I have only taken golf seriously (as in I want to improve a LOT) for around 6 months. I've swung a club off and on for 25+ years, played now and then in the military with some friends who were a lot better than me but never actually played regularly until May of this year.

The mess I'm in right now is lifting my head to watch ball flight. I'm not sure what triggers it but I know I do it and it cause short/thin shots like mad. When I do this I swing out to in, top the ball etc and there goes my confidence for the day, when I concentrate on it and keep my head on the ball through the swing and follow through, I get good distance, good divot, and the ball goes generally where I want it to but I constantly slip and find my head chasing the swing.

Anyone else have an almost permanent swing fall they are trying to overcome?

For a long time I found a push.  Fixed my weight shift and my release and now I fight a low hook.  Right now Im working on adopting turning against a braced left side and using a reverse-k and it helps but sometimes I still revert to bad habits and my low hook comes back.

I tend to sway backwards a bit during my backswing. Or I don't make a deep/complete turn going back. I try hard to overcome them but they always find a way to creep back in!

I constantly fight a back swing that's too long, a push-fade from not getting the club face closed at impact, and generally over swinging.  Have had various other troubles that nagged for long periods of time but have fixed many of them, or at least worked on fixing them enough that other problems have taken their place!

When I lift my head, I flip BAD, my chasing the ball with my eyes compounds into so many other flaws it's absolutely atrocious.

I had such an up and down round this afternoon it was painful, 1 birdie, 4 pars, and 8 penalty strokes caused by..... lifting my head.

I botched 2 drives on a hole that's up hill with a water carry and OOB on the right, ALWAYS gets in my head because I need to hit if pretty far to clear the water but if I try to crush it I always push right and there is OOB so I try to find a happy medium, 1 OOB, 3 went swimming, and 5 was perfect ...

Did the same thing on a par 5 with a water carry to the green on the 3rd stroke. 152 yards to the pin, easy 7i swing, nope, came up both times topping the ball and dropped right in the water about 130. Walked onto the green hitting 7 and so rattled I three putted with TWO lip outs. Thank god that was 18 hahaha. At least there's tomorrow.

I lose spine angle,  duck my head on the back swing, slide back only my right side, bring the club inside, get stuck, and hit a push (push slice sometimes with the driver) or a hook...

I am working on maintaining my spine angle, it is helping my balance, posture, ball striking... I believe this flaw goes all the way back to when i started playing at 13 years old and trying to hit the ball farther by swinging harder.

Yes.  Under pressure, or when I'm unsure, my arms come completely unconnected from my body, producing a very strange sawed off follow through where the club ends up horizontal about chest high.  This produces a nasty line drive hook.  It creeps in from time to time and then seems to go away.  Its like getting a cold.

I sometimes pause too long at the top, then everything suddenly disconnects. If the swing goes well, I feel like someone else hit it. Does this happen to anyone else as well?

At least I'm honest with my scoring and don't have to make an excuse every shot as to why I'm 25 strokes off my norm.

Monday afternoon round, my irons were fighting me so bad the 2 GIR's/Pars I managed to hit were actually surprising to me. I hate days like that. If I don't make a move in the right direction my handicap is about to jump up to a 25/26 again. I was consistently shooting high 80's until last month when the train came off the track and I haven't seen a round better than 95 since. Today would have been a 92 without the idiotic 8 strokes I lost to penalties that should have never occurred.

It's consistent in 2 places, the driving range and a layup on a par 5 to put me in gap wedge distance. If I have a 145-155 par 3, I'll usually choke, a 145-155 approach shot, I'll choke, anytime I'm approaching the green I seem to choke. Once I get on I'm pretty decent with the putter and can typically 2 putt everything with the occasional 1 putt or blow up 3-4 putt but I lose all my stroke by rarely GIR'ing a hole. Yesterday I GIR'd 3 on the back nine but if I could learn to keep my head down my GIR would go up and my handicap would drop. Stress makes me want to see the ball I think. Every other sport I've played the more pressure I put on myself the better I did and the more drive it gave me but that isn't working well in golf.

    • Makes sense.  Like I said, I wouldn't have been upset at their original offer either, and based on the fine print it seems like they've held up their end of the deal.
    • If you've only had to adjust retroactively one time in 8 years and have around 5 people each year without handicaps, that's like 40-50 people total so it sounds like you're doing a pretty good job. I think your questions give enough to go off of. This might be a good way to get new people to actually post a few scores during the 6 weeks leading into the first event. Something like "New members will be eligible for tournament money once they have at least 3 posted rounds in GHIN" or something like that. If they can get 3 rounds in prior to their first event, then they're eligible. If not, they'll soon become eligible after an event or two assuming they play a little bit outside of events.
    • This is a loooooong winded narrative so if you don't like long stories, move on. 😉 Our senior club typically gets about 25 new members each year. We lose about 25 members each year for various reasons (moved to FL/AZ, disabled, dead, too expensive). Of the new members, usually 20 have an active GHIN handicap. About 5 each year do not have a GHIN handicap. When they join our club, we give each member a state association membership that includes GHIN handicapping services. We play a series of handicapped tournaments over the summer. When we sign up a new member who does not have a GHIN handicap, we attempt to give them an estimated index until they have sufficient scores posted to have an actual GHIN index.  Our first event typically is around May 15 so, in theory, a new member has about 6 weeks to post a few scores. Posting season in the Mitten starts April 1. Inevitably, several of the unhandicapped individuals seem  to either not play until the first tournament or can't figure out how to enter scores (hey, they are seniors). That situation then leads to my contacting the new member and asking a series of questions: a. Did you ever have a GHIN handicap? If yes, which State and do you recall what it was? b. Do you have an alternate handicap through a non-GHIN handicap service or a league? c. What do you think your average score was last year (for 9 or 18) d. What was your best score last year? Where did you play and which tee was used? e. What do you consider a very good score for yourself? Based on their responses I attempt to give them an index that makes them competitive in the first couple events BUT does not allow them to win their flight in the first couple events. We don't want the new members to finish last and at the same time, we don't want someone with a "20" playing handicap to win the third flight with a net 57. In the event some new member did shoot a net 57, we also advise everyone that we can and will adjust handicaps retroactively when it is clear to us that a member's handicap does not accurately reflect their potential. We don't like to adjust things retroactively and in the 8 years I have chaired the Handicap Committee, we have only done it once. So here are the questions to the mob: Any ideas how to do this better? Any questions one might ask an unhandicapped individual to better estimate their index/handicap? Would it be reasonable to have a new player play once (or more?) without being eligible to place in the money?
