  1. 1. Thoughts on Johnny Miller (as an announcer)

    • Johnny's one of the best announcers in the game

    • Ehh... he's OK
      37
    • I hope Johnny and his nasally voice go away... forever

Miller is like your grandfather. He is stern, and says stuff completely of subject. I enjoy watching tournaments when he is in the booth. Just for the stuff he says, and I love how critical he is.

Yup! There is only one way, his way. You either like him or hate him as Harry sez. I, personally, get a kick out of him. But only in small doses. McCord and Feherty are getting better.

It won't be too long before Miller is put out to pasture and another commentator will take his place. I just hope it's not someone from the Golf Channel.

I wish I had something good to say about Miller but I don't! I can't believe I actually looked up to him back in the 70's. He was a player that was streaky but when he was on, nobody could beat him.

I've never liked him from day one in the booth and I won't miss him when he's gone.

I agree about Miller - he's definitely proving out the theory of "diminishing marginal utlility". Meaning, the more you hear, the less you want to hear it again. He used to be a lot better a few years ago - maybe the network told him to turn into a slurring antagonist for the ratings.

I felt way more strongly about Billy Packer (former NCAA CBS b-ball announcer) - man, he knew "everything" and loved to tell you about it, while adding little to the atmosphere/dialogue. I had to mute the TV in order to watch the games he was butchering.

At least John Madden is entertaining (Caliando makes a living impersonating the guy).

Johnny 'the idiot' Miller dumb quote of the ryder cup...

'he really needs to go home and work on his swing' -talking about Padraig Harrington, player of the year, british open and pga champ this year and has earned 4.3 million in 2008.

Thanks for the tip Johnny.

He does. His swing fell flat post-PGA. Johnny was speaking the truth there. He missed two cuts, won't make the Tour Championship, and sucked it up all Ryder Cup, going 0-3-1, with the 1 tie being with a partner.

And I still don't think he'll be Player of the Year.

I remember johnny had a slip in the Ryder Cup about Nick Faldo,

he said something about Faldo keeping something longer than his wives. Did anyone catch that?

Oh ya that's right, that was a bad one. Good thing he apologized about it after.

I found it funny how the other commentator didn't say anything and it went completely silent after he said that.

Miller was unbearable.

He is to golf as Billy Packer is to college basketball. A standard but became an old crusty bastard.

If you took a shot every time he said someone had an "easy putt" or "he should make this one" (when its 15 ft+), then you would be one drunk mofo today.

These are the only ones I can remember (I know there were many more):

"You don't want to comment on how the sandwich tastes before you take a bite."

  • I've got a sandwich for you Johnny. Go ahead, take a bite before you comment on it's taste:

"He's must think he's eating tall cotton."
  • Did he mix his metaphors or is he just an idiot?

"There's time enough for countin' when the dealin's done."
  • Seriously, you're quoting Kenny Rogers' "The Gambler"???
  • You couldn't have gone with " Don't count you chickens before they've hatched. "? Or, " It's not over till the fat lady sings. "
  • Or, considering the "cotton" remark above, maybe it would have been, " It's not over till the Fat Lady eats the hatching chickens. "

And one that is a spoiler if you haven't finished watching your DVR (although I noticed that somebody already posted a spoiler the millisecond the result was final )

"With Luke Donald hurt, Colin Montgomerie gone, Darren Clarke not here . . . the Euros just had their aura cut off at the ankles."
[talking about the Euro team immediately after Furyk sealed the U.S. win.]
  • Aura's have ankles? I didn't even know they had legs . . . or any sort of physical presence.

"Getting"?!?

Most announcers become prima donnas and the network executives are afraid to FIRE them because of the contracts, and the fear of "rocking the boat". Who needs announcers? Use the mute button and watch the action. There is way too much commentary during golf tournaments anyway. It is NOT a fast action sport, where the viewers need the announcers to keep up with the fast pace of play. Dottie is one of the few worth listening to, but that is because she won two Majors and was the "Heart and Soul" of the US Solheim Cup teams. How many Majors have McCord and Feherty and Tirico ever won? Dottie speaks from experience and the others speak in spite of their LACK of experience.

I don't want this to lead to off topic bickering. Rather, I just want to ake some corrections.

1. Good announcing is not predicated on having won major championships. Lanny Wadkins, winner of the 1977 PGA Championship, was a dull, uninformative announcer. Conversely, Peter Alliss, never able to win the prestigious Caret Jug (basically his only oppurtunity to win a major), has defined excellence in golf announcing for decades. Wadkins and Alliss were both great players; was Wadkins the better announcer because Wadkins won a major and Alliss didn't? No. 2. Dottie Pepper, great player though she was, has no more experience than McCord and Feherty at competitive golf. All three found success at the highest level. (Pepper, of course, was the most accomplished.) 3. "But," you argue, "Dottie Pepper competed in the Solheim Cup, and Feherty and McCord never competed in the Ryder Cup." Wrong. Feherty was a member of the 1991 European Ryder Cup squad, amassing a 1-1-1 record (includng a win over Payne Stewart in singles). He also captained Ireland's victorious 1990 Dunhill Cup team, winning the cup in a sudden-death playoff on the 17th at St. Andrew's. Clearly, Feherty knows a thing or two about team competitions. 4. The Mike Tirico argument is ridiculous. Has any lead announcer ever won a major, a Super Bowl ring, a NBA championship, etc.? Of course not.

I just remembered the other Miller comment (from Sunday I think) that cracked me up. He was commenting on Robert Karlsson's phenomenal putting and he interrupted Dan Hicks' comments

IIRC:
Hicks: "Leonard is down to Karlsson . . ."

Miller [interrupting]: "The Hot Karlsson."

I almost spit out my beverage when I heard that. (Say it out loud. If you still don't get it, trust me, you don't want to know.)

The latest issue of Golf World also blasts Miller again in its "TV Rewind" section (p.21) where author Mike Purkey either noticed the same animosity toward Miller that I did, or else he is cribbing from my posts in this thread.

He also caught a couple that I either missed or tuned out, including:
Bob Murphy: "Camilo will face a whole new bunch of wild bugs in his belly. It always happens. You're going to get nervous. You just expect it."
(author Mike Purkey's comment: "Miller then ruined the moment with:" )
Miller: "They're all dancing to La Cucaracha . . ."

    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.
