It depends. I can hit ~100 yards with my 52, PW, or 9 iron.

Ditto for me too

I prefer to avoid if I can because it's more of a feel wedge /9iron

I rather be 120 yards or inside 75 yards.

Interesting. I'm thinking a shorter swing means more control for most here....

So with that 56, that's a very lofty 100 yards?

Very lofty. That's why some people are recommending setting it back in the stance and an abbreviating the finish like Phil Mickelson's technique for punch shots to lower the flight.

It just find it really curious why I am getting so many strong responses from @No Mulligans and @SavvySwede without any concrete examples why what I am stating does not make sense to them? Very strange. . .

Yes, I was going to request a merger of this topic to your thread, but just got caught up in the subject. . .

My 9i (46*) is 100-110. Easy clean strike fits well, with enough spin to stop well on any but a rock hard green.

This is a fine topic, most threads have ignored approaches in the range of 150-75. Very important to be accurate here, IMHO. :-D

I use a variety of clubs but more often a 3/4 PW. A full gap or sand wedge can work too depending on wind and if I need to carry the whole way.

Standard 100 yard shot is between my SW(90yds) and GW (110) so I choke down a little on the GW and make a 3/4 length swing.

If i choke down to the bottom of the grip of my g30 9 iron and swing normally, trackman says it carries 100 yards. So far, on the course it seems to be correct.

My PW is about 120 and my full SW is about 100, so depending on how I am hitting either one of those.  Of course, in a situation where those clubs won't do or I want or need to hit a different type of shot, then whatever is needed for that (5 wood onwards I guess).

    • It's all good, man. I appreciate the discussion.   The hole slopes right, towards the penalty area. That's the part just past the cart path that isn't mowed. You can land a ball on the fairway that ends up in it if the ground is firm enough.  Everything that's brown in the satellite image isn't rough. It's fescue, which even during this time of year is tall enough that just finding a ball in it can be hard. Bunkers might as have red stakes around them - I read that in a book, once. So having set that table, here's what the shot cone looks like if I try to play for what you're suggesting: I just don't see that as the optimal play. I need to get out of there with no worse than 5, not try to make 3 and end up with 6 or more. It's a short hole and my strength is in my iron play. I'm actually oddly not much better from 50-100 yards than I am from 100-150 yards. It's like a 4% difference in green success rate and 8' closer in proximity. I don't see that as worth putting trouble into play off the tee for.
