Sean O'Hair was raving about these new TaylorMade irons, yet to b given a name.  Notice the slot on the sole of the clubs, maybe Tour RocketBallz irons?

Is that the Black Mamba Iron?

It looks like someone peeled off the cavity badge.

A slot in the sole? Must make for better feel and higher MOI

Is that an actual slot in the sole, or is it filled with something (like on those old Nike CCi cast irons)?

I have a hard time keeping dirt from permanently enbedding itself in the etched club number on the bottom of all of my irons.  Seems like this would be a great hassle as well.

And the design on the back is different.  Looks like a personalization type of thing rather than standard.  Seems like you would lose customers who don't really want zebra clubs in their bag.  Maybe they are "skins" like people stick on their cell phones nowadays?  Can I put a Chargers bolt on the back of mine?

the zebra/camo look is not part of the club design...its just a way of "hiding" the iron right now since its not released.

I think it's an actual slot, but not sure.  Just had time to take a couple quick pics and didn't get a close enough look.  But I think TMAG has been experimenting with similar technology that's in the RBZ fairway wood.

Mike, I'd like to "pre-apply" to be the first member-reviewer of these when they come out.

Ha!  This is awesome!  (However, love is a strong word - symbol - just because I think he's better than "the third baseman.")

But if Mike is going to send me these irons (he hasn't said no yet, so I'm going to take that as a yes) then I will happily put these stickers on them.

Ummm... I think it is a cool concept.  But I'll pass.  The last thing I want is to have a 6i shot from say 180 to 185.... And then all of the sudden rocket one off the face and it goes 200.

With my 3W... If I hit it an extra 10 to 15yds hitting a hot face doesn't penalize me as much from 240 to 250 out... But if I do that with an iron shot when I'm really trying to score... It could be catastrophic to my score card.

I could possibly see doing it only in my 3i (I don't carry one any longer - I have a hybrid)...Or 4i??  But below that... I need more precise carry distances.  And the speed slot technology just seems like it can create additional variables that I'm not willing to bring into play.  Like a wedge from 120yds.  Hell no.

Looks like my daughter "customized" those irons with a magic marker. Sorry Sean.

Looks like TM have a bit of a marketing faux pas on their hands... Everywhere I look, about 50% of the posters seem to think this is the real decal. They made this clear if you read the fine print; its actual design is obscured by the zebra decal. It will look nothing like this at launch, TM want to keep the back's look a secret.

They should have just released the damn product shot instead of "leaked prototypes". It's not like it would affect their sales; in fact I'd bet they could make plenty of preorders and have the next model announced before this one's released to make extra money. I know TM has good reason to think golfers are gullible idiots, but this is really insulting our intelligence. And judging by all the people who have no clue these are actually censored, it's for good reason.

You don't think they knew exactly what they were doing?

Its a real slot in the bottom of the club, i think its interesting. It looks like it will add a great deal of feel to the club, since it makes the face uniform from top to bottom, but also keep the weighting low, it looks like an interesting idea. I hope they sell a cleaning tool, it looks to thin for a tee to clean :p

They knew they were releasing the shots and pretending it was a leak. But people keep thinking the zebra design is final instead of a tease, which is a bit of a backfire since they obviously want us to be all "OMG I wonder what's beHInd ThAt LaBeL!!!!!!" Instead, most of us are like "OMG, that stripe pattern is stupid!" Wrong kind of buzz. They created an interesting phenomenon with the RBZ, about half the people hated the name. Ditto with white drivers. But that was a bit different, this is an attempt to be coy and keep us guessing, but instead people are taking it at face value and dismissing it, especially in other places. Most of the readers here tend to read the description a bit better but there were still one or two who didn't get it.

in product marketing there is not wrong buzz, they want people to talk about the irons, that's happening.  Remember when Rocketballz was first announced, all the discussions about the name and how stupid it was.  TaylorMade knows how to create hype.

    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.

    • Day 106 - Worked on chipping/pitching. Focus was feeling the club fall to the ground as my body rotated through.
    • Honestly, unless there's something about that rough there that makes it abnormally penal or a lost ball likely, this might be the play. I don't know how the mystrategy cone works, but per LSW, you don't use every shot for your shot zones. In that scatter plot, you have no balls in the bunker, and 1 in the penalty area. The median outcome seems to be a 50 yard pitch. Even if you aren't great from 50 yards, you're better off there than in a fairway bunker or the penalty area on the right of the fairway. It could also be a strategy you keep in your back pocket if you need to make up ground. Maybe this is a higher average score with driver, but better chance at a birdie. Maybe you are hitting your driver well and feel comfortable with letting one rip.  I get not wanting to wait and not wanting to endanger people on the tee, but in a tournament, I think I value playing for score more than waiting. I don't value that over hurting people, but you can always yell fore 😆 Only thing I would say is I'm not sure whether that cone is the best representation of the strategy (see my comment above about LSW's shot zones). To me, it looks like a 4 iron where you're aiming closer to the bunker might be the play. You have a lot of shots out to the right and only a few to the left. Obviously, I don't know where you are aiming (and this is a limitation of MyStrategy), but it seems like most of your 4 iron shots are right. You have 2 in the bunker but aiming a bit closer to the bunker won't bring more of your shots into the bunker. It does bring a few away from the penalty area on the right.  This could also depend on how severe the penalties are for missing the green. Do you need to be closer to avoid issues around the green?  It's not a bad strategy to hit 6 iron off the tee, be in the fairway, and have 150ish in. I'm probably overthinking this.
