I've been Playing Golf for: 3 to 4 years.

My current handicap index or average score is: 19.9

My typical ball flight is: High

The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: See any flaws, is this swing considered laid off in back swing?

Hey Gofas,

I think everyone could benefit from a little more info about your game. Where did this shot go? Is that a pretty typical result? What are your misses typically (curving right or left, starting right or left, a combo of any of those)? I see that you are about a 20 handicap, what do you feel are your strengths and weaknesses? Hence, what about your ballflight are you looking to improve upon?

Sorry for the barrage of questions, but I think the answers to these will allow everyone to better assess your issues.

On my birthday almost a year ago I started to get serious about understanding golf. Shortly after that time I started recording my scores for my ghin at my local course. After 10 rounds I got a Hcp of 26. Average score 105. Now almost a year later it's at 20 a enrage score of 100. Now it's trending down and most games I'm scoring in the nineties. Just other day I had a new low score of 83. What has helped game tremendously in recent rounds is proper chip and run techniques. My short iron play is great from 160 in which before was about 130 in. My miss with short mid irons is a pull which on the course will land me on the fringe which does not scare as bad now with improved chipping skills. My drives are around 220 to 280, average is 244. Now if I want to play it safe off the t box I'll use a 3 wood (205-220) or even my 4 iron (190-205) which I do well with for accuracy. 2 months ago just on a hunch from self study of my game I bought some used burner tour irons with regular flex and was so glad I did. I swing EZ now now and have more control and a little better with distance consistency with each club. I want the same swing for every club. With my old stiff flex shafts I did not get the feel and load kick that i have with these R flex clubs. I used to slice however now for the life of me I can't slice/ fade when I would like too. My putting average is now 2.2 and less per game. So I consider it best part of my game. Lately I've been messing with my grip and the more I do more I realize that I like my neutral grip. The one thing I noticed about my swing is that my ass is coming in. I'm losing my posture on the follow through. Coming out of my torso tilt. Notice how my right shoulder is as high as left shoulder on finish. That is of concern. Ive read this means power loss. I've got new deal I do on beginning of back swing where i come back in one piece with shoulder turn into catcher mitt getting toe of club up push into catchers mitt then arms up. It feels like it sets me up for powerful release and dead straight iron shots. I saw this routine watching LPGA golf can't remember which player. So basically I feel score is reflection of proper technique and want the swing to be analyzed at least once a year. Thanks all.

I'm unable to do hogans power move at this point. I'm pretty sure. My left but cheek does not connect with the wall. I'm bummed. How hard will it be to relearn with this technique in mind?

Yeah looks a little laid off but to me the issue is why you get laid off.  Club gets inside the hands because of how the arms work and then the arms lift.  Got a good drill for ya

Thanks MVMAC for taking a look at my swing. I'll get started right away with a  few swings in my living room. And  see if I can see/feel the difference with the drill you have handed me. and a understanding of the issue.

thanks again.

Another observation I think I can see with my swing is that I might not have the proper pivot. no hip slide to left but cheek. been reading about hogan and right butt left butt hitting the wall. well when i do it my left butt cheek comes of the wall. hence not keeping pivot tight, drifting in. But how will will i ever correct this flaw? what drill is out there for this?  It seems serious. or should I be worried?

That I bet will "Well, that's a whole nother can of worms" im sure.

Yes agree with the butt on the wall stuff.  I'm trying to help the stuff that comes before that, the reasons you need to come off the wall.  Understand you can have a perfect back swing and still come off the wall, but the better the backswing gets, the "off the wall" will lessen imo.  Also imo the butt off the wall isn't a make or break for playing good golf, can easily shoot in the 70's, hit a bunch of greens and have that fault.  If you work too much on it without understanding HOW Hogan kept the butt on the wall, the hips won't come out of flexion into the followthrough and you'll hit a lot of low cuts.  Best way to work on it is the make slow practice swings, SLOW, with your forehead against a wall at home.

There's one more piece for you for the back swing, keeping the elbows closer together and not letting them pull apart.  This is a great drill to exaggerate the feel.  But for the next while, just focus on the upper left arm/tee in the arm pit.

Well the first drill you gave is me great. I worked/ rehearsed back swing for awhile. Very slow swings here in the den and the feel of my back swing is very different. I'll need to get a video up with my practice swings for you. And I'll be doing some more with elbows tight. Thanks much

Good Morning

I woke up with a sore lower back and left side. I do not think it is a bad sore. Using different muscles sore. I noticed that the new back swing puts me in a new stretch in my finish. left side muscles are being stretched on finish from trying to keep posture through out.  More T under arm drills today and submit some vids of it..

Well folks,

I realize this is a major swing change and will take some time and effort to correct.

1. Work on not rolling left arm with drills.

This is very hard to overcome at this point. It always seems to be creeping back in my swings.

The drill I'll be trying is practice swings with hands separated on the club. until arms don't roll.

2. very slow practice swings. From what I understand rehearsing these in very slow-mo, like 1min to up to 3min to make entire swing for muscle memory.

3. Pray that I'll learn this technique before spring/summers tournaments.

I like the way you're thinking, great work.  If it starts to feel "normal" understand you're not doing it enough.  Should feel different at first, like the first few weeks to a month.

    • Hitting some good shots on my golf trip. It's good I can tell when I hit better shots the way I want to swing the ball versus when I use an older swing. Shockingly, the short game has been at worst, not harmful to my game. I am using similar feels to the full swing, in that I try to get my hands down. I've been nipping the ball clean off the turf.
    • I was laid off two months ago. Good severance, a 90 day layoff announcement regulation the company wanted to avoid so technically I'm still on the payroll for a few weeks, and a bunch of banked PTO, so I'm in a great spot and working on a startup idea I've been batting around with my brother for a while. That means I've got time to get to the gym! I'm at like 60-75 minutes 5x a week of strength training, and either a run or a bunch of time playing soccer or tennis with my daughter on the weekends. Stronger than I've been in forever. Up ~5 pounds of (noticeable!) muscle!
    • Do you have examples of exceptional scores versus their established handicap indexes?
