My guess is that his post-round comment was a bit revisionist. I think I said it in another thread, though maybe this one, but I bet it was something like:

Shot 1: Miraculous shot onto the green.

Shot 2: Save par.

--- But, if that doesn't work, what will happen is... ---

In other words, I would guess he thought that taking the shot offered the possibility of a major save with a risk of having to play the ricochet, and he thought that ricochet was predictable enough. Apparently he was wrong (though, who knows, maybe he did get a 1-in-1000 bounce and most of the time it would have bounced right, no way to know that.)

I know I've used that kind of logic before, and well, it doesn't work for me either...

Was it here or on WRX where was information about Tigers caddy talking with one of the greenskeepers raking the bunker, that this was the exact reason for the attempt. Dropping could cause plugged lie.
