My Swing (Jetfan1983)

Put in some work this morning on my swing. I probably filmed it a hundred times, but this DTL one was the most promising. I'm hitting a 7-iron about 50 yards here. The other videos are me doing it or not doing it to varying degrees. Man, I am really grinding out there. This is tough. But I'm fairly proud I got the picture to look like this… not a great 4 or transition, but decent I think.

I guess I'm somewhat (but not really) concerned that from FO, my hands are way behind my pivot at 6… but my swing doesn't look like this at full speed. I get the hands farther forward when the club reaches parallel to the ground, so I'm assuming it's because I'm slightly uncocking as I make the club shallow in these slower swings.

Anyway. I feel like this is going to take a while to change. I'm basically hitting just 50-70 yard 7-irons all day long. Pretty boring, but I cannot for the life of me get the picture to look like this from DTL at speed.

BTW, you guys like the new mission belt?? :-D

PS- After this practice session, I went for some Japanese for lunch and Rory McIlroy was at the same restaurant. There weren't that many people there, just a handful. He told the chef he invited Tiger, but Tiger said he was too tired to leave the house today.

That looks so good at that speed.. I have been having the same sort of issue of everything going haywire once I start adding speed.. If I can get looking like that at that speed I would be pretty happy! I think your doing some great work! Keep it up!

Thanks, Eyad! Yea, I wish I could do this at full speed. I'm concentrating so hard to get the picture to look the way it does. But appreciate the kind words. I'm swinging at like 40% in these videos.

I'm working really hard, diligently, and slowly in order to get the picture to look the way it does. And I fail a lot at it. That DTL clip was the best one I produced today. From A1 to A5, the picture looks amazing to me from DTL.

Hope your swing work goes well in the future too.

I have the same issue Constantine.  There's some switch that at above 80% my body reverts back.  Lower than 80% everything works.  I like your A8 position.  That is what I am working on now.

Question, does your ball flight change too from lower to higher speed swings?

My ball flight has been all over the map when making these changes. Mostly pulls and pull cuts. My goal is push draws.

I'm also committing to a more neutral grip (I went with super strong for a long time). Erik and Mike asked me to change it, and it's been a gradual project for me. I can hit draws easily with my old super, super strong grip, but it's more difficult with a more neutral one (it's still strong, just more where we want it to be).

But yea, to answer your question, I guess my curve is different between the speeds, but since coming back from injury, I've been hitting cuts in general no matter what the speed is. That's obviously a problem for the course, but I don't plan on playing much golf for a while. Just practice. I'm biting the bullet to make this change. I really want it to happen.

Right now I'm patiently waiting until I start seeing push draws with these slower new swings I'm making.

First off, really great job with the backswing, A4 is soooo much better.

While I agree the hands are still a bit behind the pivot, this A6 is much different than the one from late January. The hands are much closer to being in front of your right thigh and you can't see any daylight between the right arm and torso. This is where the "wall" feel has helped you get the arms/hands down more in sequence with the pivot.

Right. Especially since he's not even "trying" to do that piece, really.

Hehe. Sweet.

Alright, here are three videos from today. Holy shit this shit is frustrating as shit to practice.

Here's a full out 6-iron. I can't believe I made contact.

@Golfingdad Here's me practicing this shit is regular speed. It's a grind lol.

Lastly, here's me hitting a really nice push-draw with a driver half swing. Kinda proud of this. Sorry for the bad camera angle though.

Soooooo, the feel to get myself to shallow the club is like the worst thing ever. It feels like a root canal. Good thing though that feel isn't real! Seriously, this is such a grind. It's so hard. The urge to kill myself is only quelled by the notion that everyone else working hard to change their swing probably feels the same way sometimes.

Anyway, I'm undeterred. I'm gonna get this shit one day.

Looks great.  I like the slow rehearsals and hitting.  I've been doing stops at A5, A6 etc. but may try this too.  It looks much more smooth.

BTW, did a small family of chipmunks race across your setup in this video at 0:37 sec?

Thanks, @iacas and @mvmac . Obviously this is still extremely difficult to do. I really have no idea how long it will take to feel comfortable, but given how long I've followed your swing threads, as well as knowing my own swing and past progresses, I'm assuming months at least. But that's okay. Your replies are a huge boost to my motivation to keep at it because it really is frustrating. That said, it's cool to see the picture change, and I'm excited for what I may be able to do on the course in the future.

Yea, since the swing itself is a dynamic motion with no starting and stopping at the various check points, I try to keep the practice motions I make as dynamic as possible so it translates better when hitting the ball. I think both styles work though and I do change it up, but I tend to do the stopping at 2, 3, 4, 5, etc. positions when I do mirror work at home. That's sort of where I build the initial confidence that the feel produces a different picture, and when I'm on the range, you see me trusting that and just going with it in a more dynamic movement.

And at 0:37, those were two butterflies chasing each other. Scared the bejeezus out of me :-D .

But yea, keep in mind, I shank, thin, and fat the ball a lot making this change, so when that happens to you, I'm right there with you.

I tried it in front of the mirror at lunch. You're right, I like doing both. Do the stop positions then gradually smooth it out.  I will try it this weekend on the range.

Looking awesome! I can't wait to see my own picture change like this. You really give me hope that it is actually possible to go from OTT to inside - out Can't wait to hear about the low scores!

Oh boy. I got the badge now. Thanks @billchao ! I guess I'm now contractually obligated to continue practicing intelligently lest I be subjected to legal action from TST's mob of attorneys. :w00t:

This is pretty cool though. Thanks, @mvmac and @iacas ! Won't let you down!

Yea, keep in mind… I'm still shocked I even made contact with that full six iron swing. But yea, it's definitely possible. It just takes time. As we both know, this game is brutal. :-D

I'll keep grinding away though. I'm still very much in the "crawl" phase of this. I wish I had a timetable for how long this will take to feel good enough to "just do," but I don't. Given how long it's taken me to change things in the past, I'm guessing a minimum of eight weeks, and that's under extremely optimistic and unlikely circumstances.

But sometimes, I guess you gotta just do boring stuff that's difficult to do on the range and in front of the mirror at home if you want to ever truly have fun out on the course. So that's what I'm gonna do.

@JetFan1983 , there's a problem with your thread, I can't find the donate button for The Jet Plan, lol. Great changes and imho, I think your progress is pretty speedy if you ask me.

    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.

    • Honestly, unless there's something about that rough there that makes it abnormally penal or a lost ball likely, this might be the play. I don't know how the mystrategy cone works, but per LSW, you don't use every shot for your shot zones. In that scatter plot, you have no balls in the bunker, and 1 in the penalty area. The median outcome seems to be a 50 yard pitch. Even if you aren't great from 50 yards, you're better off there than in a fairway bunker or the penalty area on the right of the fairway. It could also be a strategy you keep in your back pocket if you need to make up ground. Maybe this is a higher average score with driver, but better chance at a birdie. Maybe you are hitting your driver well and feel comfortable with letting one rip.  I get not wanting to wait and not wanting to endanger people on the tee, but in a tournament, I think I value playing for score more than waiting. I don't value that over hurting people, but you can always yell fore 😆 Only thing I would say is I'm not sure whether that cone is the best representation of the strategy (see my comment above about LSW's shot zones). To me, it looks like a 4 iron where you're aiming closer to the bunker might be the play. You have a lot of shots out to the right and only a few to the left. Obviously, I don't know where you are aiming (and this is a limitation of MyStrategy), but it seems like most of your 4 iron shots are right. You have 2 in the bunker but aiming a bit closer to the bunker won't bring more of your shots into the bunker. It does bring a few away from the penalty area on the right.  This could also depend on how severe the penalties are for missing the green. Do you need to be closer to avoid issues around the green?  It's not a bad strategy to hit 6 iron off the tee, be in the fairway, and have 150ish in. I'm probably overthinking this.
