  1. 1. Would Snedeker Trade the Fed Ex Cup for a Green Jacket?

There was a thread posted last month discussing the importance of the Fed Ex Cup versus the majors.  Seems most felt the FEC would never equal or surpass the majors in importance.  So, here's the question, If Snedeker was asked,  "would you trade the FEC for a Green Jacket" how would he answer?

As a side note, I love Snedekers pace of play.

Yes - he has plenty of money.

But a green jacket is priceless ... and it brings in money.

Green Jack in a heartbeat.  Winning a tournament with 30 of the best players is good but it is no where near as impressive as winning one with ~100 (after you take out amateurs, winners past primes,...).  Besides the green jacket is probably worth more money long term.

I can't imagine that any PGA Tour player would rather have the Fedex title than a Master's win. Can anyone name the Fedex winners for the last 5 years? Can you name the Master's winner's over the same time period?

I agree that a Masters is better for a variety of reasons including return invites to Augusta

Off the top of my head, I think after seeing the telecast yesterday, I know all the Fed Ex, but may miss a Masters or two

I still reckon $11.4 million goes quite a long way.

If he was short on cash the $11+M will help but in terms of his golf legacy the win yesterday won't look much different than his other PGA Tour wins.   I'd guess initially a pro athlete wants the cash but once their established it becomes more about leaving their mark in the sport.   Maybe in the future the FEC will gain in status and if not the 5th Major, become something close to it.

No kidding. How could anyone say with certainty that someone would give up $10 million dollars? Do players like Snedeker and Dufner seem consumed by the majors? What does one major do for a person's legacy? Are Steve Jones or Todd Hamilton thought of more highly than Lee Westwood or Adam Scott?

No major removes you're Hall of Fame chances, if that means anything to these guys.

Without his Master's win, Freddy doesn't get into Hall of Fame - barely got in anyway with 51% of vote (below the minimum % - but he was the highest guy above 50%).

$10 mil - Masters win nets you  $1m and exhibitions and endorsements to make a lot of that $10 mil back. Besides, Snedeker made $5 mil just this year...

So do you want to be Bubba or Snedeker?

I guess it doesn't matter which I'd want, but as a person I'd lean toward Sneds. The OP was asking if Snedeker would trade a green jacket for the FedEx win. He's nowhere near HOF level yet, even though he's about to play in his first Ryder Cup and looks to be rounding into form in his career. I voted "no" because it's closer to "I don't know" which is my real answer. Until Brandt logs onto this site and says otherwise, I'll stick with "I don't know".

It's really, really hard to say no to $10,000,000.  Sneds may have made $5mil this year, but that's half a career's worth of cash for most guys that see the tour.  To turn away double that amount in a day, based on a potential for "legacy" seems pretty iffy.

So, how much is the green jacket worth?  Let's say that Snedeker is on par with Mike Weir:  he's had a phenomenal year, he'll have an above average year next year, and then maybe fade into 115th in the world obscurity.  (Just for argument sake--I'm not commenting on Sned's potential.)  So how much is that green jacket going to be worth to that golfer?  He'll get a spike in endorsements for a couple of years, and some appearance fees.  He'll get to play in the Grand Slam, which will be worth a few hundred thousand.  He'll get to come back to the Masters for the next 25 years, probably make the cut (in a weak field) 2/3 of the time, and cash at least one decent paycheck every year that he wouldn't have access to without the green jacket.

Well, y'a'll have made persuasive points. Golfers are independent contractors - there are no guarantees.

Upon further review, I think his wife would ask him to take the $10 mil, and he would do so.

He does have a primary responsibility towards his wife and daughter, and his family.

He hopes for the Masters Win.

Why are we being asked what someone else would do in a situation that could never possibly eventuate?

These hypotheticals are getting more and more absurd.

Why not just be happy for Snedeker? It was only YESTERDAY that he won.

Already, people havev to start inane polls where they're are basically questioning the importance/validity of his achievement.

Just be glad it wasn't Furyk Or Watson.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

Shorty, the question is a follow-up to a previous thread posted about the importance of the FEC  which garnered quite a bit of interest and comments among the SandTrap audience.  We are all happy for Snedeker. And it was yesterday that he won.  It is still fresh in everyone's mind so the timing is perfect to ask a question about the importance of the FEC.  What you like to discuss if not the FEC?

I have absolutely no clue what Snedeker would do, but for me it would all depend on the situation (financial, majors/tournaments won, etc.).

    • @boogielicious and I are definitely in for the Stay & Play and will need the extra night's stay on Friday. I don't know what the plans are for our group on Friday but even if we don't make it for dinner with the rest of the Friday arrivals, I'll be more than happy to meet up somewhere for a beer or something.
    • Taking your dispersion and distance in consideration I analyzed the 4 posible ways to play the hole, or at least the ones that were listed here. I took the brown grass on the left as fescue were you need to punch out sideways to the fairway and rigth of the car path to be fescue too.  Driver "going for the green"  You have to aim more rigth, to the bunker in order to center your shotzone in between the fescue.  Wood of 240 over the bunkers I already like this one more for you. More room to land between the fescue. Balls in the fescue 11% down from 30% with driver. Improve of score from 4.55 to 4.40. 4 iron 210 yards besides the bunkers.    Also a wide area and your shot zone is better than previous ones. This makes almost the fescue dissapear. You really need to hit a bad one (sometimes shit happens). Because of that and only having 120 yards in this is the best choice so far. Down to 4.32 from 4.40. Finally the 6 Iron 180 yards to avoid all trouble.    Wide area an narrow dispersion for almost been in the fairway all the time. Similar than the previous one but 25 yards farther for the hole to avoid been in the bunkers. Average remains the same, 4.33 to 4.32.  Conclusion is easy. Either your 4iron or 6 iron of the tee are equaly good for you. Glad that you made par!
    • Wish I could have spent 5 minutes in the middle of the morning round to hit some balls at the range. Just did much more of right side through with keeping the shoulders feeling level (not dipping), and I was flushing them. Lol. Maybe too much focus on hands stuff while playing.
    • Last year I made an excel that can easily measure with my own SG data the average score for each club of the tee. Even the difference in score if you aim more left or right with the same club. I like it because it can be tweaked to account for different kind of rough, trees, hazards, greens etc.     As an example, On Par 5's that you have fescue on both sides were you can count them as a water hazard (penalty or punch out sideways), unless 3 wood or hybrid lands in a wider area between the fescue you should always hit driver. With a shorter club you are going to hit a couple less balls in the fescue than driver but you are not going to offset the fact that 100% of the shots are going to be played 30 or more yards longer. Here is a 560 par 5. Driver distance 280 yards total, 3 wood 250, hybrid 220. Distance between fescue is 30 yards (pretty tight). Dispersion for Driver is 62 yards. 56 for 3 wood and 49 for hybrid. Aiming of course at the middle of the fairway (20 yards wide) with driver you are going to hit 34% of balls on the fescue (17% left/17% right). 48% to the fairway and the rest to the rough.  The average score is going to be around 5.14. Looking at the result with 3 wood and hybrid you are going to hit less balls in the fescue but because of having longer 2nd shots you are going to score slightly worst. 5.17 and 5.25 respectively.    Things changes when the fescue is taller and you are probably going to loose the ball so changing the penalty of hitting there playing a 3 wood or hybrid gives a better score in the hole.  Off course 30 yards between penalty hazards is way to small. You normally have 60 or more, in that cases the score is going to be more close to 5 and been the Driver the weapon of choice.  The point is to see that no matter how tight the hole is, depending on the hole sometimes Driver is the play and sometimes 6 irons is the play. Is easy to see that on easy holes, but holes like this:  you need to crunch the numbers to find the best strategy.
