He was playing fine, and then on like the 3rd hole he tweaked his lower back.

He's still playing good right now, hopefully he will finish fine. But he needs a chiropractor right now. LOL

During his press conference he mentioned that he woke up with lower back pain and GC had some video of him trying to loosen it up before he teed off, so he went into the round with the pain.

What about the left knee?i thought i saw him favoring it...

Radiated pain maybe? Or one side of the lower back hurting more, which made it harder to walk on the left side? Or just that a painful lower back makes it tougher to walk in general. He says he's going to sleep on the floor tonight.

I suffer from lower back pain every now and again.  It can definitely make you walk as if favoring one leg.  At times, it can force me to drag my right leg behind me like Igor.

Roberto Castro's hole in one was so sweet. Hole 14, 154 yard jump shot right in the hole, no bounces. I read the shot was 155 yards but it said 154 right on the TV when he hit it.

ESPN said Tiger blamed the bad back on his "soft hotel mattress".

You would think with all the money on the line. These athletes would make sure they have access to a sleep number mattress.

12 shots tougher?  Hard to believe, unless Pat is saying how much higher you or I would have scored.  Perez was only 4 shots higher on Friday and scrolling through the leaderboard I only saw 1 player who was as much as 10 strokes higher (Harmon 65-75).  Maybe for a certain portion of the draw the course played tougher, but the low score Friday was 65 with a high of 79 compared to 64/81 on Thursday.  I know they likely have it somewhere but it would be interesting to look at the ave morning/afternoon score each day, but I tink too many guys scored within 4 shots of their first round to have had the course playing anywhere near that much tougher.

I thought I remember hearing/reading many years back that Tiger actually took a moving van/truck to many tournaments that had his own bed in it...guess there was no truth to that rumor or he didn`t do it this week.

Is Nick Watney using one of Badds.com's old putters? It is an SC with A.B. stamped on the face. There was a close up of it today on the 14th.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

I play Bethpage all the time (I live on Long Island), although not the black, usually the blue or the green, so I know something about the course. I was at The Barclays on Friday, I too followed Tiger and Rory for a while. Saw Tiger hurt his back in that sand trap.

One thing you don't get from watching it on TV is the elevation changes, the hills and valleys these guys are playing through! They make it look easy, but hitting those shots when the ball is above or below you feet, or the uphill and downhill lies, to elevated green...... it is tough!

I'm playing the black in October when my brother comes up for a visit. He is a scratch golfer and wants to play it. I'm worried, you have to bring your "A" game and not let up. There are hole where you have to carry your drive 220, which for me is a problem. I guess I bring a lot of extra balls, LOL.

Cooke:

What's your take on some of what we've been hearing about with regard to fans there and the reactions they are giving players during play? It's getting some play on TGC and on CBS.

Tiger appears to be collapsing.  Unfortunate.  I hope he's not really hurt.

It's so strange to see Tiger look like a journeyman on the weekends.

    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
