Should I play ProV1 or ProV1x?

There is a definite difference to the two models, but like Sean alluded to, it may be hard to tell the difference. That is until you putt with them. The Pro V1 will come off softer and if I didn't spin them too much with the irons, I would be playing them over the Pro V1X.

To answer your original post:  I like the ProV1 a bit better because I can get longer irons like the, 7 & 6 , to stop on the green with V1.  The V1X is good too, but doesn't stop as well.  The lower tier balls from Titleist, NXT etc, will have less stopping power.  It makes a difference for me because then I know if I can control the distance, I don't have to play a lot of roll out when hitting the green.

I haven't played the other balls mentioned above and will not pass judgment on them.  I have not observed much difference in distance at all between the ones above either.  Nor did I notice any to be worse for better with the driver.  Also, when the ball is scuffed, it seems to play fine.  The ProV1 seems a bit more durable to me than the NXT, etc.

I like the advice above about finding a ball to fit your game.  Even at slower swing speeds, you want the ball to stop on the green to improve your scores.  My driver swing speed is around 90-93 and I hit my 7 iron ~150 yards carry.

It old enough to include the latest ball technology.

And here is a little light reading for all those of you (us) who play balls that others bought originally:-

Might cause a change of heart, or at least give you something other than your (our) swing to blame.

Well, your reasoning for favoring the stopping power of the ProV1 may be my exact reason for favoring the Pro V1x...

I need the extra roll... Except for the tee, I can't get a ball to go much farther than 160 yards right now... And I actually have noticed... I can stop a ProV1, but a ProV1x tends to give me a little extra distance... This way I can aim for the front of the green (closer, ergo easier shot for me) and roll to victory...

I know it's not the "pro" way to do it, but given my power right now, It may be the way to go.

It sounds like you would benefit from a ball aimed at much lower swing speeds than the balls you're waffling over.

Okay, that's another vote for low compression golf balls... :)

Have you guys read the latest Titleist ProV1 magazine ad.  They are now made for everyone's game for the low handicapper to the high handicapper as the ball will compress the same way, regardless of swingspeed.  I'm just the messenger.. see for yourself. Double-click on the picture to read the ad.

I've been playing the Srizon Soft Feel and they feel just as good..seriously  To me it has to feel good..regardless of distance.

Thank you for that Maverick... I especially love the painfully sarcastic article written about it...

"Now you too can waste four bucks a ball like the pros do! Oh wait, they don't, because they hitt'em straight."

I think I'll favor the proV1x after all. I really do notice a difference in the spin roll... The proV1 stops, the prov1x rolls a bit...

OR, perhaps hole location on the green could determine my choice and I'll carry some of both! HaHA!

And Titleist would have us all play them all the time because they are more than twice the price. Go figure, as you guys say, when they are extolling the virtues of a Tour spec' ball to high handicappers with low swing speeds.

    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
