates to handicap. A 20 handicap could very well hit 1 300 yard drive every 25 shots. He can't average it. In fact some of his drives will be 75 yards into thick rough way right of the tee box. That is what being a 20 handicap is.

yeah, but these guys don't say straight when they say 300. guys do make a point to attack 300 claims with self-reassuring claims that they can hit 250 straight down the middle every time, which is just as big of an exaggeration as the 300 claim, but it's usually made by better golfers.

but it is the internet, so why expect any truth at all, unless you're that girl from the commercial dating the french model because "you can't put anything on the internet that isn't true."

That is not true.

Take the letter  "S". Say this was a 600 yard, fantasy Par 5 where you begin on the lower left end of the S and work to the top right. Following the fairway may be 600 yards, but cutting from the lower left to the top right may only be 240 yards. Driving the green in this fantasy, made up scenario, Par 5 is not a 600 yard drive, but a 240 yard drive.

Again, I think people brought up the fact that "clearing trees on a dog leg" doesn't mean you drove the hole's listed length. Tracking the ball from Point A through its entire path of travel to it's resting place of Point B is what you would need to do. Not go to Point B and subtract your distance from the green or look at a nearby yardage marker.

thats why when you play certain dog leg holes the card will say 350 but a gps will say 280 or whatever.

For what its worth I played in vegas this weekend and the ball really does fly further. I played a straight forward par 5 dead straight either 502 or 510 I dont remember but even call it 490. I was able to go driver 8 iron and my friend went driver 7 iron. On a short par 5 last week i went driver 5 iron over water dog leg right. So that hole wasnt playing as long because of the little dog leg but going driver 8 iron with a 175 yard 8 iron was still a 300+ yard drive. The fairways were also fairly soft. I think Jimbo truly may have been tricked into thinking he hits 300 yard shots and its very possible that he does. Would he at sea level? maybe not but that is never what he claimed. Another thing he stated from the beginning was if he were to go to the driving range and you watched him hit 20 balls he is sure 1 of them would go 300. He never claimed all carry either.

    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
