Does the Orange whip promote a certain type of shoulder movement? Level vs. a tilted movement?

Thank you for the kind words, both Mandy and I are excited about our future with The Sand Trap.

As far as what kind of shoulder turn it promotes: it does not promote either one. It will help with your flexibility, completion of your turn and the sequence of motion coming out of the backswing into the downsing, however whether you are flat or tilted does not necessarily matter, just that you swing in good balance, rhythm and tempo. Does that answer your question?

In response to an earlier post on how it works, there are a few drills that we promote however the most common one is this:

Set up with the Orange Whip in the address position hovering it just above the ground. Start making small swings back and forth very slowly. As you get comfortable, allow the momentum of the Whip to carry you up into your full swing. Keeping the Whip in a constant motion from one swing to another, make about 10-12 swings in repetition waiting for the momentum at the top of the backswing and on the follow through. As long as you can stay balanced, you are improving your tempo, core strength and flexibility, balance, footwork and sequence of motion.

Please let us know if you have any other questions!

Dan

Don't we all ...

I've owned the Whip for over a year - was not using it as intended and had put it away. After seeing this thread, I went back to their website, reviewed the suggested plan, and used it this weekend on the range. I was lacking the gradual buildup to the swing and having the sensitivity - the feel - to what the Whip does - so I slowed it down and built up the momentum, felt the wrists, feet, etc. If you're too mechanical and want more sensitivity and trust in your ability to relax during the swing - the Whip does it. I also think it shows you where you build up speed - the so-called whip - you've got to be sensitive to what it does and try not to overpower the Whip. It does more, but I'll explore its uses as I go through their site.

This seems similar to a drill I heard about using a thick nylon rope... does this tool mimick that same concept, and if so, how does it improve upon it?

Yes, the concept is similar to the heavy rope swing drill, to assist the user in sequencing their arms and body. But the differences are the Orange Whip Trainer has a extremely flexible shaft, but not a collapsible material like a rope. Also, the Orange Whip has a weighted orange ball where the club head would be and a counterweight on the butt-end of the grip. These unique characteristics of the Orange Whip allow the user to swing the devise back and forth in repetition, therefor developing an on-plane athletic golf swing much more effectively than a heavy rope.

I am reviewing the product as we type this.  I'll be doing a full review after thoroughly testing it out, however, I will say to this point I am impressed with what the product does.

Are you testing both the Whip and the Peel or just the Whip? Looking forward to your feedback.

    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
